M.S. HRMD Adds Global Talent Focus

To address the growing need for HR professionals with competencies in the international area, the M.S. HRMD program is adding a concentration in Global Talent Management. Students will learn more about the new concentration during their spring 2013 academic advisement sessions. "The new Global Talent Management concentration is designed to respond to profound and rapid changes in the increasing global nature of the Human Resources industry and the changing relationship between the organization and its employees," according to department literature. "Students, especially those who work in, or intend to work in, multinational companies, require a new educational paradigm that addresses the new global challenges. Students working toward their M.S. degree in HR can now choose one of four concentrations for their academic focus. In addition to Global Talent Management, the HRMD program will continue to offer concentrations in HR Management, Organizational Effectiveness and HR Development.

Critical thinking skills are among the attributes most highly valued by employers, according to the expert panelists at NYU SHRMs Exploring Careers in Human Resources event. HR Masters Program Spotlight

Q & A with HRMD Director Mila N. Baker, Ph.D.

Dr. Mila Baker is in her first year as the Academic Chair and Director of the Master of Science in Human Resource Management and Development program at NYU-SCPS. She brings an impressive background in education, HR, business and organizational development and effectiveness to the role. Dr. Baker has a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Cincinnati and post-doctoral executive education at MIT Sloan School of Management. Q: Briefly describe your professional background in HR. A: I have worked as an HR professional or a management consultant for the past 25 years in primarily large multinational organizations Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer Inc., Dana Corporation and the World Bank. Ive also worked and/or been a consultant for smaller organizations. Ive held positions from HR Manager to SVP and Chief Human Resource Officer and have held generalist roles as well as specialized roles working with Finance, Sales & Marketing, Information Technology and Supply Chain. My primary focus in recent years has been leadership development and large scale strategic change. Q: What has impressed you so far about the HRMD program at NYU? A: By far the quality of the faculty. They are superb in their knowledge of business and HR, the breadth of their practical experience in a variety of industries and their commitment to students and to the HRMD program. For the most part, the concentrations are strong and reflect the current marketplace. The new Global Talent Management concentration is a good example of our response to the marketplace and business environment. We listened to our corporate partners, our professional organization affiliates, our students as well as trends in HR. Q: Do you have any upcoming plans for the program you can share with us? A: There are a couple of plans that will get underway by Fall 2013. They include: (1) a review and updating of the core curriculum and each of the concentrations; (2) strengthening the program elements most perceived by students, organizations and faculty as the hallmark of the M.S. Human Resource Management & Development program; (3) offering of all classes both onsite and online; (4) expanding the teaching format beyond the case study approach; (5) blending synchronous and asynchronous formats for online course offerings; (6) expanding internships to make them an integral part of the curriculum and practical experience for students. Q: How do organizations benefit when their HR professionals have Master's degrees in HR? A: Organizations are faced with continued competition and the need to excel and be innovative. Achieving this requires a talented cadre of business professionals not only with vast practical experience but with an extensive breadth and depth of knowledge and skills in core business as well as specialization in core human resource functions and organization development/organization effectiveness. A masters level degree provides that breadth and depth of knowledge and skills integrated with opportunities to apply knowledge and skills in practical classroom experiences. The masters degree also affords students the opportunity to be taught and mentored by industry experts. Q: Why should students join SHRM? A: Professional networking is one of the most important elements of their experience in the HRMD program. SHRM is the largest HR networking organization in the world and recognized as one of the premier organizations for HR.

Message from NYU SHRM President, Ileana Leakey

I hope that you have recovered from Hurricane Sandy and are enjoying your classes. Throughout this newsletter, there are stories of HRMD students that received new positions or promotions. I would like to highlight a vital resource for our student body, The Wasserman Center for Career Development at NYU-SCPS. Last year, many students and alumni mentioned that Wasserman Center was geared towards undergraduate students and didnt have services relevant to our student body, but this is no longer true. Since January, Jeanie Liakaris and her team have made great strides from a resume book to job search preparation workshops to corporate presentations. Accenture, Colgate-Palmolive and Nielsen are three of the employers that Wasserman Center NYUSCPS brought to meet HRMD students. You can view job postings and events on NYU CareerNet. Fall Event Highlights: Leveraging Your Graduate Degree Series: The Ins & Outs of Using LinkedIn Resumes for Masters Students Professional Skills Series for International Students I encourage you to leverage The Wasserman Center for Career Development at NYU-SCPS as you navigate through your job search. Business Skills and HR Education Lead Cole to Successful Career Change

Like many of her classmates, Pauline A. Cole was motivated to pursue graduate education in NYU's HRMD program by a desire to change careers. To overcome employers' concerns that she lacked HR experience, Cole sought out, and landed, highquality internships. "Making the transition into HR has had fewer challenges than I anticipated," she said. "Once I was able to secure summer and fall internships, the skills I have gained this past year through my education at NYU and my past work experience have both transferred successfully." Cole was born in Venezuela to parents of Peruvian descent. Due to her fathers job, she lived in several Latin American countries as well as the U.S. prior to college. She has a B.A. in Political Science and Philosophy from Florida Atlantic University and an M.B.A. from Nova Southeastern University. Business Background Cole has worked in business development in both the production and commercial sides of the television business at Sony Pictures Entertainment. An M.S. candidate in Human Resource Management and Development, with a concentration in Organizational Effectiveness, Cole plans to graduate in May 2013. She is an active member of NYU SHRM. Cole credits her business background and the competencies she developed in NYUs HRMD program for easing the transition to HR. "My skills in analysis and strategic abilities have created immense value for the HR roles I have been placed in." she said. Coles first HR internship was at Union Square Hospitality Group, a private midsized company where she worked closely with management on future HR strategies. She also helped increase the value of the company's competency-based performance management platform by improving job descriptions. USHG has kept her on as a consultant. High-Quality Internships Cole currently interns at the United Nations Development Program's Office of Human Resources. "Working at the UNDP this past fall has been an invaluable experience," she said. "I am developing a holistic understanding of key HR processes, especially related to the United Nations and the underlying policies that support them in a multi-country organization." Cole was able to plan an interactive seminar targeted to HR practitioners at the UNDP, as well as analyze workforce metrics and provide input for review. "The project which I will present at the end of my internship tenure will consist of a full standardization of their operating procedures, so that they are more effective and efficient. This process will create a clear alignment to their overall HR strategy," she said. "Both the HR internships I have been able to participate in have really proved to be great learning experiences," Cole added. "I think they have both added superior value and insight for my career goals of working in consulting or in a large consumer products firm.
