Today Now Route 66 is a historical site because after WWII it could not handle the traffic. The Federal- Aid Highway Act of 1956 signed by Eisenhower enabled the construction of a new highway which made Route 66 less popular and caused it to fall out of use. So the National Historic Route 66 Federation has preserved Route 66.

Where/ What

Route 66
Cyrus Avery and John Woodruff created this Super Highway with the idea of connecting Chicago to Los Angeles and to bring industries from the east to the west. The Federal Aid Highway Act of 1921 allowed this highway to be built but it was not finished until 1926. At first Route 66 was only used by truckers, who wanted to travel the shortest distance, and farmer in search of better land and market. When the great depression hit it helped about 210,000 people escape the Dust Bowl and it allowed relocation to California after World War Two. It became the symbol of personal survival, hope, opportunities, economic recovery, freedom and stability.

The creation of this highway helped the economy, because many shops, gas stations, and stares were built on the sides of the road; also many communities were connected. The production of automobiles increased along with the demand because travel was easier. From 1910 to 1920 there were 180,000 to 17,000,000 cars.

Route 66 (also called Main Street of America, the Mother Road or Will Rogers Highway) was one of the first U.S highways. This Highway connected 9 states as well as Chicago to Santa Monica with many rural and urban cities/ towns between.

o This road defined road culture; highways were modeled after this one for a long time. o Songs like get your licks on route 66 (1946), movies including cars, Forest Gump, Rain Man, The Perfect Age Of Rock and Roll and TV shows like Breaking Bad included route 66.

This Road changed America.
