However, it is not merely the beaches, mountains, and waterfalls that have millions of people eager to visit, but also other exciting aspects of Bali such as its art and cultural festivals.

As for cultural festivals, there have been many in Bali throughout the years, and the local government together with Balinese artists and organizations have made it possible to bring these festivals to life annually. Everyone is welcome to witness the beauty and uniqueness of Balinese art and culture, which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Some events are held on specific occasions, for example during full moon or other days that are considered important. But most of the bigger festivals are held between June and November, such as the Kuta Karnival, Sanur Village
and preserve unique natural art. The event takes place at the Denpasar Art Center for an entire month. Nine regencies in Bali participate in this festival and it is used as a means for local artists to express and introduce natural art and culture in various forms such as dances and other performances. With rapid technological development and other global advancements, it is important for the roots of Balinese culture to be preserved. The main things that you wont want to miss at this festival are the art parade, performances, exhibitions, and the festival itself that is held from afternoon until night.

Now the economy of South Bali region is really booming. There are various programs to entertain visitors at the Kuta Karnival, such as a music festival featuring local bands, a culinary bazaar from hotels and restaurants in Kuta, a kite festival, surfing contest and paddle for peace with local surfers and tourists, a baby turtle release and unique competitions for waiters and waitresses.

Aside from Denpasar, South Bali also hosts great international festivals. The Kuta Karnival is held for 5 days, normally in late October to early November at Kuta Beach. The festival has been held annually since the Bali Bombing tragedy in

The Legian Beach Festival was first initiated in 2007 and is held along Legian Beach over four days. The participants of the festival are not merely from Bali, but come from many regions in Indonesia. They come to participate in

the advancement of tourism in Bali and Indonesia. This year marked the 6th year of this special event. A Miss Legian Beach Festival Show and the Ladies Surfing Competition were held in addition to a painting competition with professional painters, cultural parades, a food festival, fashion show, live music, and the popular fun bike race.
The four-day festival includes interesting plays, both traditional and colossal. The planting of coral was among the interesting pro-environmental activities at the festival. Also included in the yearly festivities are a food festival, an ogoh-ogoh parade, and a music festival where both local and international musicians perform.

Lovina Festival
Besides the festivals mentioned above, there are also festivals in North Bali drawing the attention of local and international tourists. This three-day festival aims to invite tourists and locals alike to discover and explore the diversity of cultures in North Bali. Sanur Village Festival

Besides Kuta, Sanur is another area where international festivals are held. The Sanur Village Festival is a big festival that has been held annually since 2006, located at Sunrise Beach in Sanur. The festival usually takes place in August and lasts for five days. This festival was initiated by the Sanur Development Foundation and has contributed to the advancement of the potential and creativity of the people of Sanur. Some examples of the programs at the Sanur Village Festival are a kite festival, bonsai exhibition, the Sanur Village Cycling Tour, the Sanur Open Golf Tournament, an

The Nusa Dua Fiesta is an art, cultural, music, sport, and tourism festival that aims to promote an image of Nusa Dua area supporting environmental sustainability and preserving coastal and marine ecosystems. The Nusa Dua Fiesta is held every year in Nusa Dua, in the Bali Tourism Development Center to be exact. This is one of the biggest festivals in Bali that also promotes the cultural richness of Indonesia through performances and craft exhibitions showcasing the many ethnic groups of Indonesia.

There are several ways for you to achieve the shabby chic look in your home: 1. Buy antique stuff. Go to the flea market every once and awhile and take a

Buy new furniture with an antiquestyle finish. It is sometimes hard for us to find what we are looking for at a flea market, so for you who have experienced this situation, simply buy new furniture with a custom made antique finish. There are two types of finishes that you can choose from. The first is Distressed
Finishing, or a finishing method by rough application of paint with some sanding, and Faux Painting, a finishing method by stacking multiple colors on the furniture and then sanding it so that there will be an impression of a different old color layer. 3. The use of natural colors like white, sky blue, rose pink, and beige on the walls of the house. The warmth in the room is one of the main characteristics of shabby chic, therefore the use of a soft tone color is a must.
4. The use of accessories such as a mosaic of antique frames on the wall or a big chandelier over your table will be able to give you the feel of shabby chic.
A TOUCH OF SHABBY CHIC

The historical value of antique furniture or accessories will be able to give soul to a room with a modern minimalist interior design. Here are some do-it-yourself ideas to bring shabby chic to your modern minimalist home: 1. Purchase a vintage tea set from China; the beauty of the original china cups will be the center of attention for your modern dining table. Its okay to combine different cup patterns because literal cohesiveness is not the way to achieve shabby chic. 2. Pair a vintage coffee table with a sheep leather beanbag in your living room. 3. Use a birds nest ornament as a fruit basket it will look very pretty in your dining room.
4. Use vintage cans as spice containers for a dash of cuteness in your modern kitchen. 5. Add a bed runner with vintage floral motifs to a white bed sheet to provide warmth to your modern designed bed. 6. Replace your sofa cover with a selection of soft colored floral fabrics and pair with a vintage trunk as a coffee table.

The menu is Italian-French inspired cuisine created by the Executive Chef Roberto Bogni, a talented chef hailing from Italy whose vision is to integrate French culinary techniques, which he considers to be the finest in the world. His dishes are professionally prepared and reflect a simple concept produced with carefully selected ingredients. This month he has a specially crafted menu that you wont find any day but Christmas; it is an invigorating interpretation of Italian simplicity and French cuisine. It starts with Fried Pan Slices of Foie Gras, Pate aRaviole in mushroom and black truffle emulsion, served by the usual fleet of diligent and cheerful waiters as an appetizer. The Confied Salmon with pine nut emulsion, haricots verts and chanterelle mushroom is another option. After the first round of food, its easy to get into the rhythm. The impeccably fresh entre, tender thinly sliced Confied Duck Magret and Foie Gras sprinkled with tasty sauce, is served with sweet peach pure
and peach slices to add a contrasting texture to the plate. It is definitely a well thought out dish; the color combination is beautiful and elegant appealing to the eye and delicious to the palate. The medium rare Fillet Mignon is topped with a crust of pistachio and served with mushroom sauce, and the caponata and saut of julienne slices of eggplants, zucchini, and red bell pepper is also outstanding. It gives a mixture of flavors and textures, a straight-up spectacular succulent meat and crusty pistachio, worth every calorie. For dessert, the comfort-oriented chocolate dessert Cioccolato Guanaja Caldo arrived with pineapple sorbet on the side smooth, soft, and fresh. Following that was Mr. Ginger Beam, a blend of Jim Beam, Cointreau, pineapple juice, grilled ginger-infused honey, and ginger syrup served in a shiny metallic mug. It was a refreshing closure for the night. If you miss the opportunity to enjoy this impressive Christmas menu, dont fret. Among the diverse entres offered, they recommended that I savour three of their most-acclaimed dishes. The first was the Grilled Salmon topped with compound herb and lemon butter, coupled with seasonal vegetables delivered in an unpretentious presentation. Its a simply seasoned and well-cooked salmon; the crispy skin gives way to succulent salmon with just the right texture a perfect
example of less is more. Next was the succulent Moroccan Lamb Chops flavored with Shiraz Honey Sauce, served with garlic and parsley baby potatoes and eggplant. The third dish was the delightful Hand-Rolled Lasagna with Ricotta/ Bchamel, Asparagus and Roasted Red Peppers, a twist on the old classic topped with Podomoro Sauce. Soft, creamy and fresh, it is another obvious example of Sabeens vision of food. Among the notable desserts are the White Chocolate Cheesecake drizzled with strawberry sauce and white chocolate, the Old fashion Apple Brown Butter Tart, and the baked Greek Baklava Phyllo pastry with walnuts, cinnamon, lemon and honey. Other menu highlights include the refreshingly sweet Ice Mint Mocha a mixture of coffee with chocolate chip ice cream, chocolate sauce, milk, and whipped cream, and the creative Rainbow Party Tubes, which are served in a big bowl to display colourful tubes of vodka,

