Fashion Forward: The Fads, Trends and Influence of Fashion The clothes we wear, from the type of fabric, to the designer, to the color, reflect the fads or trends that are popular in our culture. Every aspect of the designer pair of jeans in last weeks issue of Vogue or Fashion Magazine. Who the jeans appeal to, the market they are going to be sold on, how to actually market the brand and many other factors contribute to how consumers spend their money on clothes. Since the creation of newspapers, television, internet and radio, the hype on popular culture fads have been able to reach millions more than it would have if these things had not been created. Fashion has long been a part of culture throughout the world especially in parts of Europe and the United States. Since the beginning of civilization, humans have designed and molded an image they hoped to achieve, and have managed to implement it into mainstream culture. Taking a look back at fashion in the past will show how our ancestors built the foundation for this popular aspect of pop culture. Dating as far back as the sixteenth century during the reign of King Henry VII, apparel during this time period reflected that of the royalty. The King favored a modest luxurious style while at the same time aiming for comfort. King Henry VIIIs style was more detailed because his clothes were usually decorated with jewels or embroidery. Velvet, fur, cloth of gold and silver, gold-embroidered shirts and an honest amount of jewels were favored by the King. Head pieces, worn by any gender, were also a fashion fad so to say. Comment [M2]: This sentence appears to be incomplete, and Im not really sure what its referring to

Comment [M3]: Awkward structure, reword into possibly two separate sentences, i.e. Dating as far back as the sixteenth century during the reign of King Henry VII, fashion choice reflected pop culture. During this time period, apparel reflected that of royalty.

during this time period was the peascod-fronted doublet, a form fitting jacket that was worn to show off a slim waist. High collars, and large puffy like sleeves were worn during this time by both men and women. Knee-length britches began to make its appearance more and more during the seventeenth century. Large corsets, big hair styles, and embroidered lace became very popular amongst royalty. Men would wear embroidered lace around their collars, and around their sleeves. In some instances women would wear a somewhat low neckline gown and border the bust line with lace. A number of emerging fashion trends emerged from the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries. Low neckline petticoats, long curled wigs, worn by men, head pieces for women, worn in many different ways, and metal lace. During the eighteenth and nineteenth century tight fitting jackets was replaced with the waist coat commonly worn by men. Bright colored fabrics also made an appearance during these two time periods. Knee britches and waist coats were the fashion of everyday men and young boys. Women wore dresses and gowns made of silk fabric and began to wear rather large head pieces. Satin petticoats were worn largely by women and men during this time.
Comment [M7]: Run-on sentence Comment [M4]: Awkward word choice, emerge is used twice in one sentence Comment [M5]: Sentence structure is hard to follow, a more transitional phrase would be beneficial

Comment [M6]: Structure/word choice- i.e. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, tight fitting jackets worn by men were replaced by waist coats.

Writers Questions answered: 1. Should I focus on the history within the century or should i continue to examine it from
previous centuries? - I think you are off to a great start, in my opinion you should continue to examine it from previous centuries such as choosing maybe one or two more time periods to focus on and compare fashion trends from those times to ones today. 2. How can I make describing the history a little less like listing?

- instead of throwing a bunch of random facts together in sentence form, use transitional phrases that allow for one fact to flow into another

3. Do you understand what I've written so far and where I'm trying to go?

-I understand where youre trying to go with your ideas, but the sentence structuring makes understanding everything a little difficult. Instead of using so many commas, try breaking the sentences up with conjunction and transitional words and phrases, this will improve the structure and allow for the paper to have a better flow as well. overall, the ideas are great but the structure is a little difficult to follow.
