Mild weather added to a
large turnout for the 17th an-
nual Holiday Parade of
Lights and the second annual
Holiday in the Park. The pa-
rade down New Pragues
Main Street ended at Memo-
rial Park with a variety of
festivities.
"I thought it was fantastic,"
said Kristy Mach, executive
director of the New Prague
Chamber of Commerce, or-
ganizer of the event.
There were about 13 units
in the parade that went east
on Main Street. Various orga-
nizations participated from
businesses to clubs. Mach
said this year there were no
prizes for the best floats. One
difference was that as the pa-
rade neared Memorial Park,
the crowds lining the streets
grew in number.
"I was surprised to see so
many people at Memorial
Park," said Mach.
This year the Holiday in
the Park included activities
from last year and new ones.
There was the Reindeer Dash
where children 10 and under
lined up in one of the ball-
parks to scramble to grab a
goodie bag. Mach said there
were 500 bags that contained
various items, spread out in
the outfield.
"I think everyone got one,
because they were all gone,"
said Mach.
During the dash children
were asked to share if they
saw someone without a bag.
Other events included vis-
its with Santa, carols by the
New Prague choir Hymnus
and a tree lighting ceremony.
Santa lit the pine tree sprin-
kled with 5,500 LED lights
that will remain lit through
the Holidays. Mach said the
local Boy Scouts were gener-
ous by providing three small
bonfires in portable fire pits.
Closing the night were
fireworks by RES Specialty
Pyrotechnics. People told
Mach they enjoyed being
able to see a terrific fire-
works show up close.
"People thought it was a
great night," said Mach.

Concert puts audience in festive mood
The New Prague High School show Choir, Emotion, performed at the New Prague Christmas Concert Sunday, Dec.
2, at St. Wenceslaus Church. Other groups included the New Prague Community Band, the Hymnus choir, groups
from St. Wenceslaus School and Raven Stream Elementary and the Hurt family. The finale featured the audience

the same church where he
married his high school
sweetheart just 13 months
earlier.
Means, a 2007 graduate of
New Prague High School,
was killed
November 18
when the vehi-
cle he was rid-
ing in hit a
roadside bomb

The funeral
p r o c e s s i o n
began at
Bruzek Funer-
al Home and went east on
Main Street (Highway
13/19), and the route was
lined not only with 1,800
American Flags, courtesy of
Larry Eckhardt of Little
York, IL, but with hundreds
of people who took a break
from their daily routine to
give the Marine a proper
sendoff. Those lining the
sidewalks included people of
all ages, from young children
to retired people. Several
classes from St. Wenceslaus
School walked the six blocks
from school to pay their re-
spects to a fallen hero.
One woman, Jodi Hunt,
walked up to the group and
passed out small American
Flags to the children. Helen
Tikalsky, who is the mother
of three veterans, talked
about the emotions she felt as
her voice broke with emo-
tion.
The procession followed
Highway 13 east and north.
At the roundabout at Scott
County Road 2, two sheriffs
cars blocked crossing traffic
and two deputies as well as a
man in a Marine Uniform
stood in the circle and saluted
as the procession went by.
Dozens of cars were stopped
and passengers got out and

Diabetes awareness: Becoming a healthier type
Approximately 25.8 million
people in the United States
have been diagnosed with
diabetes and 7 million remain
undiagnosed, according to the
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC). Diabetes is
a chronic disease that costs our
nation thousands of lives each
year, making it increasingly
important for everyone to gain
greater awareness about
prevention and management.
1. What is diabetes?
Diabetes is caused by
insuffcient production of, or
resistance to, a hormone called
insulin. There are several types
of diabetes, all of which are a
result of blood sugar (glucose)
levels being excessively high.
Type 1 diabetes is usually
diagnosed in children and
young adults and was
formerly referred to as
juvenile diabetes. Type 1
is caused by the body not
producing any insulin.
Type 2 diabetes is the most
common form of diabetes
and affects millions of
Americans both diagnosed
and undiagnosed. In the
case of type 2 diabetes,
the body either doesnt
produce enough insulin
or resists its effects. Obesity
plays a major role in
developing insulin
resistance, which can
lead to type 2 diabetes.
Gestational diabetes may
occur during the latter half
of pregnancy in women
that did not previously
have diabetes. Its
important to monitor blood
sugar levels throughout
the pregnancy to keep the
mother and child healthy.
Prediabetes is a condition
where blood sugar levels
are abnormally high, but
not high enough to be
classifed as type 2 diabetes.
Individuals diagnosed with
prediabetes are more likely
to develop type 2 diabetes,
so it should be proactively
addressed through weight
loss efforts and moderate
exercise.
2. What are symptoms
of diabetes?
Prediabetes often has no
obvious signs. However,
common symptoms of other
forms of diabetes include:
Frequent urination.
Excessive hunger
and/or thirst.
Fatigue.
Unusual weight loss.
Additional signs of type 2
diabetes include:
Blurred vision.
Frequent and recurring
infections.
Tingling and numbness
in the hands and feet.
Slow healing cuts
or bruises.
However, not all type 2
diabetics experience symptoms.
If you have any concerns or
questions about diabetes, it`s
important to speak with your
health care provider.
3. How serious is the impact
of diabetes?
Diabetes is the seventh
leading cause of death in the
U.S., accounting for 70,000
lives lost in 2009, per the CDC.
Diabetes also presents the
potential for many long-term
complications, including
increased risk of damage to the
eyes, feet and kidneys, as well
as heart disease and stroke.
4. How can I manage and
prevent diabetes?
Its critical to maintain
a healthy diet that includes
dietary fber from whole grains,
fruits, vegetables, nuts and
seeds. Also, limit the intake of
saturated fats and high glycemic
foods such as pastas, potatoes,
sugar-flled snacks, soda and
white bread.
Moderately exercising 30
minutes a day, fve days per
week is essential for diabetes
prevention and management.
Diabetes is a chronic disease,
but it doesnt have to place
a continuous burden on your
health. With a few lifestyle
changes and added awareness,
you`re sure to make signifcant
steps toward becoming a
healthier type.

European Christmas provides a world of fun

People attending the Third
Annual European Christmas
Boutique could almost say
they traveled around the
world without leaving New
Prague.
The event, held Sunday,
Dec. 2, at the American Le-
gion Park Ballroom, included
entertainment and vendors
representing various coun-
tries.
There was dancing, stories
and representatives of culture
from the Czech Republic,
Ireland, Poland, Germany,
Norway, Sweden and others.
Locally people came from
New Prague, Montgomery,
Lonsdale, Shakopee and the
Twin Cities Metro Area. The
European Christmas event
was sponsored by State Bank
of New Prague and hosted by
the Czech Heritage Club.
A highlight was the coro-
nation of the 2013 Czech
Heritage Junior Royalty.
They were: Michaela Goettl,
daughter of John and Colleen
Goettl, Katrina Reeder,
daughter of Jim and Mindy
Reeder, Sarah Stresnak,
daughter of Ken and Patty
Stresnak and Madeline Clara
Svoboda, daughter of Craig
and Maryann Svoboda. Ac-
companying them to events
will be 2013 Little Sister
Grace Tumasmith, daughter
of Chris and Maryann Tuma-
smith and Little Brother Joe
Jirik, son of Duane and Amy
Jirik. The six will represent
the area at parades and festi-
vals over the next year.
Outgoing 2012 Ambas-
sadors Tatum Kubes, Izak
Jirik, Grace Kubista and
Nathan Palma remarked how
the last year had helped them
learn more about their Czech
heritage, its traditions and be
role models. For them one of
the best moments of the year
was attending the reopening
of the National Czech & Slo-
vak Museum & Library in
Cedar Rapids, IA. About four
years ago a flood damaged
the museum.

Truth in
Taxation
hearing
draws one

The New Prague City
Councils Truth in Taxation
Public Hearing for the 2013
budget drew one person.
Council member-elect Pat
Scripture attended the Mon-
day, Dec. 3, meeting.
A former city employee,
she asked if the subsidy that
the city pays to the New
Prague Golf Club would be
going down.
The city has been paying a
$121,270 subsidy to help the
club with debt services and
cash flow. The council ap-
proved the subsidy to help
the golf club rather than have
it close.
City Administrator Mike
Johnson said while the club
has been making progress in
closing the gap over the last
few years, the subsidy cant
go down until the club can
cover its expenses.
Council member Shawn
Ryan asked if Scripture had
any ideas. She thought man-
agement was doing a good
job and they could take over
the jobs at the club.
Mayor Chuck Nickolay
said they could, but in the
long run it would likely cost
more. He noted "your jaw
would drop" with what other
golf management companies
charge.
Council member Kristin
Guerrette said the city has
been working on a plan
where the subsidy payment
would go down, which in-
cluded looking at other areas
where the club could make
money. She noted theres a
lot more competition in the
area.
"Its not an easy industry,"
said Nickolay. The city and
the club have to look at more
options at making revenue
from non-golfing events.

When the worst
happens, we
witness the best
To the Editor:
This past week we once
again witnessed a life
tragedy that causes one to
question faith, purpose, and
reasoning.
Though questions like that
remain mostly unanswered in
the death of a young man,
who paid the ultimate sacri-
fice, we also witnessed mo-
ments of tremendous inspira-
tion during this communitys
response.
At a time when the very
worst happened, people
came out to show support
and help a devastated family
in grief. Total strangers both
from this community and
much further afield offered
help whether it was with
food, monetary donations,
getting a video feed into the
social hall at church, or their
presence. Fifty volunteers
from the Patriot Guard stood
guard in the cold with never
a complaint, only kindness
and compassion, most of
them having no personal
connection to either the fam-
ily or the community. The
Marine contingent assigned
to Dale and his family were
compassionate, caring young
men.
The call went out to help
erect and take down the flags
that lined the funeral route
and, on very short notice and
cold days, over twice as
many people as needed as-
sembled to complete the
task.
Law enforcement officers,
veterans, and Gold Star
Mothers from all over the
area came to offer support.
Individuals called and came
out to offer anything that
could be used to help in this
time of need.
When the worst happens,
we witness the best in the
people of this community,
who respond with compas-
sion and selflessness. We
have seen this empathetic
spirit time and time again in
this community when others
have experienced heartache
and tragedy. We are truly
blessed and humbled to work
inand be part of the New
Prague community.

an icon
To the Editor:
New Prague and Minneso-
ta community journalism has
lost an icon.
With the recent passing of
Lois Suel Wann, editor and
editor emeritus of the New
Prague Times for decades,
we are diminished.
My wife, Ann, and I have
had our lives intertwined
with those of Lois and her
family for much of our time
here. Ann (Suel) grew up in
the local newspaper busi-
ness. Her father, Jay Suel,
grandparents James (Len)
and Ellie Suel, Lois and
Arthur J. Suel, and later
Chuck and Art Wann, con-
trolled and contributed to
local newspaper history for
much of the last century,
leading up to the present
time.
Anns childhood memories
are solidly based on her rela-
tionship with The Times. She
worked there as a youngster,
then pursued a journalism
degree before working local-
ly and with several other area
newspapers as a writer and
advertising specialist.
I began my journalism ca-
reer in New Prague in 1974,
and spent most of the next
decade working side-by-side
with Lois and our co-work-
ers. When Ann and I were
married in 1978, our first res-
idence was a home owned by
Lois and Gene Wann.
Ann and I will remember
Lois as a woman of dignity,
sincerity and compassion.
She truly loved this commu-
nity, her newspaper family
and the people whose lives
were chronicled in The
Times. She was from the
old school of journalism,
where honesty and truth
trumped the more sensational
headlines and content of this
era. Lois learned the art and
science of weekly journalism
from her father and passed
the torch to those who fol-
lowed.
Ann and I will remember
Lois with tenderness and re-
spect. Sadly, we will not see
another like her in Minnesota
weekly journalism.

A proper sendoff
Last week in this space, we included a
poem about the proper way to remember
the sacrifice that Lance Corporal Dale
Means and his family made for his coun-
try. That editorial was written and that
newspaper went to press just hours be-
fore the Marines funeral.
In the aftermath of all the emotion that
the funeral brought, there was a common
theme. That somehow, New Prague
managed to find the right way to show
its love and respect for one of its own.
The turnout on Tuesday when about
100 people, twice as many as needed,
showed up to volunteer and place flags
along the funeral procession route, was
very impressive, and the hundreds of
people lining the streets at the time of
the procession also sent a strong show of
support for the family of Dale Means.
A server at a local restaurant said a
crew from one of the Twin Cities televi-
sion stations stopped by after the funer-
al. The reporter told her that he had cov-
ered many military funerals, but had
never seen a community come together
to show their support like New Prague
did.
The most striking image, aside from
the coffin going into and out of the
church, was of the flags lining the road-
side, both in New Prague and on Old
Highway 13 Boulevard, going into St.
Patrick. There, the narrow country road
going uphill, with two rows of flags lin-
ing the road and St. Patrick Church at
the top of the hill, made for a striking
image.
As I said to more than one person that
day, the flags were absolutely beautiful.
But I hope I never see them lining the
streets of my town again. Or any other
town for that matter. At least, not under
these circumstances.

My grandma, Lois Suel
Wann, died November 19 at
the age of 90.
She was a wonderful
grandma, and a wonderful
great-grandma to my girls.
And, shes the reason I
have printers ink in my
veins.
She, too, was a writer.
She earned her English de-
gree at the College of St.
Catherine (and met her fu-
ture husband, my grandpa,
St. Thomas student Eugene
Wann, while at college).
Her love of printers ink
came from her father, Arthur
J. Suel. She followed in his
footsteps to become the edi-
tor of The New Prague
Times, a role she held for
many years, during a time
when men dominated the
newspaper business.
One of my favorite stories
is how she demanded to be
included in the annual Le
Sueur County Newspapers
meeting, which had been an
all-male event--and more of a
social gathering than busi-
ness meeting from what I un-
derstand. My grandma even-
tually won her spot at the
meeting and proudly attend-
ed the annual meeting for
many years.
In 2004, I attended my first
Le Sueur County Newspa-
pers meeting. A handful of
the many women who are ac-
tively working for our coun-
tys newspapers were in at-
tendance. One led the meet-
ing. How far we have come
in such a relatively short
time, thanks to women--like
my grandma--who demanded
places at meetings.
As I write this--my own
column--my thoughts take
me back to my grade school
years when I would walk
down to The New Prague
Times office after school. I
would sit by her desk and
visit with her about my day
and any interesting news
brewing in the community.
Then, I would watch her type
her column: So Lo Notes.
Often times, her columns
included stories about her
family life--including her
two sons and grandchildren.
Slices of family vacations,
birthdays, and anniversaries
were shared with readers.
Growing up, I sometimes
thought it was odd that
strangers knew about our
family adventures, but now,
as a columnist and a mom, I
get it.
If Im not working, Im
with my family. Those are
the two things I do. My girls,
Anna and Ellen, and my hus-
band, John, are my first
thoughts in the morning and
my last at night. So, when I
sit down at my computer to
write something non-news,
my family is the first to fill
my column space.
As a working mother dur-
ing a time most mothers
stayed home, I can only
imagine my grandmas joy in
sharing her familys adven-
tures... another dimension of
herself.
I was at my desk on Mon-
day morning, November 19th
when my dad called to let me
know Grandma had passed.
It wasnt surprising news.
She hadnt been well for a
week or so.
But... its never easy.
Tears and a prayer.
I was in the middle of writ-
ing the Waterville City Coun-
cil story. How many commu-
nity news stories, like this
one, had my grandma written
in her days? How similar--
yet so different--roles we
have played in life...
Adesk full of papers--vari-
ous news items, meeting
times, photos to be scanned,
event reminders, and adver-
tisements waiting to be creat-
ed--and a 10 a.m. photo/in-
terview didnt allow for the
cry I craved.
I stepped outside for
awhile, then, did what I know
my grandma would have
done.
I wrote the news.
My grandma was a classy,
fun, kind, and wonderful per-
son, who was always saving
stray animals (of all vari-
eties), making family Christ-
mas Eve celebrations special,
offering refreshments and
snacks, and taking pictures.
Always taking pictures.
And visiting.
A chat over a glass of soda
and a cookie with Grandma
always made the day better.
Im grateful to have had
such amazing grandparents.
They were constant, loving
role models in my life, and
now, that they are gone, I
know my role.
I will continue to share
their values, stories, and pho-
tos--our family history--with
my girls.
And, I will write.
After all, its in my blood.
Thanks, Grandma.

A. Kukacka, 66, of Heidel-
berg, died Thursday, Nov. 29,
2012, at The Lodge on
Natchez in Elko New Mar-
ket.
Mary was born on January
17, 1946, in St. Peter, a
daughter of Martin and
Brigid (Lynch) Burger. She
grew up in the Henderson
area and graduated from
Henderson High School.
She is survived by her life
partner Joel Kukacka, Hei-
delberg; children Cindy An-
derson, Blaine, Kenny (Kim)
Burger, Farmington, Mickey
Burger (and Russell Nach-
reiner), St. Peter, and Louie
Kukacka, Heidelberg; four
grandchildren; and siblings
Joan (Dennis) Peka, Mont-
gomery, AL, Mike (Brenda)
Burger, Mankato, Marty
(Char) Burger, Northfield,
Jim Burger, Maple Grove,
Janet Burger, Northfield,

Richard Rick Lockert,
68, of Jordan, died Wed-
nesday, Nov. 28, 2012.
Rick was
born in Lem-
mon, SD, on
February 19,
1944, a son of
B e r n i c e
Hauge. He
grew up on a
small ranch
near Bison, SD and attended
grades 1-8 in a one-room
school. He and his mother
then moved to Lemmon so
he could attend high school.
They lived with his grand-
parents, Esther and Alfred
Hauge. Following high
school, Rick enlisted in the
U.S. Navy, where he served
from 1962-1965. He served
in the Pacific on the USS
Piedmont and attained the
rank of Petty Officer 3rd
Class. After honorable dis-
charge from the Navy, Rick
married Jacqueline Mensing
and moved to Brookings,
SD. He received his Bache-
lor's Degree in Animal Sci-
ence and Business at South
Dakota State University. He
worked in various jobs and
locations over the years, in-
cluding Federal Land Bank,
Assistant to the Dean of Res-
ident Instruction at SDSU
while obtaining his Master's
Degree in Plant Science,
Trust Officer of the First
Northwest Trust Company,
owner and operator of a
mens apparel store, Ag-
ricultural Loan Officer, vice
president of a consulting
firm, and manager of a loans
department. He moved to
Jordan in 1988 and worked
in banking. In 1999, Rick
was hired as vice president of
what is now HomeTown
Bank, where he worked until
his retirement last month.
Rick was awarded the Dis-
tinguished Service Award
given annually by the Jordan
Jaycees and Commercial
Club. He was also a member
of the Heimatfest Commit-
tee, the Commercial Club,
Jordan Area Chamber of
Commerce, and the Jordan
Art Festival. He was an in-
structor of Religious Edu-
cation for 40 years and he
also liked to spend time at
the Jordan Mini Met working
the concession stand. Rick
enjoyed each transition in
life, but most importantly,
loved to spend time with his
kids and grandkids. Rodeos
were a big interest in his life,
he was a loyal fan and sup-
porter of Jordan Baseball, the
SDSU Jackrabbits, and the
Minnesota Twins.
He is survived by children
Mike (Sarah) Lockert, Hel-
ena, AL, Karri Beath, An-
keny, IA, and Rebecca (John)
Ringsmuth, Jordan; his close
friend Nancy Busch, Shak-
opee; grandchildren Olivia
and Nick Lockert, Connor
and Claire Beath, James and
Maria Ringsmuth; Jacqueline
Mensing Lockert (mother of
Mike, Karri, and Rebecca);
and many other relatives and
friends.
He was preceded in death
by his mother; infant son
Stephen Troy Lockert; and
infant grandson Joseph
Richard Lockert.

was held Monday Dec. 3, at
11 a.m., at St. John the Bap-
tist Catholic Church in Jor-
dan.
Interment was at Calvary
Cemetery in Jordan, with
military honors by the Jordan
Vets Honor Guard. Pall-

64, of Belle Plaine, formerly
of New Prague, died Friday,
Nov. 30, 2012,
at the Abbott
Northwestern
Hospital in
Minneapolis.
Ernie was
born in New
Prague on De-
cember 26,
1947, a son of Eugene and
Emily (Horejsi) Tikalsky. A
lifelong resident of New
Prague, he attended St.
Wenceslaus School, New
Prague High School, and was
a farmer. He married Patricia
Speikers on March 8, 1975,
in Montgomery. Ernie was a
veteran of the U.S. Army and
a member of the Northfield
American Legion. He battled
MS for 45 years and loved
being with his family. He en-
joyed the outdoors and fish-
ing, and liked watching his
grandchildren participate in
wrestling and cross country.
He is survived by his wife,
Belle Plaine; children Jen-
nifer (Bobby) Church, Jor-
dan, and Aimee Lynn
Tikalsky (and special friend
Ben Robinson), Le Center;
two grandchildren Taylin
Rae Church and Landon
Church; his mother, New
Prague; and a brother Gene
Ticker Tikalsky, New
Prague.
He was preceded in death
by his father.
Private services were held,
with interment at St. Wen-
ceslaus Catholic Cemetery in

Breakfast with Santa from
7:30 to 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec.
9, at the Knights of Colum-
bus Hall, 411 Fourth Ave.
SW(Highways 13 and 21).
Families can enjoy a
breakfast and the children
can visit with Santa to let him
know what they want for
Christmas.
New Prague Area Emer-
gency Medical Services is
taking over the Breakfast
with Santa. Some of the
members of the organization
previously belonged to the
New Prague Volunteer Am-
bulance Service and have
formed the new group to con-
tinue to give back to the com-
munity. The group does such
programs as child seat safety
classes and clinics and edu-
cation classes. In the last four
years the group has also
placed 37 automatic external
defibrillators (AEDs) around
the community.
Their newest addition is a
scholarship program. Three
members of the 2013 gradu-
ating class will receive a
$500 scholarship.

Shakopee
gives OK
to dog park
The Shakopee City Coun-
cil recently approved a pre-
liminary plan to develop a
wooded 50-acre property.
The land is located north of
Southbridge Parkway and
south of Highway 169 and
was formerly state property.
The area would include
nature trails and nearly 10
acres of it would be for
Shakopees first off-leash
dog park. Work on the area is
anticipated to begin in 2013.
The councils approval
comes after months of dis-
cussion between the citys
Park and Recreation Adviso-
ry Board and Environmental
Advisory Committee as they
considered development pro-
posals. The land contains
one of the last oak savannah
forests in the area, has sensi-
tive animal species the go-
pher snake and prairie mouse
and native prairie.

A large number of con-
cerned residents attended the
Le Sueur County Planning
and Zoning Commissions
public hearing on Tuesday,
Nov. 27 in the county 4H
building.
The purpose of the hearing
was to hear comments and
concerns regarding the
amending of the countys
zoning ordinance and map. It
is the first change for the
documents since they were
adopted in July, 2007.
In 2009, the County ap-
pointed an 11-member plan-
ning and zoning task force
that has met almost 40 times
to discuss zoning ordinance
changes. At the November 27
meeting the commission en-
couraged testimony and pub-
lic input, and that is what
they received. Among the
comments:
Stan Wills of West Jeffer-
son Lake questioned lot
sizes, and urged the commis-
sion to keep in mind substan-
dard lots that currently dont
need variances if upgrades
are wanted.
Al DeKruif read a letter to
the commission about
tourism and campsites in the
county and how it has con-
tributed to the states econo-
my. He said after reading the
400-page document, he saw
very little information on
recreational sites.
Im asking you to make a
specific recreation portion to
the document and follow that
up with a meeting to be sure
we have the options and rep-
resentation, he said.
Mike Clemmens asked the
commission to consider set-
back requirements for fence
lines. Jerry Lucas of Lake
Washington agreed with the
commissions description of
the current document as con-
fusing and unclear. He also
agreed with Clemmens that
fencing is a huge issue,
particularly against wetland
boundary setbacks.

