Halo 4 was release just a week ago and is on track to reach $300 million in global sales in the first week, making it the biggest Halo launch in history and the biggest entertainment launch of the year to date. In the first 24 hours of its release, Halo 4 garnered more than $220 million worldwide, eclipsing the record for the biggest day-one opening in U.S. box office history, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and the biggest movie of 2012, The Avengers based on U.S. sales alone. The launch of Halo 4 propelled lifetime sales for the Halo franchise beyond $3.38 billion, cementing its status as one of the most popular entertainment franchises in the world.

When I first heard about these guys, I remember thinking they would be some kind of alternative folk artist with Middle Eastern influences. Turns out with a whole lot of synth and guitar they are one of the more dynamic artists, who are a little bit of rock n roll with a real attitude.

A long way from the shaking ground of Lyttelton, Lindon Puffin is heading out from the harbour side for a summer tour. Joined by fellow hometowners The Eastern, Delaney Davidson and The Unfaithful Ways, Puffin is on the road and ready to roll (in the music sense). Enjoy a blend of folk, country and rock.

Since their debut EP in July 2008, The Outsiders have grown dramatically. Following a belief that location will not hold them back, the band has toured the US, Europe, UK, Australia and New Zealand. SAN FRAN BATH HOUSE
8pM, $45, UNDERTHERADAR.CO.NZ

Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group (featuring members of The Mars Volta, At The Drive In, and Le Butcherettes) brings the world-renowned artists to our shores. Coming to prominence in the early 1990s, Omar made his mark as a guitarist in the ground break posthardcore band At The Drive In, before playing with The Mars Volta in the 2000s.

The problem with trying to listen to something that calls itself post-industrial experimental electronica is that youre probably not going to like it immediately. But stick with it and How to Destroy Angels tends to bend your expectations, and your mind, into some pleasant shapes. Trent Reznors side project is a joint effort with long-time collaborators Rob Sheriden and Atticus Ross as well as Reznors vocalist wife Mariqueen Maandig. An Omen is the bands follow-up EP to their selftitled 2010 offering (available for free on Soundcloud). The first track, Keep it Together, is perhaps a bad choice to start off with, not doing the five other tracks justice at all. At first listen I rolled my eyes and walked away, claiming to anyone whod listen that it was a terrible rip off Portishead and Thom Yorke all over again. But, having returned to listen again, I found, just where Id left it, a deeply thoughtful EP. Maandigs voice is a whispery mystery, and with Reznor kicking in with his soft gravel here and there, How to Destroy Angels, have a way of turning simple sounds into a haunted aural spaces. The sound is hard to pin down, and its clear that this is a band that knows how to incant the ghosts of many genres into their own. Youll hear the dark bluegrass sound of Ice Age move into the video game quest of On the Wing. The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters sounds like it is actually producing monsters as you listen. Trent Reznors influence is

overwhelming in the sound. That particular NIN mood is invoked in every song, and in listening its very hard to escape from it. This crossover is not for a lack of trying on the part of the band, who are very careful to not cross the streams in terms of their album artwork and overall visual aspect. This is the sort of thing that grows on you, and will have you checking out the multiple other projects of the stupidly talented people in this band. All, this is an EP thats glitchy and wonderful, and its true power lies in its silences. And this is all a mere taste of whats to come (a fulllength album is in the works, due for release in 2013).

ANDY WARHOL
ARTS CHANNEL, 8.30PM

Its hard to imagine that todays fashion editors would send their teams overseas with the vague directive think of Cleopatra. But Diana Vreeland, the revolutionary editor who led Vogue and Harpers Bazaar through some of historys most exciting fashion eras and who later became the curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume Institute was no ordinary editor. Famous not just for her brilliant eye but for her enormous, eccentric personality, shes an inspiring and intriguing documentary subject, even after death. This doco was filmed by her granddaughter-in-law Lisa Immordino Vreeland, so unsurprisingly its a mostly glowing, celebratory look at the style icon, with tributes from the likes of Anjelica Huston and glimpses of her intimidating side from Ali MacGraw, who once worked with her as an assistant. Immordino draws predominantly on interviews for Vreelands written memoirs by journalist George Plimpton, although the voiceovers provided by an actress are a strange touch. Then again, Vreeland was just as grandiose and kooky as the narrative intones.

