I also have to get him to therapies, manage his supplements, cook his gf/cf/sf organic meals from scratch, and work like hell to get the mercury that was put in him out of his brain and body. He was diagnosed very hush-hush with "heavy metal intoxication" in 2003 at Children's Medical Center in Dallas, TX where we were told it was the vaccines but we couldn't say that because it was "for the greater good" and our son was just "one of the losses," and we should just go home and "accept it." " I can not attend the hearing for several reasons: My daughter with Autism is now sick once again and even if she wasn't I could not go because she runs away from me, has no fear of traffic, heights, strangers, she has several food allergies making it extremely difficult to go out of town with her and when we rarely do we have to pay a lot of money to have a hotel room with a kitchen so I can cook her special meals, but besides all of the other reasons above I simply can not afford it, Autism has financialy destroyed me, our extremely expensive insurance does not pay for therapy and the supplements she requires they however do pay for 70% of her immune therapy medicine after I meet my annual deductable of $7500 and that is very hard to do when you are unemployed and receive no medical, SSI, food or cash assistance. Please think of all of the children and families that our suffering and struggling every day to make it through the day, please put yourself in our shoes and image how hard it would be to not give your child what they need to feel better and not be sick and in pain all of the time. My husband also works full time and is unable to attend." [Son] is 20 and [daughter] is 18, so we are in transition into adulthood. I am not able to work outside the home because they cannot function independently. " I have two girls with Autism (ages 11 and 8). We were lucky, got early intervention for both and they are now considered higher functioning. However, the school system was not enough and so we supplemented many of the early interventions ourselves through private providers. This took a huge toll on our family financially but was well worth it. I cannot express to you enough the stress and burden that autism has had on our family and all families. We have had to fight our school district constantly in order to receive appropriate services. We have filed for 3 IDEA Due PRocess Hearings in the past 3 years. The first 2 settled, we had a 4 day hearing for the most recent filing this past summer. Due to needing an Attorney, expert witnesses etc in order to seem credible we incurred a debt of over $20k for this. Unfortunately the judge ruled that schools only have to provide "some benefit" and even if there is regression as we were able to prove that an appropriate education is provided if there is some benefit somewhere. Essentially if a child improves in an area regardless of the reasoning (parent help, natural developmental growth etc) then the school district has done their job. This was not sufficient for us - we expect more and so we now drive our child to a charter school 25 miles away that is for children with High Functioning Autism. We are fighters, know what our kids need, know our rights etc but it didn't matter as the school system was not required to provide anything beyond a pre-determined amount of services despite IDEA requirements. Children are required to be at school during the bulk of the day - there is only a short amount of time after school that they can receive necessary services. If we don't require the school system to do more and provide what is needed to these children then when will they get the help? "I am solely responsible for my 22 year old daughter with autism."
