SUPERMAN (1938) Superman is a direct result of writer and co-creator Jerry Siegels inability to get girls when he was

a young man. As a high school student, he once explained, I had crushes on several attractive girls who either didnt know I existed or didnt care I existed. It occurred to me: What if I was real terrific? What if I had something special going for me, like jumping over buildings or throwing cars around? Then maybe they would notice me. Siegel and Joe Shuster, the other creator, named their character after movie actors Clark Gable and Kent Taylor, and named his hometown after the Fritz Lang science fiction movie Metropolis. Lois Lane was inspired by a woman named Lois Amster, whom Shuster had a crash on when he was in school. Superman never married Lois Lane -but Shuster, who modelled Clark Kent after himself, eventually married Joanne Carter, the woman he had hired to model for Lois Lane. QUESTIONS 1. NIGHT-CLUB CLOSING TIME The Greek Government has enacted legislation that will radically alter the nocturnal habits of the nation. Despite growing protests, the ruling Socialists have passed a law that enforces a 2p.m. closing time on all night-clubs and prohibits entry to anyone under 17. Any bar, disco or dance-hall which does not respect the new law will be heavily fined. The Socialists say their ambitious clean-up measure will also crack down on alarming rates of crime, alcoholism and drug addiction among the younger generation. Special police units will monitor night-clubs to see theyre not breaking the law. Too many young and drunk people die on our roads. But night-club owners, who accept the age limit but reject the new hours, have threatened to launch a war against it by closing their clubs altogether. The 400.000 of us who work in this field will be ruined if we have to shut so early, said a night-club owner. Greeks never begin their night before 11p.m.
