Description of Classroom: 11 to 44 students English 12 Honors Background: Students have been introduced to Chaucer and The Canterbury Tales Students have been introduced to the themes of Courtly love and Chivalry in Medieval times Content Objective(s): Students will be able to compare, contrast, and analyze the poem Lady of Shallot to artwork by John William Waterhouse as well as a Celtic Song. Language Objective(s): Students will silently read and annotate The Lady of Shallot Students will discuss in small groups what they think the poem is about and if they notice any themes or symbols Students will participate in whole class discussion on the poem Students will view art by John William Waterhouse of The Lady of Shallot Students will listen to the song The Lady of Shallot Students will complete worksheet comparing the tone, symbols, and themes across all 3 medias Nevada Standards: Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in different media or formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively) as well as in words in order to address a question or solve a problem. Teaching Strategies: Small group discussion, whole class discussion Warm Up Activity: Please turn in your I Know Things Now revisions. Staple your final draft on top of your original draft. Then Please Respond To: o What are some of your favorite poems? Do they have anything in common? Lesson Sequence: 1. Warm up as stated above 2. Discuss warm up 3. Pass out copies of Lady of Shallot. Ask students to read silently and annotate. If they finish early, theyre to re-read and try to make connections between their observations to try and discover themes and symbols 4. Have students turn to a partner to discuss their annotations/connections of the poem (only 5 minutes) 5. Discuss as whole class what students found interesting, and if they discovered themes and symbols. 6. Project John William Waterhouses artwork Lady of Shallot. Allow students to approach board to get a closer look at the artwork, and take notes on things they notice. (1-2 minutes per group) 7. Play song Lady of Shallot and have students take notes on it as well. 8. Pass out worksheet that allows them to compare, contrast, and analyze all forms of the poem 9. Come back as whole class to discuss the worksheets. Have them turn in worksheet as ticket out the door Supplementary Materials: Poem, artwork (left on board all hour), song Review/Assessment: Discussions and worksheets Reflection:
