Shakespeare Delivery Project

Excerpted from Everyday Use Delivery assumed its place in the rhetoric curriculum because ancient Greece and Rome were primarily oral cultures. Speakers who wanted to excel in politics and public affairs needed to learn how to use their voices effectively, how to enunciate clearly, and how to use their bodies to gesture appropriately while they were giving a speechIn our culture delivery has taken on new meanings. [It] now refers to how the written text is, well, delivered. The delivery of text now means how it looks on page. Using a computer to produce printed text, the modern rhetor makes many choices with regard to how the text appears in order to create emphasis and support meaning. The rhetors tools for delivery include the use of Formatting and white space on the page Visuals, color, and other graphic devices (arrows, lines, borders, etc.) Hypertextual links Font sizes and styles Use of bold or italics Bullets or numbered lists (like this one!) Punctuation including: hyphens, dashes, or ellipsis marks; underlining, italics, use of capitals, or all lowercase letters, etc Assignment: Option A: Textual Delivery Using the tools of delivery, take a speech or paragraph in which you use the tools of delivery to create emphasis and reinforce the meaning, to highlight how the paragraph or speech sounds or should be spoken. Use color, spacing, and word placement as well as font sizes and font variations. Pay close attention to the meter and note if there is a pattern between regular and irregular lines. Then, attach a short essay explaining the choices youve made in color, font size, spatial presentation and graphic. Be thorough in your explanation.
