Monday: Literacy Block Schedule

Block Language & Word Study (15 minutes) Reading Workshop (55 minutes) Time/Activity 9:00 am 9:15 am Interactive Read Aloud 9:15 am 9:25 am Reading Mini-Lesson 9:25 am 9:50 am Independent Reading/Guiding Reading Teachers Role Read to students pausing for comments and making discussion. Teacher teaches a mini lesson on an aspect of reading. While students read independently the teacher is conducting guided reading with a small group for 15 minutes. The remaining time teacher is conferring informally with students. Observe and listen to individual groups, do not direct groups. Teacher gives a mini lesson based on what the students need. Teacher asks students where they are in their writing and marks it down on a check sheet to keep students on task. Students work individually and silently on their own writing. Invite students to share and evaluate how their personal reading/writing is going. Students Role Students listen to teacher, make comments and discuss. Students learn from a mini lesson some aspect of reading. Students read silently or with others in a group

Writing Workshop (50 minutes)

Students gather in heterogeneous groups to discuss quality literature. Students learn from a mini lesson based on their needs. Students say whether they are planning, publishing, writing, editing. (Students may call a conference.) Teacher confers with individual students.

Read to students pausing for comments and making discussion. Teacher asks students where they are in their reading and marks it down on a check sheet to keep students on task. Teacher teaches a mini lesson on an aspect of reading. While students read independently the teacher is conducting guided reading with a small group for 15 minutes. The remaining time teacher is conferring informally with students. Students learn from a mini lesson based on their needs. Students work individually and silently on their own writing. Invite students to share and evaluate how their personal reading/writing is going. Students Role Students correct sentences looking for grammar errors, etc. Students listen to teacher, make comments and discuss. Students report personal progress: book title, page #, and report goal for the day. (Students may call a conference) Students learn from a mini lesson some aspect of reading. Students read silently or with others in a group
