Sandisfield will be celebrating its 250th birthday and all are invited to the big, event slated for the July 27 to 29 weekend. The 250th Birthday Committee has been hard at work over the past several years and is excited to announce the schedule of events for the weekend. The Sandisfield Arts Center will be hosting, Rascals & Others, directed by Ben Luxon, on Friday, July 27 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., recreating a sketch through time with a dozen unique skits representing the history of Sandisfield. Seasoned actors will be combined with local residents, highlighting their recollections of an earlier Sandisfield. Following the historical skits, fireworks will light the sky at Carr Field on Route 57, between the cemetery and large red barn. Ye Olde Lebanon Towne Militia, with local residents Elizabeth and John Kuzmech, will re-create a historical encampment, beginning on Friday and remaining through the weekend at Carr Field. There will be a country fair at the field with food, crafts, silent auction, childrens activities, and demonstrations during the day on Saturday and Sunday. The childrens activities, sponsored by the Sandisfield Recreation Committee, will consist of fun-filled competitions, including sack races, pie-eating contests, egg-throws, and threelegged relays, among others. The Housatonic Philharmonics will entertain on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Later on Saturday evening, the Fire Department will be serving hamburgers and hotdogs before a community dance with Harms Way Band at the American Legion Pavilion on Route 8. There will be a dessert potluck extravaganza during the event. In addition to the country fair and encampment on Sunday, there will be a Classic Car Show coordinated by the Yankee Street Rods, a club from Great Barrington and a pie contest organized by Barbara Riiska. Other special activities and projects in honor of Sandisfields 250th birthday are planned during the weeks preceding the July weekend. Interpretive guided walks will be offered, including a special exploration along the original Knox Trail in Sandisield led by Thomas Ragusa and Ron Bernard on July 21 (raindate July 22). Participants should meet at North Beech Plain Road at Perry Road. The Berkshire Natural Resources Council has teemed with the Committee to offer guided walks, including an off-trail, interpretive hike on the Clam River (July 28 at 10:00 a.m., meet at the Sandisfield Town Hall Annex). Additional information is available at www.BNRC.net. A Butterfly Walk will be led by naturalist Laura Rogers-Castro at Snow Farm, 16 South Beech Plain Road, on July 14 at 10:00 a.m. The Sandisfield Eats cookbook, published by the Historical Society and the Sandisfield Then and Now history book have both been produced in honor of the 250th birthday. The SandisWALL commemorative project, highlighting current town residents also is scheduled to be completed this year. The Committee is seeking craft and food vendors (contact Barbara Cormier at 258-4402) wishing to be a part of the celebration. Additional information on the weekend is available at www.sandisfield.info and on Facebook (Sandisfield 250th Birthday).

Roland Tessier is the owner of Rolands Motor Works (RMW) and the creator behind the custom motorcycle line known as Rolands Thunder. Well-known for his expertise as a Harley-Davidson mechanic, he takes pride in his service and retail shop and in his custom motorcycle creations, which have won a host of awards at motorcycle shows across the United States. Roland began working on motorcycles, and anything else that had an engine, in his youth. He worked at various service stations as an auto mechanic before discovering his passion for working on motorcycles in 1968 after a friend told him about an opening at Tibbys Harley-Davidson in Springfield, MA. With a history of owning a Yamaha snowmobile shop and of being a co-owner of Easthampton Harley-Davidson in the early 1970s, Roland moved on to building and operating his own business and building V-Twin engine masterpieces from the ground up. Although his current business has no corporate affiliation with Harley-Davidson he has gone through all of the Harley-Davidson service school programs throughout the years and few other motorcycle mechanics, locally or nationally, can compare. He admits enjoying working on performance machines with the motorcycle being much more sensitive than most to engine adjustments. Roland customizes Harley-Davidsons, a host of other brands of motorcycles and is often seen giving honest advice on how to best customize a motorcycle given varying budgets. It is common for most motorcycle enthusiasts to want to make changes to their motorcycle each year to add to its look and/or overall performance. Then again, Roland states, it is not uncommon to see someone pay $15,000.00 for a brand new Harley and then invest as much in order to add horsepower, change the frame, add chrome parts, get a new paint job, and moreI could just as easily build exactly what was wanted from scratch. Rolands Motor Works first opened in 1991 and initially he planned to give his new business five years to succeed. After many successful years and large additions to both the shop and staff, Rolands Motor Works is here to stay! In the words of many of his satisfied customers, Nobody works on my bike but Roland!