at Holy Trinity Lutheran
Ann Svennungsen, bishop
of the Minneapolis Area
Synod of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church of America
(ELCA), will visit Holy Trin-
ity Lutheran Church Sunday
Dec. 9. She will offer the ser-
mon and perform the instal-
lation ceremony for the
church's new minister. The
Rev. Erick Thompson, dur-
ing the 9:30 a.m. service.
Svennungsen was elected
this February and was in-
stalled in May as the first fe-
male bishop of the Min-
neapolis Area Synod. The
morning will include a
brunch after the service for
the congregation, the bishop
and other invited guests,
mentors and friends of
Thompson's.
Thompson began his min-
istry at Holy Trinity in Octo-
ber after the church complet-
ed the synod-sponsored pas-
toral call process. Council
President Bret Cardwell said
this celebration at the church
is a time of excitement for
the future after a period of
uncertainty at the start of the
year. Pastor Erick and his
family are a wonderful addi-
tion to the New Prague com-
munity.

Montgomery
may hold line
on property
tax increase
After earlier indicating a 5
percent property tax levy in-
crease may be necessary, the
Montgomery City Council is
working on reducing that
figure to zero, it was an-
nounced during the councils
November 26 meeting.
City Administrator Steve
Helget said holding the line
on the levy is possible, and
he has worked on that aspect
following budget workshops
held by the council.
Commenting on the citys
5-year financial plan passed
that evening, Helget said the
city is on the right track.
The general fund deficit will
be gone by the end of the
year and hopefully we can
start building our reserves.

we have was a lesson Raven
Stream and Falcon Ridge el-
ementary school students in
New Prague learned last
week.
Climb Theatre of Inver
Grove Heights performed
two plays about conservation
to area students on Wednes-
day, Nov. 28. To kindergarten
through second grade stu-
dents at the two schools they
presented "Space Baby."
Third through sixth graders
saw "Flashback." Both plays
dealt with preserving the en-
vironment through conserva-
tion of resources.
"Space Baby" is about
third grader Clara who has to
take care of FargyGo, an
other-worldly toddler.
"Flashback" deals with
Dax, a young man who lives
in a future world that is a bar-
ren wasteland and he has to
use a mechanical breathing
apparatus. Dax, with the help
of SES (Save the Earth Soci-
ety the students in the audi-
ence), discovers a way to
travel back in time to the pre-
sent. He tries to affect his fu-
ture by encouraging changes
in the past.
"Flashback" also encour-
aged reducing, reusing and
recycling items such as paper
and composting items that
can be used for fertilizer.
During the play students
were asked for ways they
could help the environment
and to conserve resources.
Helping students learn about conservation
"Dax," center, the main character of Climb Theatres "Flashback" takes answers from
Falcon Ridge Elementary School students about ways to conserve the environment.

Greta Ryan, daughter of Shawn and Lori Ryan of New

hair cut for Locks of Love. Ryan, 9 and-a-half, had her
hair cut at Artistic Edge in New Prague. This was the sec-
ond time for the fourth grader at Raven Stream Elemen-
tary School in New Prague to donate to the organization
that makes wigs from the hair, which are given to chil-
dren who have lost their hair due to medical reasons.

A town with a population
of only 7,500 might not seem
like the best place for a pro-
fessional theatre company to
set up shop. New Prague,
however, is not your typical
town.
Already sporting two com-
munity theatres, New Prague
is about to become home to a
professional company, as
well: DalekoArts.
The company, headed up
by New Prague hometowner
Ben Thietje and his wife
Amanda White, will produce
an inaugural season of three
shows from June to Septem-
ber. The company will reside
in New Prague, but utilize an
ensemble of professional ac-
tors and designers from the
Twin Cities.
My growing up here was
a big reason that we chose
New Prague, explained Thi-
etje. Ive had the pleasure of
witnessing this communitys
love and commitment to the
arts firsthand. The people of
this area support the arts as if
they lived in a place five
times its size. From an
artists perspective, New
Prague is a really unique
place to be.
An artists perspective is
one the pair knows well. Thi-
etje and White have more
than 30 years of professional
theatre experience between
them. Aside from directing
theatre in the New Prague
school system for the past
decade, Thietje has also pro-
duced more than a dozen
shows in the Twin Cities, as
well as acted at professional
theatres such as The Old Log
and Park Square.
White has worked as an
actor, director, and producer
in both Chicago and New
York, and is the new Manag-
ing Director at Mixed Blood
Theatre in Minneapolis.
Daleko a Czech word
meaning far away was
chosen to reflect New
Pragues strong bohemian
roots, its spatial relationship
to the Twin Cities, and the
companys desire to step
back and examine the world
from a different point of
view.
New theatre companies
are popping up every year in
Minneapolis and St. Paul,
said White. The region is an
incredible place to experi-
ence and work in the arts.
But theatre seems to be just a
part of life in New Prague.
We hope to become an inte-
gral part of the community
and we hope that the commu-
nity will eventually feel like
DalekoArts belongs to
them.

A farm hand bought an
automobile in St. Peter with a
worthless check on the
Cleveland bank. He is now in
jail, and the auto will do him