Anna Wintour may have become the worlds most famous fashion editor, but her flat and unreadable persona is the antithesis to Vreelands wild, fanciful, theatrical character. Although much of the archival footage of Vreeland in her later years is grainy, her eccentric dress sense and tendency to talk in outrageous soundbites bring it to life. What makes this film such a joy to watch is not just the timeline of fashion highlights, but Vreelands unique perspective on life. She knew she was no beauty and yet she made the most not of just her own flaws, but by accentuating others, such as Barbra Streisands Nefertiti nose and Penelope Trees woodland-creature eyes. Little is made of Vreelands personal life a world she tended to neglect for her career. However, there is a telling interview with her two sons in which its apparent that her life was first and foremost, about her work.

LEIGH SAWMILL CAF

142 PAkiri rd, leiGh

Kiwi band Nightchoir once said Sawmill Caf was their favourite place to play and we can see why! With an enviable location in the Hauraki Gulf, this quaint little place feels like a home away from home. With excellent local wines and produce, to provide meals which offer a healthy and balanced cuisine.

GALBRAITHS ALEHOUSE
2 mt eden roAd

Do you know what goes well with a hearty southern steak? A Speights, of course! Its famous for hearty servings of pub food as it should be, with beer and cider to match. Whether you are after fish and chips in a delicious beer batter or a solid slab of red meat.

Located in the former Grafton Library, these guys are the award-winning brewers of fine cask-conditioned European inspired lagers and gourmet pub food. Their goal is to introduce old world beer flavours back into our craft beer scene after decades without them. The range includes the Bitter and Twisted bitter, Grafton Porter and Antipodean pale ale. They use very hands-on techniques which can be watched from two vantage points within the building. They also get in special guests, so to speak, with other fine craft beers in tap on a seasonal basis.

Bringing The Super BaSS

WiTH THE uNiQuE FEMALE RAPPER HEADED TO OuR SHORES, GROOVE GUIDE TAKES A LOOK BACK ON HER RiSE TO FAME.

Big pink hair, Barbie doll eyes crossed with harajuku-inspired style, and a whole lot of ghetto booty when nicki Minaj exploded onto our screens and airwaves with her debut hit Super Bass, it was difficult to know what to make of her. Born in Saint James, a town located in the republic of Trinidad and Tobago, nicki initially drew comparisons to r&B singer rihanna (who she would go on to perform with), Lil kim (who shed later get into a feud with) and even pop stars Britney Spears and Christina aguilera. But as she proved and continues to prove the rapper is indefinable. and thats what has potentially made her one of the most successful female performers. her worldwide album sales of her debut Pink Friday achieved her platinum status just a month after release and has seen her performing with the likes of alicia keys, David guetta, Justin Bieber and Madonna to name a few. But the rise to fame has been anything but an overnight success or an easy road. nicki struggled with a tough family life, relocating to Queens, new York at just five years old with her mother to escape the hands of her father. [My father] drank a lot and did drugs, and he would get violent when he did, she said in an interview. When he set fire to the house, he was attempting to kill my mother. She got out before it burned all the way down. ive always had this female-empowerment thing in the back of my mind because i wanted my mother to be stronger and she couldnt be. i thought, if im successful, i can change her life. initially pursuing an acting career, nicki worked administration and customer service work to make ends meet, but she was often dismissed from her job for a bad attitude. That whole time was so horrible, nicki was reported saying in an interview with pop Crush. it was like fucking torture. at the end of the day, after working at whatever job i hated, i would get all dressed up and go out with the hope of getting a record deal. at night, i was an artist, but during the day i was a slave. She released two mixtapes, Playtime Is Over in 2007 and Suka Free in 2008 to no commercial success, but it certainly got her some attention, winning the Female artist of the Year award at the 2008 Underground