Five-star accommodation, fine dining, boutiques, cocktail bars, all the luxuries you could wish for and all the fineries that money can buy. And it all sits alongside the same old locals who still have the same old ways. Will there be a clash? Inevitably, more money raises expectations. When someone spends big dollars on a meal, they dont want to be kept waiting for the food. When people order expensive cocktails they want them served perfectly. When theyre in luxurious surroundings they expect immaculate service and exceptional customer care. How will all this affect the happy-go-lucky Balinese and their sunny disposition? Their laid back approach to life, which is something to be treasured, could be under threat with the prevalent critique of the wealthy holiday-maker. Ive seen a lot of tourists tutting at bars and restaurants recently, people indignantly huffing and raising their eyebrows, politely indicating that theyve been waiting for far too long. Weve all been there staff gliding past you seemingly oblivious to your need for another beer, or leaning on the far end of the bar while you frantically wave your arms about trying to get their attention. It can be annoying, but its not life threatening, and its only actually mildly irritating until we decide to make an issue of it. Waiting a few extra moments wont kill you, wont lead to starvation, and it wont sober you up. And lets face it, once theyre dealing with you, theyre effusively polite and super friendly. And why should we accept it? The answer is simple everything is everything. Its all related and its all part of the same entity. Its just the other side of the same coin. The same characteristic that shaped this island, welcomed us in and charmed us. And heres the point. If they werent like this, Bali wouldnt be Bali. The more we tut and complain, the more likely we are to ruin what is quintessentially the Balinese spirit, and a huge part of their culture. Then this island would end up as just another resort. Devdan Treasure of the Archipelago is a spectacular stage show at the Bali Nusa Dua Theatre. Its a must-see show when youre visiting Bali. Taken from the ancient Sanskrit
udeng, a traditional Balinese headband, and so the magical journey across the vast archipelago of Indonesia begins. With hi-tech special effects, a huge backdrop of Candi Bentaran adorns the stage. The serene sights and sounds of a traditional Balinese village set the scene, as the children find themselves amongst Balinese villagers. The performers celebrate with a rice harvest dance and the kite-flying season. A dramatic ending occurs as a rumbling volcano engulfs the village. The children arrive back at the treasure chest and this time a silken piece of fabric swallows them as they disappear beneath its power and reappear in a small traditional village in Sumatra. One of the things Sumatra is known for is the beautiful material its produces in endless colors and
patterns, known as songket. The village weavers create the beautiful songket fabric with their magical looms. The stage is set like a bustling street market where vendors sell vegetables, fruit, pottery and local wares. Within the market, performers play with fiery whips, juggle, and dance for rain. I was certainly amazed by the torrential rain that poured down inside of the theatre. Also thrilling was the Saman Dance performance and aerial acrobatic performance high above the stage using only silk material. Next, a magical keris (Javanese traditional ceremonial knife used by warriors long ago) takes the children to a township on the island of Java, where warriors reign supreme. A fight breaks out and a warrior falls, but the good spirits
richness in Indonesia is a gift from God. The story begins in Bali where two young children get separated from a group of tourists and find themselves lost in the jungle. Later they find a hidden treasure chest full of ancient artifacts. Each artifact represents a large island in Indonesia, and when the children hold each artifact it magically transports the children to the island it represents. First they find an

The children are entertained with a traditional puppet show, where the puppets come alive. The specially designed multipurpose stage features many surprises for the audience. Aside from the hydraulics, rotating stage and water pool, the stage also supports the performers who do remarkable aerial acrobatics. In the Borneo scene, I was mesmerized by a pair of dancers skillfully gliding through the air. It was a beautiful and spectacular aerial act. The last island the children visit is Papua. The tribes of Papua are people bound by the good earth and the bounty of nature. They are extremely talented
