Top 10 Hot Picks!
Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grand Reveil Watch
Price: $24,750
Official Site: Jaeger-LeCoultre.com
An 18 kt pink gold case houses the mechanical self-winding movement of the Jaeger-
LeCoultre Master Grand Reveil watch, and offers a decidedly different take on what a man’s
watch can be. The requisite high-end elements are here, of course. The crocodile leather
strap with a folding closure clasp (custom fit by your jeweler) and the perpetual calendar
with day, date and moon phase functions all seem to be de rigueur, but this watch has
something more. In addition to the mechanical movement, there is also an alarm function.

Rolex Submariner 6536/1

Price: $20,000
Official Site: Rolex.com (Also available at Govindji’s in Richardson, TX)
Sean Connery’s Bond came by his Rolex Submariner more out of film budget circumstances
than being true to his character. In fact, Ian Fleming’s literary incarnation of Bond wore
a Rolex vaguely described and matching that of a stainless steel Oyster Perpetual. As the
story goes, the production company that brought us Dr. No, the first Bond film, did not have
enough money to buy a Rolex for Sean Connery to wear, and Rolex refused to provide one
at no charge. However, the film’s producer, Cubby Broccoli, and the mastermind behind
what would become the Bond film franchise stepped up and removed the Rolex Submariner
on his own wrist and handed it to Connery just before filming began. This particular
Submariner had a black strap and is most noticeable when Bond meets Honey Ryder on
Crab Key and the two hide in the saltwater marshes from Dr. No’s henchmen. This first use
of a Rolex on film by Bond is fairly simple and devoid of any high-tech gadgetry. Like all
models before it, the case is stainless steel with a simple bezel and no date function.

Clarion MiND
Price: $649.99
Official Site: www.Clarion.com
Specs: 512MB RAM; 4GB SSD flash memory; Bluetooth; USB 2.0; MicroSD card; 11.4 oz
No doubt about it -- Clarion is one of the biggest names in car and nautical entertainment
systems, and in recent years the company has branched out into navigation and remote
starters. Now, the Clarion MiND shows that the company is moving in yet another new
direction. The gadget is billed as a “Mobile Internet Navigation Device,” which essentially
means that it’s a collection of a few satnav and cool mobile media technologies cobbled
together and packaged for the dashboard.

Lenovo Ideacentre A600

Price: Starts at $999
Official Site: Lenovo.com
Specs: Intel Core 2 Duo; 4-in-1 remote; VOIP; all-in-one; HDTV
Lenovo’s forthcoming IdeaCentre A600 all-in-one looks like Darth Vader’s own iMac.
The slick black machine has style and cool to spare, and the optional four-in-one remote
functions as a regular remote, an air mouse, a Wii-style game controller, and -- get this -- a
wireless VOIP phone. The Lenovo Ideacentre A600 is full of thoughtful design choices,
like side-mounted USB and FireWire ports, and slots for multiple kinds of memory cards.
However, the ho-hum base-model stats and excessive options will likely drive the price
sky-high for a legitimately cool machine.

anything is possible. Well, if we lived in any other locale, that logic would probably hold up. However, since Texas is our home, it’s about

RJ Profile of the Month

Sangeeta Bachani
Music Mantra: A treat for the ears
by Ali Fazal

At Salaam Namaste, we recently received a letter to the editor this past month from
a devoted reader that brought up a very interesting point. The reader pointed out
that media today is structured in a very misogynistic way. There is tons of media
devoted to the trials and tribulations of youth (think Gossip Girl), massive amounts
of media devoted to career-powered businesswomen (think Sex and the City), and
of course, a surplus of media reaching out to males of all ages (think of every
sporting event or auto show ever produced). However, our dear reader pointed out
that there is little to no dedication to providing housewives and stay-at-home moms
with entertainment and enjoyment that is catered specifically to them. Well, our
reader is in luck: Sangeeta Bachani, popular Radio Salaam Namaste programmer,
is out to shake up that philosophy, and have a little fun along the way.

With her unique presentation, Sangeeta’s a certain motif or idea (romantic songs,

classical dance from the north East Indian state of Manipur

Manipuri is the classical dance from the North

East Indian state of Manipur. Its themes are
devotional and are performed on religious
occasions and in temples throughout the area.
It is even often referred to as "sankirtan".
The term Manipuri actually covers a number
of dance forms from the region. The most
important being the Ras Lila and the Pung
Cholom.

MUSIC
There is a very characteristic style of music for Manipuri
dance. The music is generally similar to the larger
body of north Indian (Hindustani) music. However
there are differences in nomenclature of rags, tals, and
the style of presentation is somewhat different.

Manipuri is unique among the classical Indian dances

in that the instrumentation is a central part of the dance,
rather than as a side accompaniment. Dances are very
much based upon the cymbals (kartal or manjira)
and the cylindrical drum known as Manipuri mridang
or pung. Unlike other classical dances where the
instrument is merely used as an accompaniment, the
pung and the kartal (manjira) are actually used in the
dance. Other common instruments are the harmonium,
pena, bansuri, shankh (conch), and esraj.

