A Lockheed aircraft made its first
flight in 1913. Since that time, many famous Lockheed aircraft and flights have been made by numerous customers. The aircraft company had an austere beginning at Burbank, California. In he early 1930's, the twin e ngirted Lockheed Electra became a very successful airline aircraft. Liter, the Lodestar and Hudson were introduced to international airlines and to British Air Forces respedively. Customer service has always been a halimark of Lockheed Aircraft Corporation and it started with the test and production of fts first aircraft, Jr grew from just a handful of men providing flight line maintenance into Lockheed Aircraft Service Company (LAS), It's the oldest division in the corporation and the oldest aircraft maintenance, overhaul and modification company in the United States. The LAS designation was established in 193g from the customer service branch of Lockheed in Burbank. It immediately began one of its largest BIG SAFARI

service jobs; reassembly and maintenance of the Lockheed Hudson bombers shipped to the British Isles. LAS had nearly 6,000 people employed in Great Britain during World War Ii and supported more than 20,000 aircraft. In 1952, LAS began its operational Ontario International Airport and in 1956 moved its mpany headquarters there. In January 1964, LAS became the fourth major aircraft modification and depot maintenance contractor in the BIG SAFARI Program with the establishment of Detachment 4, LOO (Liaison Office Ontario). AFLC assigned Captain Leo Talbot to act as a one-man operation in Ontario as an additional duty to his regular job as the Liaison Officer at Ryan in San Diego. He continued on a temporary duty basis until his transfer to the Pentagon in June 1965. The first project ! DUCK HOOK, initiated in February 1964, invoked the modification of six C-123B aircraft for

special mission support operations in South East Asia The AFLC office grew in size and number of officers and airmen as additional new projects were directed to LAS. The complexity of the modifications and types of technology also grew in the 1970'5 and 19Effs. A major transfer of special projects aircraft to LAS occurred in 1973 when Detachment I (LOG) at General Dynamics was inactivated. Since then, SOMC SEA anorak have been deleted from the Detachment 4 inventory and many new special warfare aircraft projects have been added. The most dramatic change to the LAS organization came with the assignment of COMPASS CALL. in 19h(1. This one project propelled LAS into computers and software like no other aircraft modification. The job was successfully completed in twenty-four months at a cost much less than projected by the Research & Development community. The following officers have corn mantled the AFLC organization at LAS.

This project Walled in February 1964 and the sixth aircraft delivered in June 1964. The project required the installation of special receivers. ECM transmitters, a Doppler Navigation System and a special color camouflage paint scheme. From April 1968 until May 1970, the DUCK HOOK aircraft were supported by the customer and another contractor. From May 1970 until May 1971, the six aircraft were supported by Detachment 4 and LAS.