The New Prague Planning
Commission took one last look
at the citys Comprehensive
Plan Update during its month-
ly meeting Wednesday, Nov.
28.
The commission has spent
most of the year reviewing the
plan and making changes to
help the city with its planning
through the year 2035.
Joanne Foust, a principal
with Municipal Development
Group, a consulting firm,
helped the commission in up-
dating the plan.
Foust explained that a com-
prehensive plan is a document
that establishes guidelines for
the future growth and redevel-
opment of the city. The current
update covers four chapters
Demographics, Housing, Land
Use and Transportation.
Foust noted that the plan not
only looks to the future, but
also to the past for reference.
She noted demographics of the
city. New Prague had a popu-
lation of 4,559 in 2000, and
7,321 in 2010, an increase of
63 percent. Projections esti-
mate that the population will
be 9,700 in 2020, and will ap-
proach 12,000 in 2030 and
13,000 in 2035.
We are projecting growth,
but at a slower, more conserva-
tive pace than in the past
decade, Foust said.
The document also has in-
formation on housing trends,
education, employment, in-
come and household statistics.
As far as housing, the docu-
ment shows that the umber of
households in the city grew
from 1,735 in 2000 to 2,862 in
2010, an increase of 65 per-
cent. The plan estimates that
there will be nearly 5,000
households by 2035.
Other notable statistics are
that 35 percent of all housing
units in New Prague have been
built since 2000, and that there
is a need for about 32 new se-
nior housing units by 2020.
Mike Kotila of the engineer-
ing firm Short, Elliot, Hen-
drickson gave a brief overview
of the Transportation chapter.
He noted the purpose of the
chapter was to balance the
need for convenient and effi-
cient access for local residents
and businesses while main-
taining mobility and safety on
the roadway system for all
users.
He said the plan identifies
needs and makes recommen-
dations for future roadway net-
works, including local roads,
collector roads and arterial
roads.
Foust then went over the
chapter on Land Use. She said
the guiding principles used
when developing this chapter
is that the city wants to retain
the spirit of a small town,
wants to continue to have
downtown as a place to gather,
have a well-balanced tax base,
take a proactive position on fu-
ture growth and have an iden-
tity that reflects the place, his-
tory and heritage of the city.
The land use plan takes into
account the inventory of va-
cant lots for residential, com-
mercial and industrial uses,
and proposes to try to fill in the
majority of vacant lands before
annexing additional lands into
the city.
In addition, the land use
chapter identifies 14 sites that
are either proposed to be re-
zoned to another district or
sites that have redevelopment
potential.
No one from the audience
asked to speak about the plan
during the public hearing. It
was noted that there were sev-
eral written comments from
people who attended an open
house on the plan earlier in the
month. The commission rec-
ommended approval of the
amended plan by a 4-0 vote
(with Chair Bob Gilman ab-
sent).
City Planner Ken Ondich
said the city council was to dis-
cuss the plan at its December 3
meeting, and it is hoped the
council will vote to adopt the
plan at its December 17 meet-
ing.

Recount affirms Dahle
win in Senate District 20

Minnesota Secretary of
State Mark Ritchie an-
nounced on Tuesday, Dec. 4,
that Kevin Dahle (DFL-
Northfield) is officially the
Senator-elect for District 20,
following the meeting of the
state canvassing board.
A recount was automati-
cally triggered after the gen-
eral election results showed
a narrow margin of victory
for Dahle over Mike Dudley
(R-New Prague). Ballots
were hand counted in Rice
County on Wednesday, Nov.
28, in Le Sueur County on
Thursday, Nov. 29, and in
Scott County, Friday,
November 30.
The recount showed that
Dahle received a total of
20,627 votes and Dudley
had 20,556; a gain of six
votes for Dudley and the
loss of one vote for Dahle.
Auditors in Le Sueur
County counted a total of
11,900 ballots, which took
four hours to complete. Dud-
ley was the victor in Le
Sueur County with 6,067
votes over Dahle with 5,294.
Le Sueur County Finance
Director/Election Adminis-
trator Carol Blaschko said
the recount included both
absentee and polling place
votes. She added that the
process went smoothly for
them as theyve been
through several recounts in
the past four years.

Chart building taking shape
Work on the new building at Chart Industries is progressing rapidly. In the past two weeks, the steel framework of
the building has been put in place and work has begun on the exterior walls. Chart hopes to be able to move into the

Fire safety tips
for the Holidays
With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it seems
that there's never enough time to get everything done. It's im-
portant, though, to be sure that safety doesn't get left off the
list.
During the Holiday season, fires cause more than $18 mil-
lion in property damage and Holiday decoration injuries
send more than 13,000 people to the emergency room. Peo-
ple can help keep their families safe this season with these
quick, simple steps.
Water the Christmas tree--Dry trees pose a fire risk;
water real trees frequently.
Check the lights-- Inspect all lights and decorations for
damage or wear. Cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires and
loose connections may pose a fire risk.
Plan a fire escape--Identify at least two exits from every
room in the home.
Be flame aware--Always blow out unattended candles
and teach children to stay away from lit candles and fire-
places.
Check extension cords--Do not connect more than three
light strings together. Also be sure to check the rating on the
extension cords and do not plug in more than the recom-
mended wattage.

The New Prague Trojan
wrestling team opened the
season with a 5-0 record to
top the six-team field at the
New Prague Duals Saturday,
Dec. 1.
The Trojans closest match
was in the second round,
where they came from be-
hind to defeat Chatfield 32-
31.
Three Trojans finished the
day unbeaten - Morgan Par-
riott at 145 pounds, Griffin
Parriott at 132 and Cody
Sirek at 195. The two Par-
riotts were 5-0 and Sirek was
3-0 before being injured in
winning his third-round
match and didnt wrestle the
final two rounds.
Each Trojan won at least
one match, with five of them
- Zach Lafavor, Andrew Mar-
suak, Nick Knutson, Richard
Reinartz and Joe Heinz -
going 4-1.
New Prague is ranked No.
5 in Class AA. The Trojans
return to action at a triangular
Thursday, Dec. 6, at
Janesville. The other teams
are Waterville-Elysian-Mor-
ristown/Janesville-Waldorf-

New Prague started slowly
in their first-round match
against Cannon Falls, losing
the first four matches. But the
Trojans won five straight to
take the lead on their way to
a 45-26 win.
Griffin Parriott started the
Trojan run with a 47-second
pin at 132 pounds, then
James Berg took a 15-0 tech-
nical fall at 138 and Morgan
Parriott earned a pin in 40
seconds to put the Trojans up
17-14. Reinartz had a major
decision and Heinz scored a
pin to make it five in a row.
Also getting wins for the Tro-
jans were Maruska (182
pounds) and Lafavor (285)
by pinfall and Sirek (195) by
forfeit.
Trojans 32, Gophers 31
New Prague trailed Chat-
field the entire match until
Nathan Preston scored a pin
in 20 seconds at 220 pounds,
giving them a 32-27 lead.
Chatfield needed a technical
fall to force a tie, but came up
short as the Trojans hung on
to a 32-31 win.
The Trojans won just one
of the first four matches, a
fall by Knutson at 113
pounds, and trailed 15-6.
Griffin Parriott won a battle
between two state-ranked
wrestlers, 1-0 at 132 pounds,
but then the Gophers got that
back with a decision at 138
making it 18-9.
The teams traded the next
four matches, with Morgan
Parriott winning a major de-
cision at 145 and Heinz get-
ting a decision at 160. Chat-
field had an 11-point lead at
27-16 with four matches left,
but the Trojans won the next
three. Maruska won a forfeit
at 182, then Sirek won a
major decision at 195 to set
up Prestons win at 220 that
put the Trojans up for good.