hunters and wood carvers. From under the majestic limbs of the banyan tree, across the still waters of the grand lake floating on a simple raft, the villagers land upon the shore. There is a celebration at hand, the preparation for an upcoming annual festival. They paint their faces in the ancient way, adorn themselves in tribal dress, and prepare for the festival of manhood. All the while the children witness the full spectacle of dance and traditional lore. As the children journey to the islands of Bali, Java, Sumatra, Borneo and Papua, the audience comes along to explore the genuine heritage and beauty of Indonesia with the shows songs and dances, accented by dramatic and thrilling action and music, dance and aerial acrobatics. Surprisingly, only 63 actors and actresses perform in this colossal show. I cant
imagine how they went back and forth from the stage to backstage to change their dazzling costumes for each scene. Upon landing in Yogyakarta youre instantly inundated with the many trips and tours you can take part in, all organized and formalized, safe and secure. But rest assured, you do have a choice. If you want to see this wonderful country in all its splendor, you must go it alone. Fortune favors the brave, and all you need is a motorbike.
by undulating rice fields, lush green and effervescent, set in rectangle blocks like a patchwork quilt and backed by thick rows of palm trees, a symbol of nature that is the hallmark of Asia. Another few turns and youll go through unkempt jungle enveloping charming roadside villages, with smiley children waving hellos or looking at you openmouthed in fascination, and cute and colorful little bungalows of green, yellow or blue. Get back on the main road and youll pass over a steel bridge where you should softly apply the brakes and gaze on either side of you at another arresting sight the beautiful rolling river, fragmented by rocks, and the contours of the bedrock, with lush fertile flat wetlands running alongside of it. If you turn towards the famous Cerme caves, the road winds its way past more wondrous green and ever-changing landscape, with thick vegetation and
ravel south out of the city and head towards the various beaches lying in wait. Turn off the main road and youll be surrounded
overhanging trees that offer cooling shade, whilst sudden breaks in the foliage reveal an ocean of multi-layered green countryside cascading down towards the horizon. The road gets steeper as you wind your way up the mountain, through humble roadside settlements where people lounge around and throw you a wave as you ride by, before turning off toward the famous Cerme caves. The road becomes a track, then a broken up mess of dirt and rocks as you climb on up, with more turns and steeper trails, through more forlorn settlements and simple wooden shacks and then finally, you arrive at the top of the world. A rock mountain face rises up on one side, daunting and commanding, with a view to make you gasp on the other. Magnificent and entrancing, peaceful and still, and also a little humbling. You can then enter the caves and proceed into the darkness, aided and abetted by a genial guide and his trusted torch. Take a little breather then get back on the main road, which will carry you on down towards the famous Parangtritis
Beach, the playground of Yogyakartans. Once you get past the initial gathering of stalls and parking space traders youll be greeted by another striking sight the dark blue Indian Ocean and its furious swell, with angry white foam and waves crashing down uninterrupted as far the eye can see. The sand on the beach is grey, but brought to life by colorful horse-and-carts, kites that flutter in the skies above, and dune buggies zooming playfully around. Along the humble promenade you have a whole community of warungs, restaurants, bamboo benches, and roadside stalls selling all the local foodstuffs, barbequed meats, fruits, and best of all, fresh fish, which is grilled right in front of you and tastes delicious in the salty air. The beach is not classically beautiful no white sand paradise but is given character by the sand dunes that rise up defiantly here and there. Head west and leave the madding crowd behind as the crowds thin out and the dunes get bigger, swollen by the raging wind swirling all around you and whistling past your ears with a deafening sound. Cruise along the seaside road that