The Otis Police Department would like to extend a warm welcome its two newest police officers. Ken Pettibone and Stephanie Fredsall have recently been hired as part-time officers. Ken is a graduate of Lee High School, and currently resides in Becket. He enjoys motorcycle riding with his son, as well as hunting, fishing, mountain biking, and spending time with his family. Ken is a recent graduate of the MA Criminal Justice Training Academy at S.T.C.C. , and is also employed as an officer with the Great Barrington Police Dept. Stephanie is a graduate of Monument Mountain High School, and is also from the area. She, too, is a recent graduate of the MA Criminal Justice Training Academy at S.T.C.C. Stephanies interests include spending time with her family, fishing, swimming and camping. Congratulations to you both! On another note, The Otis Police Department participated in a joint off-road vehicle enforcement exercise on Saturday, June 9th. This event was organized by the Tolland Police Department. Ten officers from Otis, Tolland, the MA Environmental Police Dept., and the MDC Police participated. Officers enforced recreational vehicle laws pertaining to proper registration of off road vehicles, as well as trespassing issues. We patrolled land belonging to MDC, the Tunxis Club, and the Springfield Water Works. We will be conducting a similar event in Otis at the end of June, and through the summer months as well. If you are having a problem with recreational vehicles on or around your property, give the Police Department a call. Thank you for all of your continued support. Have a safe and enjoyable summer! Thank you very much for your continued support of our police department, and if we can be of assistance to you, please feel free to contact us at 413-269-0100, (press 6). If we are not in the office, and you need us right away, please call 413-442-0512 (Berkshire County Sheriffs Control). If you have an emergency, please call 911.

Kenneth Packie was awarded First Place in the 9th Annual Husky Cup World Sculpting Championship in Mulda, Germany on May 29, 2012. Ken and his two US teammates (Jeff Samudosky & Tomas Vrba) were invited to compete as Team USA 2 against teams from Europe, Ecuador, USA and a European Womens team. This years sculptures were based on the best-selling historical novel series by author Sabine Ebert. Each teams mission during the five-day competition was to sculpt a life-sized horse and rider depicting twelfth century characters from the novels. Using chainsaws, chisels and fire, Ken and his partners transformed a 25 foot German Oak tree into The Knight, fully clad in chain mail and armor, charging his powerful horse into battle. This was Kens second invitation to The Worlds - in last years competition he placed fourth. Ken is presently in Chetwynd, British Columbia where he will be competing in the 2012 Canadian Carving Championships taking place June 8 through June 10. All prior winners have been invited to compete in this Champion of Champions event. Upon his return home to the Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts, Ken will be speaking at the June 15th Grand Opening of the Stanmeyer Gallery in Otis, Massachusetts. A collection of his realistic wildlife sculptures will be exhibited, along with photographs by world-renown National Geographic photographer John Stanmeyer, in a collaboration entitled Fragile Landscapes. Ken's sculptures have been sought after by private and public collectors throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.

"I am a 3 1/2 year old big orange tabby (or so I have been told) I was adopted from the shelter last fall, after my family moved and could not take me with them. (still miss the kids a lot) It took a few months to settle in with my new folks.....and training them is still a work in progress. They are very good to me and feed me well. (although I pretty much will eat anything) Recently, we moved from the city to this really cool place in the hills. I have windows everywhere to sit in and watch the wildlife outside. Mom and Pops are letting me go out for a short time everyday. I have chased a few chipmunks and squirrels, letting them know who's boss around here. The first time I went out, I got chased by 3 large crows and found out that I could run much faster than I thought....actually, I don't think my paws ever hit the ground. I now stay in my own yard, where I rule. I have a couple of habits that my people find a little annoying...one of which is waking them up at any given time of the night..don't see the problem there, as I am very gentle when I stick my paw in their face and walk around, purring, on top of them. Then, if there is no response, I get up on the bureau and knock a few things onto the floor. Now, THAT"S when I do get a response, but, not really the attention that I am seeking. Hey, I sleep most of the day and I get "itchy paws" at night. I think they should change their schedule, not me. All in all...it's a great life and I love the country living....miss the cellar a little, but, there is a cool loft that I have learned to climb the kitchen wall to get to. Well, that's it for now. I anticipate some much more interesting adventures to share with you next month...til then.. Meow" "Although Miley still had many more adventures to share with readers, shortly after this story was submitted, Miley went missing near our cottage And 12 days later Miley returned, a little thinner, a little worse for wear, but as loving as ever. So happy for her return and the stories she can tell

