Knownsymptomsoftheageingeyearewellknownandincludetheneedformorelight,thedifficultyfocusing whilereadingbooks,labelsorwatchingTV.Allofthesesymptomsarenormaltotheageingeye.Ageingeye diseasessuchasmaculardegeneration,glaucomaandcataractscompoundtheseproblems. Whatisnotnormal,iswhatwedoaboutagedcarelightingtohelpalleviatethesedifficulties.Oftenlightingis simplynotbrightenough.Itmaybebrightenoughfortheyoungadult,butnotfortheover50s.Research indicatesthatforevery10yearsthelightingbrightnessneedstoincreasebyupto2.5timesi.Furtherresearch suggests1000luxispreferredii.NotetheAustralianStandardforcommonareasisonly160lux.Fortheageing eyeasixfoldincreaseisrequired.Butitisnotjustthephysicalandnoticeabledegradationoftheeye;there arealsothepsychologicaleffects.Oursenseofwellbeingandourconfidencelevelsarelikelytodeclineand ouranxietylevelsincreasewhenwearenotseeingwell.
