BRANDON HOOVER, Pequea Valley
With a solid defense in front of him, Hoover wasnt required to make as many saves as other
L-L goalies this fall, but the ones he did make along with his uncanny ability to clean up
passes in the box were crucial in leading Pequea Valley to the Section Three title and the
frst PIAA Class AA championship in program history. Hoover, who was selected to the All-
State team, backed a defense that allowed an L-L-best four goals during the league season.

ROBBIE MARTIN, Pequea Valley
After going 12-8-1 overall a year ago, Martin guided the Braves to a
25-3 record this fall, including a 14-0 mark in Section Three that brought
Pequea its frst section title since 2004. After losing in the District Three
Class AA semifnals, Martin rallied his team to win the frst PIAA Class
AA championship in program history and just the fourth state boys soc-
cer championship in Lancaster County history.
Boys Soccer Coach of the Year
Lancaster, Pa. 4 DECEMBER 10, 2012 2012 Fall all-stars
Gochnauer, a dominating force in the midfeld, helped lead the Indians to the PIAA Class AA
semifnals. She is a four-year Section Three First Team and two-time All-League selection, who
will attend Penn State. She fnished her career with 29 goals, 42 assists and 12 defensive saves.
Her presence on the feld is undeniable, Donegal coach Jessica Shellenberger said of
Gochnauer. She controls and dominates the midfeld, often shutting down the opponent before
they can even reach the 25. Her movement with the ball and decision-making are top-notch. She
fawlessly tackles and distributes with ease. Her ability to read the play and react quickly and
make decisions is impressive.
I thought she was amazing throughout our postseason run. You could feel her every emotion
out there. She wanted it and it transcended to her teammates and lifted us through some rough
spots in games.
Off the feld, Kirsten is one of the most humble, caring and compassionate kids you will
meet, Shellenberger continued. She carries herself with a lot of maturity. She is respected by
all who know her, especially her teammates.
In school, she is currently ranked sixth in the class and is in our gifted program as well as a
member of the National Honor Society.

Patience is a virtue. And while Madelyn Shaaks three-year wait to ascend the pinnacle of
L-L tennis may have been less than patient at times, the four-time league fnalist fnally earned
her reward this year. After three runner-up fnishes, Shaak nailed down her frst L-L Class AA
singles title with a straight-set victory over Lancaster Catholics Elizabeth Veronis.
Shaak, who fnished 22-2 in singles competition, suffered one of her two losses of the season in
the District Three Class AA fnal, falling to Wyomissings Audrey Ann Blakely. It was Blakelys
frst title after three runner-up fnishes.
Shaak once again teamed with Kristi Fidler to successfully defend their L-L Class AA Doubles
title as the Raiders duo fnished the year with an unblemished 18-0 mark.

DOUG PENNINGTON, Manheim Township
Doug Pennington will be the frst to tell you Manheim Townships success in girls
tennis has everything to do with the skill and fortitude of the players whose sweat and
tears as well as skillful baseline volleys, passing shots and smashes at the net de-
livered victory. Hes just been along for the ride. Still, it has not happened in a vacuum.
Since taking over upon the retirement of legendary coach Gordie Groome in 1996,
Penningtons Blue Streak girls have maintained their lofty position as one of the top
teams in the L-Ls Section One. This season they repeated as L-L League team cham-
pions their third straight L-L team title as well as wrapping up their third straight District Three
Class AAA team championship. Overall, Penningtons teams have
won eight L-L team titles and six district AAA crowns.

ROMAN
CLAY,
Lancaster
Catholic
Roman Clay may have been a headline writers dream, but the L-Ls all-time leading rusher (5,940 yards)
was a nightmare for opposing defenses. You have to stop Clay before he gets (running) downhill,
McCaskey coach Rob Monzon said this season of the leagues leading rusher and scorer. Once he gets
downhill, its like trying to stop a train. Few defenses derailed this 215-pound Division I recruit. Fronted
by a big and physical offensive line, Clay hammered out 2,497 yards this season to pass Lebanon Catholic
graduate Tommy Long as the L-Ls career rushing leader.

Spot was 0-10. Fast-

Matt Zamperinis Spar-
tans fnished the regular

LANCASTER NEWSPAPERS
The just completed fall
sports season ended with many
Lancaster-Lebanon League ath-
letes taking home the ultimate
prize: a state championship.
Not only were these athletes
able to succeed on the local level
but all achieved tops in the state
in their respective classes.
Heres a brief look at each of
the fall seasons state champs:
Perhaps Lancaster Catho-
lics girls tennis coach George
Veronis said it best when talking
about the Crusaders tennis dou-
bles team of Elizabeth Veronis
and Julia
Davis.
Both
played at
the high-
est level
and peaked at the right time,
George Veronis said.
Having lost in the District
Three Class AA fnals to a team
from Berks Catholic, Elizabeth
Veronis and Davis rebounded to
defeat the Berks Catholic duo in
the PIAA Class AA fnals.
With all the success the
Hempfeld girls volleyball team
had during the regular season,
the players werent used to hav-
ing to pick themselves up after
a loss.
Yet thats what they did.
When the Black Knights lost to
Cumberland Valley in the Dis-
trict Three
Class AAA
semifnals,
the pos-
sibilities of
winning a
state title
darkened somewhat.
But the Black Knights
recharged their batteries and
refocused on states, leaving the
loss in the rearview mirror. The
result was a victory over Park-
land in the state fnal, defeating
the team that beat them a season
ago.
Holding a one-shot lead
with one hole to play during the
fnal round of the PIAA Cham-
pionships at Heritage Hills Golf
Resort in York, Craig Hornberg-
ers state title hopes appeared to
fade when he hooked his drive
into the wa-
ter on the
18th tee.
Instead,
after taking
his drop,
Hornberger
responded
with what he called, The best
shot I ever hit a 198-yard
5-iron that ended up 10 feet
below the hole which enabled
the Blue Streaks senior to save
bogey and secure a one-shot vic-
tory in the Class AAA feld.
One day after earning
an individual state gold medal,
Craig Hornberger went out
and helped his teammates mine
gold.
Getting 2-under 69 from
Hornberger, which was the
low round of the day, Manheim
Township captured the PIAA
Class AAA team title.
It was the second consecutive
PIAA team gold for the Blue
Streaks, who won last years
crown when there was only one
class.
Denied a District Three
title with a 1-0 loss to Tulpehock-
en in the Class AA semifnals,
Pequea Valleys boys soccer
team regrouped for a golden run
through the state tournament
bracket.
After avenging their district
semifnal loss with a 1-0 win over
Tulpehocken in the state semis,
the journey culminated when se-
nior forward
Isaac Mohr
scored the
gamewinner
with 7:43 left
in the second
overtime,
giving the Braves (25-3) a 1-0
victory over defending L-L
champion Lancaster Mennonite
in the PIAA Class AA champion-
ship game.
Golden f inishes for
many L-L athletes

MORGAN LOWE, Hempfield
Morgan Lowe used the experience of winning a state
championship as a sophomore and going to the fnals as a
junior to fuel her will to get she and her Hempfeld teammates
back to the states biggest match. A guiding force on the court,
Lowe was able to lead the Black Knights, along with her fellow
seniors, through the postseasons rough waters. In action, the
Lehigh recruit was her normal versatile self, putting balls
down from the outside as well as getting them up from the
back row.
