IFMSA Internships at the Department of Public Health and Environment, WHO Geneva
WHO Department/Unit Public Health and Environment Brief Description The role of WHOs Department of Public Health and Environment (PHE) is to promote a healthier environment, intensify primary prevention and influence public policies in all sectors so as to address the root causes of environmental threats to health. The internship program in the PHE Department focuses on a wide range of subjects, such as climate change, sustainable development, children's environmental health, interventions for a healthy environment (healthy urban transport, energy, housing, etc.) and other environmental health issues. Interns Core Duties and Responsibilities Some of the interns tasks include the following: Raise public awareness and understanding on health consequences of climate change, the co-benefits of mitigation, the role of the health sector in adaptation and mitigation effort, and on the sustainable development and health interlinkages Exchange information on how research and arguments pertaining to health can be used to unite NGOs and strengthen arguments for all the other aspects of climate change and sustainable development Act as a communication channel between WHO PHE and interested NGO groups to streamline communication Organise and coordinate a "Young Friends of Public Health" group Assist IFMSAs other activities in climate change and sustainable development, which may include advocacy work and capacity building See accompanying concept note for more details. Internship Period February to July 2013 Number of Interns to be Accepted for the Period 3-4 interns Duration of Internship per Intern Minimum of 6 weeks to maximum of 6 months

Minimum Qualifications for Interns At least 20 years old Should be a current IFMSA member, duly verified with the IFMSA NMO president (not alumni) Should be a current medical student; for those taking up medicine as a first degree, preferably with minimum of three years of medical training Should possess a passport of a WHO Member State Possesses excellent written and oral command of English Has the ability to work in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams Demonstrate passion and interest for the departments area of work Some background experience in the work of the department an advantage but not necessary Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and social media Application Requirements IFMSA WHO Internship Application Form Curriculum Vitae Motivational Letter no longer than 2 pages (Express your motivation to learn and what you want to get out of the internship; the field of interest and background relevant to the internship; clearly state the dates you will be able to begin and end your internship and which period you would like to apply for; also, please indicate specific topics of interest among the following: climate change, sustainable development, children's environmental health, interventions for a healthy environment [healthy urban transport, energy, housing, etc.] and other environmental health issues) Certification Letter from NMO President that you are an official and bonafide member (not an alumnus) of an IFMSA National Member Organization on the date of application; with NMO stamp Certification Letter from Medical School that you are an official and bonafide medical student (not an alumnus) on the date of application; if doing an intercalated Masters program, will still need to provide proof that student is unfinished in medical school

Application Procedure Submit all aforementioned documents to Renzo Guinto, MD, the IFMSA Liaison Officer to the World Health Organization, at lwho@ifmsa.org on or before December 15, 2012, 23:59 GMT. Please put Application to IFMSA WHO PHE Internship as the subject of the e-mail. Late and incomplete submissions will not be accepted. The LO WHO will send an email confirming receipt of your application papers within five working days. On January 2, 2013, the PHE Department will announce the first intern who will commence her/his internship in February 2013. All other accepted interns for the period of March July 2013 will receive an email from the PHE Department on the first week of February 2013. Applicants who were not accepted will receive an email from the LO WHO within February 2013. Funding Please note that WHO internships are non-paid. No financial support is given by the WHO or the IFMSA to the interns to cover flight, accommodation or any other cost. WHO can assist the intern in obtaining a visa by providing a letter from the supervisor. IFMSA can also provide a letter of recommendation, which may assist fundraising efforts. Should an IFMSA grant arise anytime during the application process, you will be notified upon selection. Other Reminders Interns cannot apply for a paid position at WHO during their internship or in the three months after the end of their internship. WHO Interns must have adequate medical insurance coverage during the entire period of the internships. This medical coverage must include Switzerland. Interns may participate only once in the WHO Internship Programme. Interns do not have the status of WHO staff members and shall not represent the Organization in any official capacity.