Music awards. it wasnt until Super Bass in 2011 the fifth single off Pink Friday which made nicki a household name. hit after hit continued to be released from the debut, including, Fly which saw her teaming up with rihanna, girls Fall Like Dominos, Moment 4 Life, and Check it Out with Will.i.am. never content, nicki took the sudden rise to fame and ran with it, saying ive already given my fans so much, but the expectation is to go higher and higher. and when ive done that, im expected to go a little bit higher. ive always wanted fame. But when i achieved fame, i started realising that it wasnt as important as being great at what you do or being critically acclaimed. nickis sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded released in april this year is home to the multi-platinum mega-smash Starship and the equally infectious club-banger pound The alarm. Off stage, nicki is as wild as her on-stage persona. never one to keep her mouth shut, shes playful about her financial success saying, i could definitely buy a car off one of my guest appearances. and im not talking about a hyundai on how much she charges for a cameo appearance on an artists songs. Shes not one to hold back either, attracting controversy and a supposed war of the rappers with Lil kim over stealing her style. Every time you in the news, its cause you gettin at somebody! Wheres your music? put your music out, and when i see your name on Billboard, thats when ill respond to you. Other than that, goodbye. its Barbie, bitch, she said in an interview with US radio station hot 97 in response to Lil kims claims. Labeled as one of the most influential female rapper of all time, nicki certainly has a leg to stand on when it comes to speaking her mind, and no doubt we will get to hear more of her mind whatever is going on behind that elaborately coiffed hair this weekend.

S On The WhaT
BOx in 2013?
TV LOVERS, CAST YOuR EYE OVER THE LASTEST LiNE-uP. in ThE WakE of The X Factor NZ announcement and MediaWorks planning their big 2013, TVnZ has released an extensive list of new (and returning) programmes in current affairs, dramas, comedies and more. as well as some highly-anticipated shows from the States and Uk, local content is also getting a big boost. Firstly, current affairs. as we already know, petra Bagust is on the way out, as is ol Mark walrus Sainsbury. Breakfast is said to be getting a refreshed line-up of presenters (does that mean rawdon Christie is also leaving?) and Sunday, Fair Go and 20/20 will be back for more in-depth analysis of current events. TV One is getting a healthy dose of Entourages Jeremy piven in the new 10-part period drama Mr Selfridge, which chronicling the story of american entrepreneur, harry gordon Selfridge, the flamboyant founder of Selfridges department store. now American Horror Story has wrapped up on our screens, leading lady Connie Britton is back in nashville, the story of a fading country music superstar is forced to team up with a teen sensation (hayden panettiere) or face the loss of her tour and promotion of her latest records. Viewers will also welcome the return of Call The Midwife, Mrs Browns Boys, Person Of Interest and Miranda. On a more serious note, documentary lovers can get their fill with natures voice Sir David attenborough as he continues his extraordinary exploration of the globe, narrating the spectacular new series, Africa. and to round out their hot hits, golden globe-winner kevin Bacon stars in Ones terrifying new thriller The Following. The new series follows an FBi agent who finds himself in the middle of a network of serial killers, when a diabolical serial killer uses special technology to create them. Over on TV2, superheros are still the name of the game with Arrow. reinventing the DC comics and the character The green arrow, a vigilante out to right the wrongs of his family. Desire is a common theme in the chilling new drama 666 Park Avenue and Mistresses, focusing on a group of four girlfriends that could give the Sex and the City gals a run for their money with sex talk. and the usual suspects Revenge, Once Upon A Time, My Kitchen Rules and Greys Anatomy are back in the primetime spot to fulfill your need for drama and emotional soap situations. There is also a whole lot of homegrown entertainment, with a few familiar faces and titles, not to mention a few new ones too. new to One, comedy/drama Agent Anna stars robyn Malcolm as embattled solo mum down on her luck and turning to the world of real estate to reverse her fortunes. TV2 is bringing go girls back for a fifth season, and of course it goes without saying there are all-new episodes of Shortland Street, now in its 21st year and still the number one show in the 7pm weeknight timeslot. reality shows are as popular as ever with MasterChef New Zealand and New Zealands Got Talent once again be looking for the best of the best in food and entertainment. Showtime is a warts-and-all look at the world of suburban theatre groups; Meet The Frockers combines the humour and hysterics of a brides search for the perfect wedding dress; Women In Blue follows the lives of seven female police officers working on the streets and from the makers of South and Intrepid Journeys comes Beyond the Bombays, a series which celebrates the beauty of the new Zealand landscape and the characters who dwell in it. Finally, over on TV2, Mitre Ten Dream Home is taking a turn for the emotional, setting up a home in Christchurch, rebuilding the hopes and dreams of local families. While TVnZ is announcing new and returning shows, producers have also announced a development in the technology field this side of Christmas TVnZ will launch a video on demand app for Samsung Smart TVs, and from February next year will expand online content to gaming consoles, ipods, ipads, iphones and other mobile devices. Call of Duty: Black Ops IIs campaign is a direct sequel to the story featured in the first Black Ops. It features many of the same characters and even retreads some of the same ground, while also telling a brand new story. The new tale jumps between the 70s, 80s, and the year 2025, as a way of explaining the motivations of the various characters in the game. Considered as a whole, the story is disjointed and poorly paced, however there are elements of it that are enjoyable. Some of the aspects of the campaign in are very worthwhile, not least of which is the surprising inclusion of branching storylines a first for Call of Duty. Throughout the game, youll be confronted with a number of key moments that affect the outcome, right through to multiple different endings. Another first, although a perhaps slightly less successful one, is the inclusion of a new type of gameplay Strike Force missions. In these, you can direct multiple teams of Strike Force units from a top-down perspective, using strategy to overcome various objectives. Theyre a fun change of pace, but poor AI and easily-killed troops mean that you have to take direct control in order to succeed. Developers Treyarch have spiced up the multiplayer in numerous ways, making a number of key changes to the formula. New maps, new weapons and new rewards are just the beginning, as Treyarch demonstrate their willingness to tinker in a meaningful way with the underlying structure of the game. Theres a host of support for advanced online competition, too, and the supporting Call of Duty: Elite online service is free for all this time around. Should you buy it? Chances are youve already made that decision. If you havent, and if you were considering skipping a year, faults aside its an easy game to recommend. That Treyarch and Activision arent just resting on their laurels, and are happy to inject new ideas into the experience, is something that should be rewarded by your interest. Interactivity in the way the campaign flows, in particular, is rewarding and fresh, and is something I hope we see more of. Recommended, no matter what kind of Call of Duty experience youre looking for.