After dropping their first
match by major decision, the
Trojans got a technical fall at
112 pounds from Knutson
and never trailed in turning
back Sibley East 46-22.

boys hockey team dropped its
first two games of the season,
falling to Mankato West 6-2
and North St. Paul 1-0.
The Trojans were scheduled
to face Rochester Lourdes (No.
9, Class A) on Tuesday, Dec. 4.
They will have a long break
before their next game, at
home on Thursday, Dec. 13,
against Mahtomedi.
Scarlets 6, Trojans 2
New Prague drew first blood
in their opening game against
Mankato West when Auggie
Isaacson put in a rebound at
4:29.
However the Scarlets scored
the next three goals to take
command. They tied the game
late in the first period and
scored two quick goals in the
second to take a 3-1 lead.
New Prague made it 3-2 on a
power play goal by Seth Kriha
at 9:56, but the Scarlets scored
less than a minute later to go
back up by two. West added a
pair of power play goals early
in the third to coast to the win.
Ben Witt and Alex Gregor
assisted on both Trojan goals.
West outshot the Trojans 28-
20. Evan Bisek stopped 22 of
28 shots for New Prague.
Polars 1, Trojans 0
New Prague dominated
much of the action in a non-
conference game Saturday,
Dec. 1, at North St. Paul, but
was stymied by Polars goal-
tender Mario Bollmann, who
stopped all 39 shots he faced to
give his team a 1-0 shutout
win.
New Prague outshot the Po-
lars 39-22, including a 21-6 ad-
vantage in the third period, but
Bollmann stopped everything
that came his way.
The Trojans had just three
penalties, but they proved cost-
ly as all three came in a six-
minute span in the second peri-
od, with the Polars scoring the
games only goal on the power
play
Bisek also had a good game
in goal, stopping 21 of 22
shots.

wins over Big 9 Conference
teams last week. The Trojans
defeated Austin 71-60 and
Mankato East (No. 6, Class
AAA) 69-56.
The Trojan girls were
scheduled to play at Waconia
Tuesday, Dec. 4. They host
defending Class AAAA
champion Hopkins (No 1,
Class AAAA) on Friday,
Dec. 7, and play at Glencoe-

Trojans 71, Packers 60
New Prague was never re-
ally threatened in their home
opener Tuesday, Nov. 27,
against Austin. The Trojans
had a comfortable halftime
lead of 11 points and
stretched the lead to as many
as 22 points in the second
half before pulling their
starters.
Perhaps the most impres-
sive aspect of the Trojans
dominance was an eight-
minute stretch in the second
half when their top two scor-
ers, Lexi Ruehling and Annie
Dittberner, were both on the
bench with four fouls. In-
stead of collapsing, the Tro-
jans extended their lead dur-
ing that stretch, not allowing
Austin to get back into the
game.
Senior Steph Hanson
picked up the slack for the
Trojans. She had a career-
high 20 points and had eight
steals. Dittberner finished
with 15 points and eighth-
grader Maizie Deihl had 11.
Also scoring for the Trojans
were Ella Grote (8),
Ruehling (7), Ashley
Altschul (4), Kayla Kroyer
(4), and Jess Allar (2). Grote
pulled down six rebounds for
the Trojans and Hanson and
Ruehling each had four as-
sists. As a team New Prague
had 19 steals and forced 27
Austin turnovers while com-
mitting just 12.

Three Trojan seniors -

points as the Trojans upset
No. 6-ranked Mankato East
69-56 on the Cougars home
court Thursday, Nov. 29.
We have tremendous se-
nior leadership on this team.
The maturity they show on
and off the court is as good as
we have had here, Trojan
coach Ron Gunderson said.
This is a tight group that
really enjoys the time they
spend together. They are also
very driven. They have set
high goals and are willing to
pay the price that achieving
those goals brings.
Gunderson went on to say
that Ruehling is playing
strong in the post, and the
two senior guards, Dittberner
and Hanson, are controlling
the tempo at both ends.
Ella Grote is making
shots and battling inside
while Jess Allar is strong on
the defense. Kayla Kroyer,
Maizie Diehl and Ashley
Altschul are great coming off
the bench, he added.
We have some young
players that will see time as
the year progresses. This is a
great group and I believe we
will see improvement each
night out.
Dittberner and Ruehling
each had 20 points and Han-
son added 11 as the Trojans
pulled away from a tight
game in the second half.
Grote joined the three seniors
in double figures, scoring 12,
while Allar had 4 and Kroyer
2.
The Trojans defensive
pressure and shooting accu-
racy were factors in the win.
New Prague had 15 steals
and forced 23 turnovers,
while shooting 50 percent
from the field. They made 22
of 29 free throws (75.8 per-
cent). East had an 33-25 ad-
vantage on the boards.
Ruehling grabbed eight re-
bounds while Dittberner had
10 assists and four steals and
Hanson and Grote added
fours steals each.

Jasperson said the Trojans

Breakdown Tip-off Classic at

with 14 games played in two
gyms starting at 11 a.m. New
Prague faces Maple Grove at
5:30 p.m. in the east gym.
Thirteen of the 26 Minnesota
teams playing are ranked in
the top 10 in their class.

