Leading-Edge Cluster Cool Silicon

The Leading-Edge Cluster Cool Silicon

Innovations in micro- and nanotechnology form the basis of modern information and communications technology (ICT). They are the driving force behind the economic success of leading industrialized nations as well as former emerging markets. Due to strategic regional development planning Silicon Saxony has, within only a few years advanced to becoming Europes leading site for microelectronics. Silicon Saxony" is the only cluster in all of Europe with the ability to keep up with its Asian competitors. The Dresden microelectronics and ICT sector currently employs 43,000 people and the Dresden-Chemnitz-Freiberg region has become a unique cluster of enterprises with specialized know-how in the micro- and nanotechnology, telecommunications technology, sensor networks technology sectors as well as the photovoltaic industry. Silicon Saxony is also home of the cutting-edge themes of the future, like organic electronics and the next generation of mobile networks. For almost two years the 64 institutions and enterprises comprising the Leading-Edge Cluster Cool Silicon have jointly researched one of the most pressing challenges in the micro- and nanotechnology sector: How to dramatically optimize energy efficiency across the entirety of ICTs value added chain? The reason: the rapidly increasing use of ICT systems has reached the CO2 emission levels of all combined civil air traffic and the energy costs for operating ICT infrastructures have become a significant financial concern. This is why the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) supports the Cool Silicon Leading-Edge Cluster competition with more than 40 Million Euros.

The Leading-Edge Cluster Cool Silicon is divided into three thematic scientific research areas that interconnect through their technology and value added chains, and currently encompass 193 technical projects. Research Area 1 is focused on basic technology for energy efficient ICT-products and their application in computers. Within Area 2, called Communication Systems, experts are working on optimizing the modern mobile communications systems software and hardware as well as all necessary system components. Area 3 is dedicated to the development of energy autarkic, wireless sensor networks systems. Central projects accompanying the technical projects focus on education and public relations to broadly inform the public about the clusters goals as well as the founding of new companies. For instance, a multimedia exhibition and new courses of studies at participating universities are planned as part of these projects. Through a planned art project, the cluster is probing new ways of communication: The artistic interpretations of the clusters goals aim to familiarize layaudiences with Cool Silicons high technology. Silicon Saxony Management GmbH is the administrator of the cluster organization and evaluates the Leading-Edge Clusters work in conjunction with its project coordinator, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The initial formation of the Leading-Edge Cluster has developed into a cooperative network in which a large number of Saxonys participating ICT businesses have been able to unite their research and innovation under a central umbrella organization. The project partners combine excellence in scientific research, close-to-market development and world leading specialized know-how of fabrication processes. Through increased cooperation they collaborate on key innovations and new system approaches for a more energy efficient ICT sector. These key technologies and the establishment of new hidden champions have given the innovative location its broad economic foundation. Cool Silicon is securing the importance of Silicon Saxony as Europes No. 1 site for micro- and nanotechnology and greatly contributes to the increasing national and international attention paid to the Dresden region.
