Third Generation Wireless Systems. Third generation wireless refers to near-future developments, especially in (but not limited to) mobile communications. The third generation of wireless systems has been designed to deliver high data rates for multimedia applications and increased capacity to accommodate the high rate of growth in the wireless personal communications market. Both voice services and data services are offered. The technologies in the 3G family include Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and cdma2000. While both have common roots in the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) radio interface, UMTS stems from Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), while cdma2000 is the next generation of cdmaOne (IS-95). 3GPP Third Generation Partnership Project. 3GPP is a partnership comprised of Organizational Partners (standards organizations) and Market Representation Partners (wireless operators, vendors, service organizations) that have agreed to co-operate in the production of globally applicable Technical Specifications and Technical Reports for a 3rd Generation Mobile System based on evolved GSM core networks and radio access technologies (i.e., UMTS).

meet the requirements set forth by IMT-2000. IMT-2000 is expected to offer improved transmission speeds (up to 2Mbps) through advanced technologies, not a total revolution from the existing second-generations digital cellular phones. Therefore, other countries are preparing for services like cdma2000 and GPRS, so-called pre IMT-2000, with which 144kbps transmission becomes possible.

MGCF Media Gateway Control Function. In IP Telephony networks, the logical function that performs gateway control (resource allocation, signaling with the outside world) within a distributed gateway system.

NAT Network Address Translation. NAT is a mechanism to conserve IP address space. NAT defines certain address ranges as private IP address ranges. For example, 192.168.0.0 192.168.255.255 and 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 are private address ranges. They are to be used only within private IP networks (LANs). The same address can be used by multiple private IP networks. An IP packet with a private addresss cannot be routed within the public Internet. A Gateway between a private IP network and the public Internet is responsible for converting private IP addresses into public IP addresses.

PAP Password Authentication Protocol. PAP is one of the authentication protocol used during PPP connection setup. The other being Challenge Authentication Protocol (CHAP). The PAP is a simple protocol compared to CHAP. The user sends the login name and password to the server. The server validates the information sent by the user. The PAP is the most popular protocol used for authentication during dial-up access to the ISPs. It is also used for data services in cdma2000.

PBX Private Branch Exchange. A PBX is a telephone switch used to serve an enterprise environment like a business, university, hotel, hospital, etc. Typically, the PBX is located on the enterprise site and administered by enterprise personnel, and is connected to a local Central Office via telephone trunks. An alternative to having a PBX is subscribing to Centrex service from the local telephone company, which provides similar functionality (extension dialing, calling services, etc.) like a PBX. In a Centrex environment, the enterprise personnel are not responsible for provisioning or maintaining the switch.

PS-CN Packet Switched-Core Network. The PS-CN is the core network in GSM and UMTS systems which provides access from the radio access network (RAN) to the packet data services network (i.e., the Internet or a private data network). It is the responsibility of the PS-CN to manage mobility of packet data users as well as hide mobility from the services and applications resident in the non-wireless data networks.
