Introduction: The leather garments industry in India originated in the early seventies when the international market for these garments experienced a tremendous upsurge in demand. During the early days of the inception its growth is limited as well as sporadic, but in the last decade it has picked up and showed remarkable progress. The Indian leather garments are by and large manufactured, from sheep (lamb) leather and the products coming out of Indian factories are of excellent quality and mode. The manufacture of leather garments is guided by foreign styles and designs, because most of these garments are exported to the western countries where the winter lasts long and severe. Uses & Applications: Fashionable leather garments are becoming more and more popular these days. Long coats are generally used in the winter in the plains, while at the hills they are almost used throughout the year. In the cold parts of Europe and America these coats are used throughout the year. Now-a-days jackets and blazers are gaining popularity among Indian youth also. Market Survey: There is tremendous scope for developing countries to capture an increasing portion of the World market for leather garments. This is due to the two reasons. The first one is in the developed countries, they have confined themselves to the production of high quality and high priced garments due to mounting labour costs there. The second reason is the developing countries itself have changed themselves from traditional suppliers of hides and skins to manufacturers and exporters of finished leather products. India with its largest cattle population in the World and cheap man power can become a leading exporter in the World. Raw Materials: Leather, Thread, Adhesive, Zips, Buttons, Fittings etc. Plant & Machinery 1. Single needle lock stitch flat bed sewing 0.33 HP motor machine 2. High speed single needle flat bed lock 0.33 HP motor stitch Industrial sewing machine 3. Flat bed single needle sewing machine 0.5 HP motor 4. Heavy duty cylinder bed sewing machine 0.5 HP motor 5. Button stitch sewing machine 0.5 HP motor 6. Button hole making machine 0.5 HP motor 7. Skiving machine 0.33 HP motor 8. Lining machine 9. Miscellaneous like scissors, measuring tapes etc. Manufacturing Process: As in the case of any other garment manufacturing, designing is the most important operation in the manufacture of leather garments. So any leather garment manufacturer must be aware of latest trends in the market and design according to the requirements and wishes of people. Pattern procurement is the starting point of manufacturing process. Patterns are made either within the units or general patterns are purchased and then modified according to the size, shape, demand of the garments etc. For a leather with grain running along length wise, the pattern pieces should be placed of the hide so that they run with the grains. This issues a proper shape to the eventual garment. The pattern should always be placed on the flesh side of the hide. This minimizes the damage to the exposed surface. Patterns can be attached to the many different ways using marking tapes, paper clips etc. as the pattern attached to the hide, it can be traced with a chalk or pencil for additional placement insurance. But throughout process the leather must be protected from pinholes and : scraps . Leather pattern pieces are not cut on the fold. Lining is another important aspect of leather garment making. Leather, against bars skin or others, has a tendency to cling. So lining is necessary for garments like jackets, trousers and coats. Lining fabrics recommended for leather should be colar fast, such as satin, taffeta arid rayon twill. The number of seams on the garment can be increased in order to decrease the wastage of leather. Leather can also be combined with other garment materials such as wool. Vests Basically there are only 3 pieces in most vests, two from panels and one from back. For pull over vests there are only two pieces most men's vests need darts but women vests receive darts, atleast one on each side, to allow for the best time. Caps: The caps can be made from four pieces of leather seemed down the front center, the back centre and along the shoulders. A cap is one of the most successful garment for allowing leather to show itself off in a natural drope.