From other desi-centric films I’ve
reviewed, I’ve come to expect a mostly
empty theater, filled with a few chatty
aunties clad in salwar kameez and
sneakers. The breakdown here though,
was totally unexpected. As I climbed up
the stairs to find an empty group of seats
for me and my friends, I was astounded
by the variety: I saw a frantic suit-clad
lawyer, tapping away on his Blackberry,
desperate to compose that last email
before the lights dimmed. I saw a group
of giddy teenage girls, eagerly gossiping
about how cute they thought lead star
Dev Patel’s British accent was when
he appeared on Letterman the night
before. I saw older couples, younger
couples, South Asians, Americans, and
everything in between.

That’s really the special thing about

this little film-- the impact it’s had on such
a widespread and diverse movie-going
population. After all, who knew that a
film with a Welsch director, an Indo-Brit
leading man, and an Indian heroine
could have such a global impact and
win the Golden Globe award for Best
Picture?

After seeing the film, I understood

perfectly why this film has become a
worldwide sensation. Though the film
is set solely in the slums of Mumbai, it
has themes that appeal to individuals
everywhere: Loss, Love, Redemption,
and the ever-present Rags to rich

the globe.

By Sajit, Washington DC (excerpt from desiblogs.blogspot.com)
It was a quiet Saturday evening; my wife & I were hosting a newly
acquainted Desi couple at our house for the first time. After a typical
hearty South Asian dinner, I suggested that we go watch a movie. “Sounds
like a plan, which movie?” was the question posed by the husband of the
guest couple. When I replied with the words “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”
there was a moment of tense silence. I felt as though I had said something
insulting. The wife from the guest couple, noticing the weird halt of
dialogue, quickly chimed in by saying “Oh! He hates ‘Desi’ movies. He
just thinks that they are a waste of time. Sometimes I even have to drag
him to ‘Desi’ functions. When we were buying our house and the deal
was nearly done, he saw a ‘Desi’ couple standing outside another house
on the same street and he cancelled the deal saying that I don’t want to
live in an area surrounded by Desi’s.” Without saying a word I stood up
with an amused expression on my face and walked away from the living
room, where we were sitting, and went into my room and brought back
one of my wife’s hand held make-up mirrors and handed it to my guest
and said “In case you hadn’t noticed.”

It’s truly said that “Matches are made in

love that keep their relationship alive for several

Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia
The latest gossip doing the rounds in our saucy little tinseltown is
regarding the state of affairs between dimply Preity Zinta and the
dashing heir of Bombay Dyeing Industries, Ness Wadia. An incident
that gives credibility to the speculation that Preity-Ness are heading
towards splitville: Preity was left stranded on a road in sweltering heat
by her darling boyfriend.

Rumors have always been rife regarding the relationship of the

unmarried couple. Reportedly, high socialite Maureen Wadia, mother
of Ness, disapproves of Preity, in spite of her attempts to look classy.

They are soon planning to get married and spend their life happily
together. Preity, despite being relatively out of sight these days film-
wise, is still a hot star and thus, this stunning couple is definitely on
the list.

for Akshay Kumar, because after he married her, his movies hit the
bullseye at the box office and his recent blockbuster “Singh Is Kinng”
gave him the title of the new ‘Kinng of Bollywood’.

After marriage, Twinkle said goodbye to Bollywood, and is keeping

3. Poor Shamita Shetty is apparently

drama seems to follow. The actress was recently
scheduled to be the show-stopper at celeb designer
Manish Malhotra’s recent fashion show, but things
went awry backstage fairly quickly. Upon arrival,
Kareena was apparently upset because her dressing
room was only separated from the rest of the female
models by a curtain. Bebo was apparently afraid
that the models would try and take a picture of her
changing. After Kareena’s bad luck with camera
phone leaks (remember her kissing scandal with
Shahid Kapoor?), its no wonder that Kareena was
cautious this time around.

5. Konkona Sen Sharma might be

covering her eyes in shame sometime soon. In
last month’s Luck by Chance, the Bengali beauty
apparently has a romantic number with Farhan
Khan in which she is wearing a rather revealing
chiffon sari. However, being the foodie that she is,
Konkona didn’t bother dieting or toning up before
filming, thus creating a rather, um, flabby effect on
screen. Next time you hike up your top Koko, try a
few sit-ups in your trailer first.

After a false start with ‘Money Money’, one almost looses all
hopes with Victory. However, ‘Balla Utha’ turns out to be a victorious
song followed by the theme track Victory which goes with the spirit
of the film. However, to bring some variety into the proceedings, ‘Tu

Luck By Chance (3/5 rating)

As 2009 kick starts, Luck By Chance brings with it a different
flavor of music to it, something which is completely different from
some of the biggest hits that 2008 saw. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy push
the envelope, as expected, and dare to do something different in a
film which is being pitched in a commercial market. Though it would
be wrong to expect this album to take a thundering start at the music
stands due to its unique flavor and unconventional style, as an entire
soundtrack it does work for the film. Luck By Chance is one of those
albums where one can’t expect a single number to make waves but
listen to it as an original soundtrack and it certainly turns out to be
pretty enjoyable.
PICK’S: ‘Sapnon Se Bhare Naina’, ‘Yeh Zindagi Bhi’, ‘O Rahi Re’
