Connor, Dan. "Is Yoga Sinful?." catholicdigest. (2012): n. page. Print. <http://www.catholicdigest.com/articles/newsletter/no_sub_ministry/2011/06-01/is-yogasinful>. Connors article tries to get to the bottom of the debate on whether practicing yoga is a sin or not. The article begins with an anecdote from Connor explaining how he came up with the idea to write about yoga and sinning. He claims that he himself is indifferent on the topic, but wants to explore it to just beware of the Catholics views. Since he does write for a Catholic magazine, he does not want to write anything that would go against the Catholic religion. Connor goes on to discuss bloggers ideas on the topic stating that doing yoga opens up ones soul to demons. This article is completely based on peoples thoughts, as Connors does not cite any creditable sources.

Toward the end of the article the authors lets the reader know that maybe some Catholics are unaware that doing yoga is really a sin. He says the New Age is making many people conflict with the old ways of Catholicism. They a times blur what they see everywhere with what they have been taught within their religion. Yoga has become very popular and

a lot of people just do it because they think it will help them mentally or physically. Most people who practice yoga do not really know the true history behind it. So it is fair to say that some people may be ignorant to what yoga can or cannot do. Connor ends the article by saying that the Vatican would not have a problem with yoga if it was just stretches, but since yoga comes with other mythologies they cannot accept it.

I thought this article was very interesting, and allowed me to see yoga in a negative light. I have only seen yoga as something good that can help enrich the body, but now I see that it may not be as good as everyone say. Although I am Baptize and the topic of yoga has not been an issue in my religious group (that I am aware of) I do see the points. I am not saying the Vatican is right, but this article did give me a lot to think about.

Corliss, Richard. "The Power Of Yoga." Time Health . 15 Apr 2001: 1. Web. 20 Sep. 2012. <http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,106356,00.html>.

Corliss article offers a new look into the world of yoga. Corliss starts his article off with statistics and facts on how yoga has evolved over the past 5,000 years. He goes on to say yoga has become a somewhat of a fad; therefore making yoga as prevalent as it is today. The author allows the reader to see that everyone does yoga from celebrities to Supreme Court judges. This tactful use of statistics offers the reader the idea that yoga must be doing something for the body, or so many people would not be doing it. After getting the reader to see that maybe yoga is something they should try Corliss goes on to tell the reader the good yoga can do. The article gives examples on how yoga has

helped people get over caner, lose weight, and save relationships. After he tells the reader what good yoga can do he begins to play devils advocate, and tells the reader the proof of all these miracles are only based on anecdotes. There is no true scientific proof that yoga has any meaning or power at all. Corliss ends his article on humors note telling the reader that yoga has transformed from its original meaning-in ancient India-to something people do just because celebrities do it. After reading this article I have come up with some good inquiry ideas. In the articles Corliss brings up a lot of interesting ideas on yoga and the affect it can have on people. The article made me think about how all these people say yoga has changed their lives, and since they say yoga can change someones mental, physical, and spiritual health could it be considered a science. People say it can bring scientific results so in reality would it be fair to think of yoga as a branch of science?

"General Yoga Information." www.americanyogaassociation.org. americanyogaassociation, n.d. Web. 24 Sep 2012. <http://www.americanyogaassociation.org/general.html>.

This webpage gives new yoga participants a little background on what yoga really is. Here anyone can read about the different types of yoga and the benefits they can have on ones body. Also the reader can get a history lesson on what yoga really is. On the webpage the American Yoga Association lets people know that yoga is not a religion because they are not worshiping a God or God like figure. They also state that although many people think that yoga is a part Hinduism, it really predates Hinduism. The AGA also says that the teachings of yoga have been passed down from teacher to student. If it

were not for this cycle we would have not known about yoga. The webpage continues to inform the reader of yoga and its history. The document ends with the reader telling anyone they can get started doing yoga just by getting a video tape or finding a teacher.

I though this document was very interesting because it provided basic facts on yoga. Since I have decided to do a paper on yoga I thought that I at least should know some basic history. Although this webpage did not give me as much background information as I wanted, it did inform me. Most people do yoga everyday and do not know how it got to the fancy studio they are learning it out of. Knowing just a little bit of information enables me to understand the methods and teachings of yoga.

Kempton, Sally. "Who Do You Think You Are? ." yogajournal. 2 may 2011: n. page. Web. 20 Sep. 2012. <http://www.yogajournal.com/wisdom/2616>.

In this article the Kempton shows the reader how yoga can help one mentally. This article starts off with a story about this women Lauran who broke her ankle while teaching a yoga class. When she went to the doctor they told her to stay of her feet. She was very upset because she made her money teaching yoga. Kempton tells this story to show the reader that because Lauren already knew who she was it was okay that she had to step out of her element and find another job she loved. She goes on to say that know that Lauren has hurt herself she has to think about Avidya. According to Kempton this is when one has no knowledge of who they are and cannot fully connect with the universe. This article is filled with stories about people and how they have overcome certain things just

because they are comfortable with whom they are. Once people have become aware of who they are they have reached vidya( knowing). Kempton ends the article by letting the reader know that although Avidya is deep in our conscious we can change it and become fully aware of who we are and one with the universe.

I thought this article was important because it allowed me to see how yoga can really affect peoples mind sets. The author of this article does yoga so she really believes that if you are ok with whom you are then life can throw anything at you and you will be ok. I am not too sure if I really believe in that philosophy, but I am sure if I did yoga all the time I would. After reading this article I would love to do yoga and see if I can see the world as positive as Kempton does.

Rajghatta, Chidanand . "Americans twist yoga out of shape." Times of India . 29 May 2003: n. page. Web. 20 Sep. 2012. In this article Chidanand tells the reader how Americans have taken yoga and completely change it. Chidanand engaged the reader right of the back my presenting a cartoon making fun of all the different types of yoga we have in America, from hot yoga to lite yoga. The author use of a sarcastic tone allows the reader to see just how ridiculous Americans have made yoga. Yoga use to be a sacred art the ancient Indians did, but now people can learn this art just about anywhere. He also goes on to express to the reader that American have now used yoga as a marking strategy. They now have stores dictated to yoga products. They sell specialized yoga mats, teas, and yoga accessories. They also have magazines that talk just about yoga. Chidanand ends the article off with the last

obscure way American have changed yoga: having notional association just for yoga such as colleges. After reading this article I found it very informative. I was, and am still not, familiar with ancient yoga. I only know the yoga I see on T.V and hear about. Before reading this article I thought this was normal and that yoga was just something people did to relieve stress. Chidanand found away to show me just how ridiculous American have made yoga. yoga words." www.yogamovement.com. The Roberts Gruop , n.d. Web. 24 Sep 2012. <http://www.yogamovement.com/resources/glossary.html>. In this webpage The Robert group has taken the time to define all the words people use while doing yoga. On the page you can look up any word that one would here in a yoga class. One can now be informed of common terms such as Aum, Duru, Ashram, and Buddhi. They also notify readers of the different types of not just yoga, but paths one could take from Jnana yoga path to Karma yoga path. The webpage is filled with definitions of terms that can allow the reader to understand key expressions while enjoying yoga. I thought this article was very interesting and allowed me to understand some of the words they use in yoga. Some sources are debatable and just tell people what they think, but I also think it is important to have some sources that tell the reader true facts. This source enables me to learn new terms I did not know. This new knowledge will be a great asset to my paper.
