Ingram English 1103 Section 029 24 September 2012 The Effects of Cultural Experiences: An Annotated Bibliography Helman, Cecil. Culture, Health, and Illness. New York: Arnold, 2001. Print Helmans book is most interested in global health. It is not about specific cultures, but the role culture plays in different kinds of health. He talks about positive and negative effects, both mental and physical. Anthropology is what Helman explains the most. The ways anthropology has a role in health all over the world seems to be his main interest. This is a great resource for finding out more about anthropology, a subject I know nothing about. I can benefit from discovering more about how humans work, most specifically in different cultures. It will also be great to see direct benefits and problems caused by cultures and their customs. Loewenthal , Kate Miriam. Religion, Culture and Mental Health. New York: Cambridge University Press, 2007. Print. Loewenthal focuses on the mental health effects of different cultural and religious beliefs. The book focuses on how cultural and religious customs affect peoples mental state. It defines the psychological effects, describes the symptoms, and explains the causes. This would be a good way to better understand how different cultures act psychologically. It would show the ways in which experiencing another culture could directly affect someone.

Understanding the ways in which cultural and religious customs influence people within the culture would explain how those experiencing it might react. MacLachlan, Malcolm. Culture and Health: A Critical Perspective Towards Global Health. New Jersey: John Wiley & Sons, 2006. Print. MacLachlan takes a different direction by showcasing the effects of physical and mental health in various cultures. He focuses more on general health in cultures and the differences among each culture. He also goes into increasing health throughout the world. Throughout the book he speaks about not just how mental and physical health are affected by cultural differences, but also about improving that health. He calls for being sensitive towards cultures. In order to improve health in a different culture, one must both understand the culture and be sensitive toward it. This will be a good resource to find out more about the physical effects caused by different cultural customs. It will also show ways that global health improvements may be achieved. The book gives a good perspective on how to look at different cultures and why we should try to improve health everywhere.
