3-Sided Assignment My inquiry question is Can stress be healthy in college student? I am exploring my topic from three different groups that have their own perspectives of stress. Who can discuss stress better than people that are in the most stressful time of their lives? College students. In one survey of college students, stress was identified as the top heath concern (Teague). Common sources of stress include academic work, exams and grades, sleep deprivation, worries about money, relationship concerns, and uncertainty about their futures (Weaver). College students adapt habits to deal with stress that are ineffective and unhealthy. Students gear towards the use of tobacco, alcohol, drugs, and food to manage feelings. Other approaches to stress management popular with college students are listening to music, socializing with friends, going to movies, and reading. Others may argue that college students have more advantages than those who don't or can't attend a university; but that shouldn't lessen the stress experienced by students (Reifman). Many groups such as S.T.A.R (Stress and Anxiety Research Society), CFR (The Center of Research On Families), and MNRS (Midwest Nursing Research Society) are organizations of researchers who share an interest in problems of stress, coping, and anxiety. Its members meet annually to exchange research findings and clinical

applications on a wide range of stress and anxiety related phenomena. The viewpoint of this group is that stress is only bad for you in large and overwhelming portions. This group covers the good type of stress and the bad type of stress and ways to cope with it. Chronic stress is very serious and can lead to a weakened immune system, ulcers, and high blood pressure. Acute stress is less serious and is the most common. Acute stress is thrilling and exciting in small doses but too much is exhausting. This group researches the pros and cons of stress which makes them neutral on this topic. Another group involved in the academic conversation of stress would be psychologist. Psychologists study the mental process and human behavior by observing, interpreting, and recording how people relate to one another and the environment. The APA (American Psychological Association) is the is the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States One of the topics psychologists do research on and study is the effects of stress. Psychologist view stress as something not just in your head. (Whole Living) Stress is the body's reaction to something that exceeds its resources. When we perceive something as harmful, our brain triggers hormones such as cortisol, which flood the body and contribute to various physical responses. says Cohen a psychologist at the University of California, San Francisco.