Well, the noise I heard
from my deer stand turned
out to be a squirrel. Squirrels,
turkeys and coyotes were all
I saw after 2-1/2 days of hard
hunting in southwestern
Minnesota. Eugene Palma
didnt fare much better
He saw one fawn.
However, on the last after-
noon, as we readied to leave
the woods and head home,
our luck changed.
A single doe, chased by
gunfire from a neighbors
woods, picked our wooded
location for safety. Bad deci-
sion for her. She ended up
right between us and I
promptly knocked her down
with a well-placed shot.
We actually had to chuckle
about it. Sometimes it is way
better to be lucky than good
at hunting. We loaded her up,
registered her in town and
headed home, still smiling
about our luck.
Apparently, others in
southeastern Minnesota fared
better than us as the deer har-
vest this year was up from
last year.
I did manage to bag a nice
coyote from my deerstand.
They are plentiful down
there and I saw way too
many of them during day-
light hours.
Back home, I exchanged
my shot guns for my muz-
zleloader and began another
season. I turned down a de-
cent buck on opening day.
Im still not quite sure why I
didnt shoot him Oh well. I
also saw a doe, which I could
not shoot.
Then, I packed my gear
again. My son Joe was taking
me deer hunting in southern
Iowa, the home of monster
bucks. Im not sure which of
us was more pumped. I knew
I wouldnt sleep well on
Thursday night before leav-
ing on Friday, Nov. 30. Joe
had been there several times
and some of the bucks hes
taken now hang on the tro-
phy room wall.
I wrote this column before
leaving on the trip. I know
even if I dont get one, Ill
still have a blast. Joe and I
have not hunted together for
some time. I still remember
sitting with both boys when
they shot their first bucks.

for local hockey program
In the spirit of teamwork
taught by youth sports, New
Prague Chevrolet is teaming
up with the New Prague Area
Hockey Association to pro-
vide their players and coach-
es with hockey equipment
kits filled with hockey pucks,
cones, water bottles, t-shirts,
coaches clipboards, a spon-
sorship check and an oppor-
tunity to help them raise
funds.
New Prague Youth Hockey
Association will have the op-
portunity to raise as much as
$10,000 through a fundrais-
ing opportunity where a
lucky recipient will win the
Ultimate Pro Hockey Pack-
age, which includes four
tickets to a Minnesota Wild
game in March in addition to
hotel accommodations and
all-access passes.
New Prague Chevrolet and
other Minneapolis-St. Paul-
area Chevrolet dealerships
are donating these prizes to
participating leagues in the
area. All of the proceeds col-
lected from the fundraiser go
directly to the leagues. The
funds may be used in any
way the league chooses.
A one-time sponsorship
check will be presented by
New Prague Chevrolet to
New Prague Youth Hockey
Association. The league also
will have an opportunity to

Mayo hosts memorial service Dec. 13
Dealing with the loss of a loved one is challenging at any
time of the year, but it can be increasingly difficult during the
holiday season. In order to remember those who have died,
Mayo Clinic Health System in New Prague is hosting A
Light of Hope and Peace 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, in the
Jameen Mape Conference Center on the hospital campus.
The event features a candle lighting ceremony, live music,
a short message and a memorial name reading. A Light of
Hope and Peace is free and open to the public, and light re-
freshments will be provided. Participants are welcome to
bring pictures of loved ones they are remembering.

The New Prague Toastmasters Club will celebrate its 20th

Author talk and book signing on Dec. 13
Author Tom Melchior will relate stories of his experiences
gathering interviews and writing the book "Never Forgotten:
Stories by Scott County World War II Veterans" at 6:30 p.m.

(SCHS). There will be a question and answer session after
the presentation and Melchior will sign books.
Melchior worked with the SCHS to create this extraordi-
nary book, interviewing more than 70 World War II veterans
to collect and preserve their stories.

A year of preparations re-
sulted in positive reviews for
choirs that formed the Distin-
guished Concerts Singers In-
ternational. Hymnus, based
in New Prague, was among
those choirs that created the
mass ensemble that per-
formed at Lincoln Centers
Avery Fisher Hall on Sunday,
Nov. 25.
Hymnus, with choirs from
across the country, including
New York, Montana, Con-
necticut, Hawaii and Wash-
ington D.C., were extended
invitations to sing at the New
York City landmark. The
choir of 208 people of vari-
ous ages sang George
Friederic Handels "Messi-
ah." Distinguished Concerts
International New York City
organized the event.
"I was extremely happy
with how the Hymnus mem-
bers performed during the
trip to New York," said Rush
Wagner, director of the choir.
More than 20 members par-
ticipated in the event, the
youngest having just turned
11. The group flew out of the
Twin Cities on the afternoon
of Thanksgiving.
Hymnus stayed at the Hol-
iday Inn Midtown and re-
hearsals at the Park Central
Hotel were just a 10-minute
walk away. Mary Zard, choir
administrator for Hymnus,
said Park Central Hotel was
across from Carnegie Hall.
"The choir members exem-
plified professionalism dur-
ing rehearsals; something
which was noted by other
choristers and directors
alike," said Wagner. He also
thought it was nice at how
prepared Hymnus was.
"I was very proud of every
Hymnus members especially
the children," said Zard.
She noted that other land-
marks such as Times Square,
Rockefeller Center and Cen-
tral Park were nearby. Hym-
nus members didnt think
they would have time for
sight seeing due to the long
rehearsals, but they were able
to sneak some in.
While Wagner didnt per-
form with the choir, he did at-
tend the rehearsals and the
performance. During the re-
hearsals he took notes on the
styles of Dr. Jonathan Grif-
fith, Artistic Director and
Principal Conductor of Dis-
tinguished Concerts Interna-
tional New York City.
There were various groups
that did reviews, from blog-
gers to a critic from the New
York Times, who said, "The
chorus handled some of
the works most involved
passages confidently and
produced a ravishing sound
at climaxes."
"The reviews for the en-
semble en-mass have been
very complimentary, and in
my opinion, this is well de-
served," said Wagner.
"It was great weather while
we were there and the entire
trip was wonderful," said
Zard.
"I am very proud of (Hym-
nus) efforts up to and includ-
ing the entire New York trip,"
said Wagner.
Next up, Hymnus will be
caroling at the Guthrie The-
atre in Minneapolis on Satur-
day, Dec. 15, before the
Guthries production of "A
Christmas Carol." Then
Hymnus will focus on the
Verdi Requiem for its Febru-
ary concert with the Dakota
Valley Symphony.
