Tuesday, December 11 Sunday, January 6 MUMMENSCHANZ PERFORMANCE Celebrating 40 years, the internationally acclaimed Mummenschanz is poised to bedazzle a whole new generation of audiences this fall and winter when the legendary mask theater company returns to North America with a special full-length program, from November 2012 to March 2013. The U.S. and Canada performances are part of a larger calendar of worldwide jubilee events for the 40th anniversary to mark the beloved companys four-decade legacy of bringing its uniquely imaginative and ground breaking art form to international stages. As a centerpiece to the U.S. run, Mummenschanz will present a special limited holiday engagement for four weeks at NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, from December 11 through January 6, 2013. THE DEATH OF A PRESIDENT, CARPET AND OTHERS STORIES EXHIBITION OPENING The exhibit at Orchard Windows Gallery by Swiss artist Izet Sheshivari exploits the hypothetical value of the classical use of a grey carpet that has already been in use in another gallery on the same street and put in the trash. The artist finds thereby a subtle way to illustrate the use of an artifact. One galleries trash is another artist collection. On view until December 9th, 2012. YOUR SISTER AND OTHER BOB MAYSES ARTIST TALK A.I.R Gallery is honored to host a talk by Swiss artist Elianna Renner and curator Anne Kohl of the feminist gallery, galerie futura located in Berlin, Germany. In the course of this event, artist Elianna Renner will discuss her artwork based on womens oral history, occasionally circling around the recovery of her own familys past. FERDINAND HODLER EXHIBITION Ferdinand Hodler: View to Infinity is the largest American exhibition ever devoted to this major Swiss artist. Hodler was admired by such Austrian artists as Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, whose work is essential to the Neue Galerie collection. The organizing curator for the Neue Galerie is Jill Lloyd, a distinguished scholar who has assembled several important shows for the museum, including Van Gogh and Expressionism. December 13 + December 14 8pm THE MEDEAD PERFORMANCE This premiering collaborative musical version of the 6-play epic The Medead fuses Fiona Templetons multivocal poetic fireworks with Samita Sinhas soaring vocals and instrumentation, layering ancient and future soundscapes. 10 years in the making, The Medead ranges across history and the subconscious to excavate the multi-viewpoint reverberations of a myth of east and west, of a womans power to sing a skin of language over the invisible. Friday, December 7 ALBERT GALLATIN EXHIBITION OPENING New York University Libraries will host an exhibition Albert Gallatin: a Genevan at the Heart of the American Dream in the Mamdouha Bobst Gallery in the Bobst Library beginning December 7, 2012 through April 1, 2013. The exhibition will feature the many roles Gallatin played in the United States as statesman, diplomat, ethnographer, and founder of New York University. The original exhibition was curated by the Library of Geneva and was on display there last year. The exhibit is open to the public from 9:30am-6:00 pm, Monday through Saturday. Friday, December 21 THE CLOCK EXHIBITION OPENING Winner of the Golden Lion award at the 2011 Venice Biennale, Christian Marclay's The Clock is a cinematic tour de force that unfolds on the screen in real time through thousands of film excerpts that form a 24hour montage. Appropriated from the last 100 years of cinemas rich history, the film clips chronicle the hours and minutes of the 24-hour period, often by displaying a watch or clock. MEANWHILE IN SWITZERLAND
LAUSANNE FLUX COCOON FOR LAUSANNE LUMIERES THROUGH JANUARY 2013 Installed in the heart of the city of Lausanne, Flux Cocoon is one of the winning projects of the citys first Light Festival: Lausanne Lumieres by Allegory, a Geneva based architecture and design firm. The project is created with a primary wood structure and metal cables and 1100m of Red Led Neon Flex lights. The installation sets foot on the existing bridge structure and connects itself to the vertical building containing the elevators. The exhibit includes fashion, graphic design, photography, mediation and product design by young and established designers. Image: Dorade www.museum-bellerive.ch BASEL MARKUS RAETZ THROUGH FEBRUARY 17, 2013 The Department of Prints and Drawings of the Kunstmuseum Basel is dedicating a retrospective exhibition of drawings to the Bernese artist Markus Raetz (b. 1941). Over 200 watercolors, drawings and polaroids, 60 sketchbooks, and an animated film, all created between 1960 and 2012, have been selected for the show in close consultation with the artist.
