AIM : To find out pour point for the given furnance oil sample.

APPARATUS : Thermometer, cork, Jacket, Test Jar, Gasket, Cooling

Bath, Disk.

THEORY : Pour Point Definition : The pour point of a liquid is the lowest temperature at
which it becomes semi solid and loses its flow characteristics. In the test for pour point is intended for use on any petroleum oil. Pour point is defined as the lowest temperature, expressed as a multiple of 3C (5F) at which the oil is observed to flow when cooled & examined under prescribed conditions. Significance & Use : The pour point of a petroleum specimen is an index of the lowest temperature of its utility for certain applications and helps in transportation of oils.

PROCEDURE :
1. Pour the oil into the level mark. When necessary, heat the oil in air or water both until it s first sufficiently fluid to pour into the test jar.

2. Close the test for tightly by the cork carrying the high pour thermometer. Adjust the position of the cork & the jar are coaxial & the thermometer bulb is immerged so the beginning of the capillary is 3mm below the surface of the oil. 3. Heat the oil , without stirring, to 46C in a bath maintained at 48C cool the oil to 35C in air or in a water bath at approx. 25C. 4. Place the ring gasket around the test jar. Insert the test jar in the jacket. 5. Beginning at a temperature 11C above the expected pour point at each test thermometer reading that is a multiple of 3C, remove the test jar from jacket carefully & tilt it first enough to ascertain whether there is movement of oil in the test jar. 6. Continue the test in this manner until a point is reached at which the oil in the test jar shows no movement when the test jar is held in a horizontal position for exactly 5 seconds. 7. Record the observed reading of the test thermometer.

RESULT :
The pour point of the given furnace oil is 15C

PRECAUTION :
1. Never place the cold test jar directly in the cooling medium. 2. The complete operation of removal & the replacement of the test jar shall require not more than 3 seconds. 3. For determination of pour point below 10C, two or more baths are required.

PRECISION :
Result of duplicate tests should not differ by more than the following amounts: Repeatability - 3C (or 5F) Reproducibility - 6C (or 10F)
