I shall first give an overview of the current nanotechnology development in Taiwan, particularly focuses on our commercialization efforts.
We have observed an interesting and encouraging growth in nanotechnology applications in the medium and small size more traditional
industry. This development has an important impact on the society as many products are closely related to peoples daily life.
At the second part of my talk, I shall present our recent scientific works on the synthesis of superconducting FeSe nanoparticles and nanowires. The tetragonal phase b-FeSe, which is a member of the newly discovered Fe-based superconductors, has provided a unique platform
for the detailed investigation of the correlation between the physical properties and crystal structure due to its simplest crystal structure.
This has made FeSe the most attractive system to better understand the possible origin of superconductivity in the new iron-based superconductors. We have carried out a series of properties characterizations by measuring resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, Raman, NMR
and femtosecond spectroscopy on b-FeSe single crystals grown by flux-melt or high-pressure synthesis. Our results show clearly the presence of anomalies in all the characterized properties at the temperature where a structural distortion from tetragonal to orthorhombic (or
monoclinic) appears for all superconducting samples, but not in the non-superconducting ones. This structural distortion was observed not
accompanied by a magnetic ordering as commonly occurs in the parent compounds of FeAs-based superconductors. All the observations
suggest that the low temperature structural distortion is essential for the occurrence of superconductivity in b-FeSe.
We further found a possibility to realize at ambient pressure the high-temperature superconducting phase with Tc ~ 40K in -FeSe, which
has been demonstrated by the application of high pressure. We used a rapid, solvent-less Reaction under Autogenic Pressure at Elevated Temperature (RAPET) process to synthesize superconducting Fe-Se nanoparticles. Detailed magnetization measurements on these
nanoparticles show that in addition to the superconducting transition at ~10K, there exists an anomaly in magnetic susceptibility suggesting
the presence of superconducting transition at ~40K in the synthesized nanoparticles. The superconducting volume fraction depends on the
chemical composition of the starting materials and also on the processing time.
