ISC1002 Lesson 1.1 Homework Solutions 1. What are fundamental units?

Fundamental units are the units of mass, length, time and temperature. Unit of length is the meter (m) Unit of mass is the kilogram (kg) Unit of time is the second (s) Unit of temperature is the kelvin (K) Use fundamental units to obtain the units of area, volume, speed and density. The unit of area is square meter (m2) The unit of volume is cubic meter (m3) If length is measure in centimeter (cm) volume is measured in cm3. 1 cm3 is the same as 1 milliliter (mL) distance speed = time Distance is measured in m and time is measured in s Speed is measured in m/s mass density = volume Mass is measured in kg and volume is measured in m3. Unit for measuring density is kg/m3 When mass is measured in g and volume is measured in mL, the unit of density is g/mL. How many millimeters (mm) make a meter (m)? How many cm make a meter? 1000 mm = 1 meter 100 cm = 1 meter Convert 35 cm to m. To convert cm to m, divide by 100. 35 35 cm = = 0.35 m 100 How many grams are there in a kilogram? 1 kg = 1000 g Convert 256 g to kg. To convert g to kg, divide by 1000. 256 256 g = = 0.256 kg 1000 How many meters are there in a kilometer? 1 km = 1000 m

If an object moves 20 m in 5 seconds, what is its speed? distance 20 m speed = = = 4 m/s time 5s Write 36 km/h in m/s 36 km 36000 m 36 km/h = = = 10m / s 1h 3600 s How many milliliters (mL) are there in a liter (L)? 1 L = 1000 mL If the mass of 1 L of water is 1 kg, what is the mass of 1 mL of water? 1 L = 1000 mL; 1 kg = 1000 g The mass of 1 mL of water is 1 g. The density of water is 1 g/mL How many cm3 make a mL? How many cm3 are there in a L? 1 mL = 1 cm3 Since there are 1000 mL in a L, there are 1000 cm3 in a L. Write an equation connecting M and d if M varies directly as d. Draw a graph showing how M changes with d. M varies directly as d means that M = k d where k is a constant. This is similar to the equation in algebra, y = mx. A graph of y against x will be a straight line. The constant m is the slope of this graph. Similarly if M = k d, a graph of M on the y-axis and d on the x-axis will be a straight line passing through the origin. The slope of this graph will be the constant k The length of a room is 5.2 m and its width is 3.4 m. What is the area of the room? What is the area of a table of length 1.2 m and width 0.6 m? How many tables can be arranged in the room without wasting any space? Area of the room = length width = 5.2 m 3.4 m = 17.7 m2 Area of the table = length width = 1.2 m 0.6 m = 0.7 m2 The number of tables that will fit kin the room is