bloodstream like other fats, but are sent directly to the liver where they are immediately converted into energy, just like carbohydrates, but unlike carbohydrates, these medium chain triglycerides dont raise your blood sugar. Thats a very good thing! Your body uses most of the fat in coconut oil to produce energy, rather than store it around your hips or waist. This is what makes coconut oil better for you than other vegetable oils. Make sure you dont get a hydrogenated version. Hydrogenated oils are not good for you; the process alters the composition of any oil, turning it into an unhealthy oil that raises cholesterol. One study in the International Journal of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders found that the medium chain triglycerides in coconut oil increased fat burning and calorie expenditure in obese men and also led to diminished fat storage. Another study in the same journal found that consumption of coconut oil over the course of 27 days also increased both fat burning and calorie expenditure in women. However these studies were all done on obese people with a very high daily caloric intake, so there isnt a lot of evidence regarding those with a more normal calorie intake. These medium chain triglycerides do, however, induce satiety (fullness)

which most certainly can help anyone looking to lose weight, especially when coconut oil is used in place of other saturated oils like safflower. Some research on coconut oil goes back to the 1980s, when scientists studied the Trobriand Islanders, who consume about 80 percent of their calories from coconut and coconut oil, yet have surprisingly low levels of heart disease and stroke, and are very lean. A study published in the June 2011 issue of Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that coconut oil consumption is associated with higher HDL or "good" cholesterol, but neither raises nor lowers LDL cholesterol. Additional research published in Clinical Biochemistry suggests that coconut oil may protect LDL cholesterol from oxidation, reducing its tendency to accumulate on your arteries. More good news for us Baby Boomers! I find coconut oil quite tasty both in cooking and for spreading on my toast in place of butter. In fact, I do not use butter anymore because I like the taste of the unrefined coconut oil better! Coconut oil can also stand pretty high heat, so I use it for sauting vegetables, and even for scrambling eggs. According to Dr. Mercola, creator of the popular Dr. Mercola health website, coconut oil's medium chain
triglycerides make it the most stable oil to cook with. That means it won't easily turn into trans fatty acids when heated. The Lauric acid found in coconut oil is also added to a wide variety of skin and hair care products, including body and facial cleansers, soap and sunscreens. Clinical research supports the safety of these products in general, and the utility of coconut oil to help moisturize skin in particular. Coconut oil also has high levels of polyphenols, Vitamin A, Vitamin E and significant antioxidant properties. All of these are important for skin health, so it makes sense that the cosmetic industry would add coconut oil to their products. My own experience using it for skin care is that it makes my skin feel very soft and smooth, and has successfully reduced that grandmother skin that appeared on my neck a year or so ago, but I do find that I need to reapply three or more times a day. With the summer sun drying out our skin, its good to know that we can use a safe, healthy product like coconut oil to help keep our Boomer skin looking young and supple! So, enjoy softer skin and and delicious sauted vegetables with this fabulous, healthful oil! Best of Health, Kathi

great information regarding the progress of the high speed internet we all crave. The Community Garden membership, led by Eve Kummel, was out in force getting everyone energized to get outdoors and into the soil. The membership gave out tomato plants & advice to get us all started. Im pretty sure they could always use a hand up at the Otis Poultry Farm. Contact Eve to find out how to join in. They are an extremely nice group & are trying to get the word out on healthy eating from the garden for all! The WIC organization, represented by Jennifer ConnorShumsky, was on location as was the Otis Recreation Department sponsored Berkshire Health Systems Van, headed up by Kim Kelly & her assistant Wendy. These terrific people were educating us about their organizations, services available to members of our community & our individual well being. They gave out water, sunscreen, & lots of information about exercising, even with your pets. For those that were interested, blood pressure screening was available. We really appreciated them joining in. The Otis Rec. Department also sponsored a number of other super fun events including the 2nd annual Zumbathon, which was very well attended. Those people really got a work-out! Led by Bill Dyer and Patricia Richards with the help of Diane Dyer & many others, the Rec. Dept. also sold popcorn & cotton candy, while distributing information about all the fun things to do in Otis. The Rec. Dept. (what would we do without the energy of Patricia Richards?!) also sponsored the Baby/Child Car Seat Check at the fire house as guests of Chief Sandy Pinkham & Asst Chief Ritchie Phair. In addition to hosting SafeKids Western Mass from Baystate Medical Center, our Fire Department not only graciously loaned their tent to the Celebration event but the membership set up & dissembled the tent too! We are so appreciative since our budget didnt allow for a tent and the chairs too! This way everyone who wanted a seat in the shade was able to enjoy that! So a big thank you to the Fire Department! The Police Department, headed up by Chief Roberta Sarnacki, was with us all day. Their affable presence was very reassuring. Besides manning the event, Chief Sarnacki hosted an important Childrens fingerprinting & photo station. Chief Sarnacki reported that she was very pleased with the interest of the parents & kids too! The Farmington River School PTO ran a bake sale; the sale headed up by Stephanie McNair with a lot of help from her friends, including Hillary Howard who baked gluten & nut free goods with orange ganache. There were oodles of school children hawking the goods! We saw Issy McNair & Paige Scott with their friends honing their salesmanship skills! I heard they made out really well. Thank you to all the Seniors, Celebration committee members & others who baked to help the kids raise money. The 4-H Club, headed up by our own Town Clerk Lynn Minerys aunt & uncle the Springstubes, brought out the ever popular Petting Zoo. That group is fantastic & the kids loved it. Thank you so much, we know it is a big effort. The Otis Gazette, as a sponsor of the event along with their loyal advertisers, supplied the commemorative T-Shirts, which were a huge hit. All the volunteers and participants received T-shirts for joining in the fun. Thank you Angelina Dubourg & Tyler McBreairty. The big banners around town advertising Celebration Day were sponsored by Harvest Moon Realty. Our course, the Taste of Otis was fabulous due to the organization of Rowena Sullivan & Lynn Pyenson. The Grouse House, The Farmington River Diner, Papas Healthy Food & Fuel and Other Brother Darryls served up a tantalizing array of dishes & desserts. The Knox Trail Inn hosted the Beer