winds through what are now colossal sand hills, imposing and vast in numbers, with ramshackle huts and patches of farmed land here and there, sparse vegetation cropping up in little clusters, and solitary outposts which seem empty and deserted but show signs of life if you look close enough. Ride back a couple of kilometers, then head west again as you go through spectacular fields with different shades of glistening green, diverse vegetation with trees and plants and paddy fields, and ant-like workers bent over and tending to the rice. Eventually you get to Samas Beach, and the contrast couldnt be greater stark and bleak, almost sinister, with dark volcanic sand and even bigger waves than before, and the wind is even more powerful. Stop and look around its desolate, melancholic, and in its own unique way, stunning. Alternatively, you can head east out of Yogya towards Wonosari through the mountains. The road snakes its way through some untouched jungle and duller green vegetation as you get further away from the sea, then thick patches of trees and unexpected openings reveal spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding area. The road winds through small and quiet mountainside villages, dense forest, deep crevices and canyons with red rock, fields of tall grass, and meandering rivers. You arrive at the sprawled-out town that is Wonosari, busy but gentle, so stop for a coffee and a recharge then turn right, heading south to the Indian Ocean. The road meanders through more rock

and forest, slowly inching its way down the mountain, as you see palm trees re-appear once more and the green gets brighter. Then almost without warning you land on Baron Beach. Youll see a cove surrounded by steep hills completely covered by thick green shrubbery, a beach of light-brown sand that stretches for a hundred meters to the waterfront, a fleet of traditional fishing boats moored up on the shore beyond the tide-line, full of color and lined up like an armada waiting to go into battle, and then beyond, you have the sea. A different color than Parangtritis, not as dark but blue with a green hue, calmer, yet still the waves roll incessantly in. Walk around the corner and you find a river that comes gushing out of every pore of the mountainside through the gaps in the rock-face, forming a pool of
fresh water, an exquisite turquoise gently swirling as it meets the sea creeping in along one edge of the beach. If you walk up the path roughly cut into one side of the cove to the edge of the cliff, youll have a breathtaking birdseye panoramic view of the whole scene. Its only then that you notice the beach is actually split into two, one side being mostly inaccessible due to a small stretch of water, but an actual mirror image of the populated side, just devoid of people, like a before and after snapshot. Look east and youll see the whole coastline stretching for miles. Continue on your journey and the next beach youll come to is Kukup, and this ones different still. Small, another cove but with lighter brown sand, the main mass of water kept at bay by a wide bedrock of
shallow water where the rocks are covered in moss, teeming with tiny crabs scuttling about and small fish darting to and fro. The sides of the cove are covered by squat palm trees, their pointed leaves jutting out at all angles giving the hillside a spiky hairstyle look. These places are not manicured or tailor-made for tourists you dont get hordes of snap-happy westerners and because of that you feel like youre in on a little secret. There are more than twenty beaches spread out along this coastline, not glamorous or postcard picture-perfect but unique nonetheless, each one with its own feel and distinct flavor. t seems like just yesterday we were celebrating the approach of 2012, but in the next couple weeks we will soon be welcoming 2013. Though some might choose to stay in
Indah (TMII), or Ancol Dreamland, then find a cozy spot to watch the light or fireworks show. Jakartas fireworks might not be as big as some other cities in the world, but it is certainly enough to keep crowds entertained. Ancol Dreamland is another center of activity. The fireworks at Ancol will be set off at Carnival Beach, Festival Beach, and Putri Duyung. You should be able to find all kinds of entertainment, from concerts to all night long puppet shows to betawi lenong (drama performance). Meanwhile, TMII also usually offers a merry celebration from evening to early morning, featuring fireworks, a band, traditional performances and games. The roads in Jakarta will be even more chaotic than usual on New Years Eve, but it will not stop Jakartans from going out and celebrating. Make sure to go early so you can reach the center of the celebrations. For safety reasons, be careful of pickpockets when bringing your phone, wallet or bag in crowded areas.
Venues with a View

A restaurant or bar can also be a nice place to spend New Years Eve. Skye Bar & Restaurant is probably one of the most recommended restaurants in Jakarta for New Years Eve dinner. Located at Menara BCA building on the 56th floor, guests can enjoy Jakartas spectacular night view and the fireworks display with the comforts of indoor fine dining. If you want an outdoor setting where you can enjoy a view of the city lights, head to Shy Rooftop, Shelter Sky, or The Edge in the Kemang area. These are great rooftop restaurants and bars. You can also try Fable and Lucy in the Sky at Fairgrounds Sudirman. These venues often have extra programs to entertain guests on New Years Eve, from live bands to DJs.

For those who are looking for a countdown craze, Jakarta has some spots where many people gather as the clock counts down. These spots are suitable only if you are interested in being surrounded by big crowds. There is usually no entry fee and the countdown is often broadcast on radio and television. The Festival Sinema Prancis 2012, or the French Film Festival 2012, will be held from 11 - 12 December at Cineplex 21 in Beachwalk Bali, following its premiere in Jakarta from 8 - 10 December. In January of 2013 the festival will continue on to the cities of Balikpapan, Bandung, Lampung, Makassar, Malang, Medan, Semarang, Solo, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta. When the festival started in 1996 it was the first foreign film festival of its kind in Indonesia. The festival continues to undergo dynamic transformation, adapting to developments in both the French and Indonesian film industries. This year the festivals vision is to establish an ongoing program. It kicked off the year with various programs in Indonesia and now culminates with the film festival to bring a colorful cinematic experience to the country. The Festival Sinema Prancis is joining forces with the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in Singapore and Cineplex 21 to offer a selection of films that have never been shown in Indonesia before, covering all different genres such as action, thriller, romantic comedy, and drama. The festival will be graced by appearances from several French actors and directors including Oliver Assayas, a very important figure in the French Film world who will come specifically to Jakarta to give a master class at Cineplex 21 Plaza Indonesia on December 8, 2012. Also taking place for the first time at the Festival Sinema Prancis is a short film competition to find emerging Indonesian directors and give them a chance to present their work to a larger audience. The Bali Rainbow Community has just held a Gala Charity Event at The Royal Beach Resort Seminyak on December 1st. The event, which coincided with World AIDS Day 2012, was themed Listen (to the information) Learn (about your status) Live (healthy). As the virus continues to rampage through the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community and the general community in Bali, immediate and urgent assistance is needed to educate people on the importance of safe sex, getting tested, knowing your HIV status, and if positive, learning how to live a long and healthy life. This event helps raise funds to support HIV/ AIDS patients with much needed support and education. Tickets were Rp. 175.000 per person and included a standup cocktail reception, beer, wine, and soft drinks. Aside from door prizes, raffles, and auctions, guests enjoyed the DIVA LA VIDA show featuring Balis leading drag performers from Balis best gay bars. All profits from the evening were donated to the cause. At the same charity event in 2010, the association was able to raise over 126 million Rupiah for Yayasan Gaya Dewata.

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For Bali Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctorprescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace uids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
