The origin of the Catholic Church dates back to the 2nd century when the term catholic was first called Katholikos, which means universal in Greek. Later, the word he katholika ekklesia was then used to describe Catholic Church in order to distinguish it from other Christian denominations. This was contained in a letter written by Saint Ignatius in about 110AD. Today, the Roman Catholic church of Christ is now the largest Christian church in the world with over 1 billion members. The Catholic Church has played a major role in Western Civilization and is regarded as one of the oldest institutions in the universe. The overall leader of the Catholic faith is the Pope. Some other leaders include Patriarchs, Cardinals and diocesan bishops. One teaching of the church is that it is the true and only Church and has Jesus Christ as the founder and the bishops as successors of the apostles of Christ with the Pope being the successor of Apostle Peter. There are several theological and methodological emphases in the Catholic doctrines which include the Dominicans, Franciscans and Jesuits. The social teachings of the Catholic Doctrines include reaching out to the poor, the needy and providing support and aid to the sick. They are arguable the biggest nongovernmental providers of medical aids and educational services in the universe. They express their vision and mission as reaching out to the poor, administering the

They transubstantiate and practice closed communion in which only members that are baptized will be able to share in the communion. The Mother of Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary, is held by the Church in high regards. There are 4 Marian dogmatic teachings done made by the church; her upheld status as the Mother of God, her eternal virginity, her faultless conception without original sin and the ascension of her body into Heaven at the end of her life on earth.
