We all know that the Holiday shopping season officially starts on Black Friday the day after Thanksgiving. But Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday (the biggest online shopping day of the season) is what has become known as SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY. It is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses nationwide. Last year over one hundred million people came together to shop SMALL in their communities on Small Business Saturday. This year it falls on November 24, 2012. And we are encouraging you to make it even bigger this year by shopping in your hometown & surrounding communities this Saturday. This day was introduced 3 years ago by American Express to encourage people to think about doing their holiday shopping at a local business. You can go to the American Express website for more information on the program. Shopping locally keeps tax money in our county, it keeps jobs here, it gives business owners the opportunity to earn a living here, it keeps our business districts viable & attractive, it saves you gasoline & saves you time, it provides friendly and caring service to the customer, it provides you with quality specialty items that cant be found in mall stores and often they are locally produced items, which further sustains our local economy. We are calling Small Business Saturday Small Business Black Saturday. Lets make this the best holiday season for our local businesses throughout our communities by starting your holiday shopping here on Friday, Nov 23rd and Saturday, Nov 24th and beyond.

WHERE DO WASHINGTON & WARREN COUNTIES SHOP WESTERN WELL, OF COURSE, ITS THE
FARM FAMILY PLAYERS- Seven years ago, in an effort to simplify their lives, composer/pianist and musical software designer Geoffrey Gee and Kimerer LaMothe, a philosopher and dancer who taught at Brown and Harvard Universities, gathered up their family of four children and moved from suburban Boston to a farmhouse in the hills of Hebron, New York. On Thanksgiving Saturday, November 24, the family, billing themselves as The Farm Family Players, with the addition of two-year-old Leif, celebrate a collection of milestones in their collective and respective lives in the Cabaret at Fort Salem Theater, performing an evening entitled Thanks! A Performance of Gratitude. The Cabaret at Fort Salem Theater presents The Farm Family Players in Thanks! A Performance of Gratitude for one night only, Saturday, November 24, at 8 PM. Because seating is limited, reservations are heartily encouraged. More information is available on the theater s website (fortsalemtheater.com) or by calling (518) 854-9200.
THURMAN COUNTRY CHRISTMAS BAZAAR- The Thurman Country Christmas Bazaar will open for seasonal shopping from 9 a.m.to 3 p.m., Saturday, November 24 at Thurman Town Hall, 311 Athol Road, Athol, 7 miles from Northway exit 23. Find an amazing array of handiwork by local craftsmen, who offer wares such as knitted mittens, socks and other items; fleece blankets; baked goods; hand painted Adirondack items; paintings from nature, as well as miniature Adirondack rustic furniture. One booth will offer Avon, and another photos taken by the late Stan Cranker, along with odds and ends of glassware and decorative items. Gift shoppers will find jewelry made from handmade and dyed paper beads, stained glass stepping stones, and pure Thurman maple products. The bazaar booth fees provide funds for Thurmans Christmas Basket Fund, an annual project to share holiday cheer with those living alone. Donations to support the basket project and help baking for them would be welcomed. PEMBER FUNDRAISER- On November 30 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, the Pember Library and Museum at 33 West Main St in Granville will be hosting a silent auction fundraiser of gift-able items. There are Christmas decorations, store-bought and handmade items, artist pieces and who knows what else! Items are on display at the library and you will be able to place bids now through 7:00 PM the night of the auction. Gift items for sale are also available in the library and in the museum gift shop. Many of these are handcrafted items by local artists. Check them out! To see the items online visit www.pembermuseum.wordpress.com . This auction will be slightly different from our summer annual auction. Usually we have a bid sheet where you can see the current bid amount. This will be a mystery auction. Each item has a decorated bag. Put your name, phone number, item # and the amount you wish to bid and drop the slip into the bag and no one will know who the highest bidder is until we begin processing the items from 7:00-8:00 PM. So, if you want the item, place your maximum bid! You dont need to be present to win. This is a fundraising event to help out the Pember. Coffee and desserts will be provided by the Friends of the Pember Library. WHY PAY $$$. TO HAVE YOUR APPLIANCES / SCRAP METAL REMOVED. Sanford Librarys meeting room at 629 Albany-Shaker Road from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on December 1st. The auction will have over 90 common and unusual orchids in a dazzling display, many of them in bloom or bud and available for beautiful gifts. What a wonderful opportunity to find that one-of-a-kind gift for someone special as the holidays approach. Orchids are some of the most fascinating and mysterious plants. It is no wonder they rank as the most popular of all houseplants. With a selection of phragmipediums, phalaenopsis, bulbophyllums, cattleyas and mini-cattleyas among others, the display will be well worth visiting. Viewing and bid registration will begin at 1:00 with the auction beginning at 1:30 p.m. For more information, please visit www.nenyos.org or call 518-673-3212. If a gift of a plant is a hard choice, please visit us and sign up as a member to receive a monthly 8-page informative newsletter. A single membership is $15, while a family one costs $20/year. NENYOS is a nonprofit dedicated to helping people enjoy the culture of orchids whether native to NY or from around the world. The auction supports the Speaker Fund, allowing the non-profit group to bring experts, both local and international, into the Capital Region for monthly meetings.
