What is Rhinoplasty? Update on Procedures, Cost and Risks

Rhinoplasty is a surgical cosmetic procedure that is done to restructure the nose to improve or correct its appearance and function. This is one of the most requested facial cosmetic surgeries for both men and women, and it is done purely for aesthetic purposes or for medical reasons. That is why today there are various rhinoplasty techniques used by surgeons to cater to the varied cases of patients that come in.

Reasons patients get rhinoplasty:

Patients have varied reasons for getting rhinoplasty and these would range from personal choices to simply improve the way their nose looks to having it corrected due to structural problems impeding normal breathing. The following are the specific reasons include the following:

Birth defect

Nasal birth defects such as cleft lift or a cleft palate may also require the need for rhinoplasty surgery. Other nasal problems arising from birth that can also be repaired through nose surgery include nasal bifidity, nasal duplication, and Binders Syndrome. Careful consideration must be made when considering rhinoplasty surgery at a younger age to correct these nasal deformities because the nose has not yet reached adult dimensions.

Improve Appearance

The common reason for rhinoplasty that causes it to earn big revenues are those who have it done purely for cosmetic purposes. The client base ranges from celebrities to average individuals who are seeking to enhance their facial features.

Correct Structural problems

Individuals who only realize later on that there structural problem in their nose disrupting their ability to breathe normally also seek to have this procedure done. Common examples include nasal polyps, enlarged turbinates and a deviated septum. The common concern that these patients have is that these nasal impediments can also cause them to snore, which is an embarrassment for most individuals.

Revision for a previous rhinoplasty surgery

There are cases where a revision rhinoplasty would be necessary. This is also called a secondary rhinoplasty, done to correct or improve a previous nose surgery.

Injuries and Accidents

Accidents can also cause the nose to be broken, some may not appear like it while other damage is extensive which pushing these individuals to have surgery done.

Types of Rhinoplasty
There are two major types of rhinoplasty these are the open and close rhinoplasty which are basically different approaches to how the procedure is done.

Open Rhinoplasty

This is a technique where the incisions are made outside, particularly on the fold where the face and the nose meet. This all ows the surgeon to properly visualize the internal structures of the nose enabling him to properly manipulate and fashion it to the patients desired outcome. An open rhinoplasty also makes it possible for the surgeon to work on the cartilage and the bones with better ease. This is considered to be more complex compared to a closed approach.

Close Rhinoplasty

A close rhinoplasty does not require external incisions as it is done internally in which to insert grafts or instruments to improve the shape and structure of the nose. This is done when a patients specific case calls for minimal work.

Benefits
Rhinoplasty is considered by a lot of surgeons to be a very challenging procedure, which involves a number of risks of possible complications. However, a lot of individuals see that the benefits outweigh these risks. Some people have this procedure done due to the following benefits: Creation of a proportional nasal size

Facial Symmetry Improvement of the shape and length Creates facial symmetry Improves breathing difficulties Corrects birth defects

Updates on Procedures
Over the years since 1950 or even before that, experts are constantly seeking for ways to improve rhinoplasty outcome. From improving the materials used during surgery, the techniques employed and the advanced equipment available, a procedure that is less painful and less invasive is possible. Adding to that, the recovery time is also reduced.

Laser Rhinoplasty

This procedure is a non-invasive rhinoplasty that allows faster results as it also heals quickly. However this is only applicable to specific cases and limited only to minor problems of the nose caused by thickened skin, or rhinophyma. With the use of a CO2 laser directed to the thickened area of skin on the nose eventually creating superficial damage. This would not be painful since anesthesia will be administered prior to the procedure. When the healing process occur the body then sheds the damaged skin in a similar way when you recover from severe sunburn. This eventually stimulates the body to shed the damaged tissue and grow a healthy one in its place. The treated area would have to be washed using gentle cleansers and should be protected from sun exposure. This procedure is considered to be purely cosmetic therefore it is not covered by insurance. The usual cost of laser rhinoplasty in the United States alone is between $5,000 to as high as $15,000. Some surgeons say that the name laser rhinoplasty is only a marketing hype and advertising, saying that there is really no need for laser when doing rhinoplasty surgery. They say that its purpose to treat only rhinophyma falls on a different ballpark and has nothing to do with real rhinoplasty.

PMS (Powered Micro Saw) Technique

This is developed to eliminate the complications that are related to manual osteotomies done in a rhinoplasty procedure. With traditional rhinoplasty the instruments used seem a bit daunting and traumatic. For instance the saw used to cut through bones, chisels to shape cartilages and hammers to help break certain skeletal structures. The blunt forces that these equipment provide sometimes prevent the possibility of a fine and precise bone reduction. That is why the PMS technique is introduced, in order to fine tune the approach to shaping nasal structures. The company Ben-Air made these innovations possible with its wide range of rasps, micro saws and rhinoplasty blades. They designed these to make the surgeries less invasive promoting a more precise and safe procedure. This makes resection of bony humps, dorsal rasping and medial osteotomies much easier and faster to perform. Their powered instruments, such as the electoral saw, reduce operative time and recovery, tissue swelling, and bruising.

Platelet Healing Gel

Using the patients own blood this gel is applied to the operated site for the purpose of hastening the healing process. It is basically prepared under the same principle as platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy. This is prepared prior to surgery where an ounce of blood is extracted from the patient into a tube, and then spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from other blood components. Platelets aid in the recovery and healing process. The platelet components are then mixed with another substance and then sprayed under the skin to reduce swelling and bruising. In effect this promotes faster healing after rhinoplasty procedure.

What is Rhinoplasty? Update on Procedures, Cost and Risks

Cost
Rhinoplasty surgery is an expensive procedure, which usually runs around $9,000-$11,000 in Australia. The prices vary in different regions or countries and it is also dependent on the surgeon performing the procedure, the extent, the type (e.g. primary or revision), the anesthesia used, and the clinic where you have it done. This procedure is considered to be purely cosmetic that is why as mentioned earlier, insurance companies dont provide coverage for this.

Risks
Being an invasive procedure, rhinoplasty surgery also carries a number of risks. These include:

Poor wound healing Bleeding Infection Persistent pain Difficulty breathing Contour irregularities Nasal septal perforations Skin discoloration Severe scarring Nerve Damage Possibility for a revision surgery

You can lessen the chances of these risks if you: Choose the right surgeon

Carefully plan about your surgery Make yourself healthy Practice good aftercare (e.g. proper wound care, full course antibiotic therapy followed)