A ONEOFF REuNiON SHOW TuRNED iNTO AN EXTENDED TOuR FOR THE AuCKLAND ROCK BAND. in 2006, aUCkLanDS Bleeders won two new Zealand Music awards Best Breakthrough artist and Best rock album. Their debut year saw them release A Bleeding Heart Ep that quickly became considered a hardcore punk classic. This was followed by a record deal in 2004 and then, in 2006, they released their debut album, Sweet As Sin, which made it to number two in the charts. Their local success (constantly sold out shows all across new Zealand, which led to the greatest reward of all: a record deal with Universal Music) saw them move onto the greater things. These greater things were a broadening of their horizons, which included touring alongside greats such as alexisonfire, avenged Sevenfold, australian band gyroscope and even a bout in the Uk where they supported the Misfits. it wasnt all roses however, and after the band moved to Canada they split up towards the end of 2009. Frontman angelo Munro says, When we moved to Canada we didnt know we were going to break up. When we did we thought thats it. They even employed Ted Jensen from Sterling Sound in new York to mix the album, after having Clint Murphy behind the helm for production and recording of Sweet As Sin in at aucklands York Street Studios. This turned out to be a show that the band werent going to follow a formula and instead, the supercharged album possessed the brutal vitality that existed on their first Ep A Bleeding Heart. all in all, the journey lasted six years. and after three years apart, which saw the members play in other bands such as Canadas Black Lungs, and new Zealands very own Cobra khan and Leeches, Bleeders are back for a reunion tour that will feature a set of the punk rock legends finest songs. The first show on the tour is new plymouths art & Tattoo Festival, the organiser is friend of Munros and the reunion was, in part, his idea. as the story goes he said to Munro, if you play a reunion show, it should be here. The band were all interested and from their Munro and the band decided to turn it into a tour with shows now in Wellington and auckland. Since the bands break up, Munro says they came back to new Zealand in drips and drabs and that their drummer is currently living in Melbourne, which means there may not be another album on the horizon, i dont see it happening[but] its not off the cards, this [tour] could spark something. The time apart hasnt weakened the band and Munro says they have a lot of songs to start playing again in a short time and that each member of the band has improved over the years. Weve all got better, im a better vocalist. When were together we were playing all the time and so we were tight. its a tour thats been billed as giving new Zealand fans the goodbye they deserve. What are you working on right now? at the moment im not really working on anything. im writings songs all the time anyways, so i really dont worry too much about coming up with new material. it always just kind of happens. Just got a band together, so i guess im working on preparing for live shows, which is really exciting. Who was an inspiration or idol to you growing up? growing up my dad has always been my idol and my biggest inspiration. i have always wanted to be like him and do all the things that he did thats actually why i started playing guitar, because he did. When you were a kid, what was your dream job? ive always thought it would be really cool to be a professional Scuba diver and just dive heaps of different places. hopefully one day i will end up getting to do that! Whats your favourite venue in the country? at this point, i actually havent really played at too many venues, im still pretty new to the music world, but i think a venue i would really love to play at would be Mangawhai Tavern, great place. Where was the last place you went out for dinner? Literally just went to Stingray Mats, which is a fish & chip shop in Mangawhai heads. Wheres the best place to get Eggs Benedict? at home! Dad does a great job. What has been the best show youve attended this year? Definitely roger Waters The Wall. Is tall poppy syndrome a thing? i think it is something that does occur quite a bit in new Zealand, but my family and friends are all pretty hippie, so i think they prefer being positive rather than negative, which works well for me. Whats your guilty pleasure? i not only know the jump jam moves to keep On Movin by Five, but enjoy performing them at parties.

The biggest success youve had is i think having my first single certified as gold was pretty awesome, but im also just stoked to have recorded an album at 19. Is tall poppy syndrome a thing? i think it is something that does occur quite a bit in new Zealand, but my family and friends are all pretty hippie, so i think they prefer being positive rather than negative, which works well for me. What do you most respect about your friends? Theyre all very secure about who they are, which i think is awesome and a really great way to be. They wont change for anyone and i think ive learnt a lot from them in that respect. im definitely glad to have people like that in my life. A usual Saturday night for you is i try to be at the beach in the weekends, so usual Saturday nights are actually spent with the family or with mates making bonfires at the beach and fun stuff like that. A usual Wednesday night for you is Most likely homework. Uni life! One piece of advice youve never forgotten respect only the opinions of those you respect. The biggest mistake youve made is getting my drivers license. Shouldve never have done it, im a terrible driver. New Zealand audiences are pretty supportive id have to say. So far ive had some really great audiences. not the loudest of people, but very keen to encourage kiwi music. Name five things surrounding you right now. Surfboard, couch, bean bag, Mums old classical guitar and my wetsuit.