Garden & wine service. The entertainment was perfect for the day with performances by Cliff Brodeur and the Housatonic Philharmonic. Who could forget their fantastic rendition of the Hokey Pokie! Following Cliff, Gaia Roots, an all-women percussion ensemble rocked the house. It was such a special treat to have these talented performers with us. They were just great. To close the event, our own Dooley Austin band got us out on the dance floor for some smokin country & western swingincluding a rousing rendition of Bruce Mandels terrific bicentennial song, written in honor of Otis! Special thanks, as well to Dooley members for lending their sound equipment for the day. As always, they didnt disappoint and we love them so! The little tykes were invited to a Pajama Party & movie in the Town Hall gym so their parents could enjoy a little adult time under the big tent. Amber Southworth led up the volunteer babysitting patrol. She had those kids rolling with laughter & then managed with her terrific team to settle them down for the movie, Wall-E. Called to action, Pete Adams gave it a try, and Josh Southworth and Bob Rock finally saved the evening when at first we couldnt get the projector to run properly & they were able to solve the problem. Thank you to the guys & gals volunteer babysitters for making the Pajama Party a huge success. I think the parents really enjoyed the opportunity for a night out without the kids, while knowing they were near by & really cared for! Of course, an event like this needs lots of volunteers. Otis didnt let us down and here are some of the people who came through: Jim Higgins, Doug Scott, Kathy & Russ from Greener Leaves Greenhouse,

The Otis Highway department, under the leadership of Chris Bouchard came through with dumpsters, traffic cones & the State Highway lights. Derek Poirier & BJ OBrien helped us a lot too! The Otis maintenance department, under the leadership of Jim Crandall did a knock out job sprucing up town hall for this event. Lisa DOrazio & Heather Venne in the Selectmens office were a huge resource, as was Karen Fink & Margaret McClellan in accounting & treasury. committee & helped us in so many ways during & before the event. The Kiwanis and the Cultural Council supported us both financially & spiritually! Cindy Ragusa has become our photojournalist & we cant wait to see her pix of the day! I know we are missing numerous names, especially of people that just chipped in when needed. We really appreciated all of the assistance, fellowship & good nature from the community attendees, especially when surprisingly being tapped to give a hand. So please accept our genuine thanks for helping out and our sincere apology for leaving you anonymous. Lastly, we would really like to thank the most important guy that completely saved the day. When the generator crashed late in the afternoon, Fire Department member Justin Mairo appeared. He jumped right in to solve the problem which without the power was huge game over! We cant thank him enough. You are a star Justin!! The MVP of this years event! The committee worked diligently to brain storm on event ideas & see the project to fulfillment, within the budget constraints. We welcome any community members that would like to join the Otis Celebration Day Committee. This years Celebration Day event was such a Spectacular day; we are completely energized for planning next years event & are open to all ideas!
.
Best to you all! Fondly, the Otis Celebration Day Committee: Arlene Tolopko, Jane Feldman, Lynn Pyenson, Vicki Ernst, Alba Tutnauer Kathy Adams, Sonia Kobrin, Chair
