Description

How to collect Statistical and Error logs from HP tape drive using HP LTT tool
Platform

Solaris 10
Model

Sun Servers with Solaris 10/X86 OS and HP LTO Tape drive

Category

Troubleshooting
Problem statement

HP LTO tape drive is experiencing undetermined errors. Need to acquire log information to determine what the problem is.
Summary

1) A major feature of LTT tool is ability to generate reports and support ticket. 2) In event of hardware failure, a report or support ticket can provide the vital information to help diagnose and resolve the problem. 3) When a report or support ticket is generated, LTT collects the configuration information and executes a Device Analysis test on the selected drive. 4) Support tickets contain high technical data and it is available for LTO drives.

Solution

Solaris Installation Pre-requites 1. The device should be shown in the cfgadm al and prtconf v command output. 2. The device drive for connected tape drives and libraries or the default device drive should be present. Installation Procedure: 1. Login as root into the system. 2. Download and copy the LTT tar file, hp_ltt<xx>.tar (where xx is version number) to this directory. 3. Un-tar the LTT tar file.
bash-3.00# cd HP-Utility/ bash-3.00# ls hp_ltt414sr1_solaris_sparc.tar bash-3.00# bash-3.00# bash-3.00# tar -xvf hp_ltt414sr1_solaris_sparc.tar x HPLTT414, 0 bytes, 0 tape blocks x HPLTT414/pkgmap, 43301 bytes, 85 tape blocks x HPLTT414/pkginfo, 188 bytes, 1 tape blocks x HPLTT414/reloc, 0 bytes, 0 tape blocks x HPLTT414/reloc/ltt, 0 bytes, 0 tape blocks x HPLTT414/reloc/ltt/catalogs, 0 bytes, 0 tape blocks x HPLTT414/reloc/ltt/catalogs/enu, 0 bytes, 0 tape blocks x HPLTT414/reloc/ltt/catalogs/enu/common, 0 bytes, 0 tape blocks x HPLTT414/reloc/ltt/catalogs/enu/common/d_aitac.cat, 10267 bytes, 21 tape blocks x HPLTT414/reloc/ltt/catalogs/enu/common/d_aitdrv.cat, 8376 bytes, 17 tape blocks .. x HPLTT414/reloc/ltt/scripts/test/tstor_da3.pmg, 3330 bytes, 7 tape blocks x HPLTT414/reloc/ltt/scripts/test/util_tst.plg, 8004 bytes, 16 tape blocks x HPLTT414/reloc/ltt/scripts/test/xrw_tst.plg, 4591 bytes, 9 tape blocks x HPLTT414/reloc/ltt/scripts/test/xrw_tst.pmg, 35254 bytes, 69 tape blocks x HPLTT414/install, 0 bytes, 0 tape blocks Wipro Infotech Enterprise Services Page 2 of 6

4. Run the installation script in the directory.

bash-3.00# ls HPLTT414 bash-3.00# hp_ltt414sr1_solaris_sparc.tar install_hpltt

5. After the installation is completed, to determine whether LTT is already installed on the system, use the following command.
bash-3.00# /usr / b i n / pkg in fo | grep LTT

6. You must do scan on the system to save them into saved_scan.txt in default install dir of the LTT tool. As long as no changes are been made (IE no drives added or removed from the system) then you should never have to do the scan again.
The syntax of the command is
bash-3.00# cd ltt/ bash-3.00# ls catalogs firmware hp_ltt bash-3.00# logs misc scripts

bash-3.00# ./hp_ltt -f scan HP LTT Started.. Please Wait until it completes.. --------------------------------------------------------------Library & TapeTools - Commandline parameter version Mon Nov 26 12:51:47 2012 --------------------------------------------------------------User passed options: -f scan --------------------------------------------------------------/ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2::: 0.5.0[st@5,0-/dev/rmt/0]:HP:Ultrium 3-SCSI:G63Z /ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2,1::: /ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2,1::: /ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2,1::: /ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2,1::: /ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2,1::: /ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2,1::: /ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2,1::: /ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2,1::: /ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2,1::: Wipro Infotech Enterprise Services

7. You should verify whether the HP tape drives are been seen by the LTT tool. Once the drive are seen you must use the ticket option to get the support ticket or dump off of the drive, you have to get the path of drive correct or it will not pull the dump from the drive successfully. The exact path is in
bash-3.00# ls catalogs firmware hp_ltt logs misc saved_scan.txt scripts

bash-3.00# more saved_scan.txt /ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2::: 0.5.0[st@5,0-/dev/rmt/0]:HP:Ultrium 3-SCSI:G63Z /ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2,1::: /ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2,1::: /ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2,1::: /ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2,1::: /ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2,1::: /ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2,1::: /ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2,1:::

8. Below is command that successfully pulled a dump in the correct .lzt format from a drive.
bash-3.00# ./hp_ltt -f ticket p=/ssm@0,0/pci@1a,600000/pci@2/scsi@2:::0.5.0[st@5,0-/dev/rmt/0]:HP:Ultrium 3SCSI:G63Z HP LTT Started.. Support Ticket is Generated successfully and stored in the directory path: /opt/ltt/logs

And then here is an example of the file that was placed in the logs dir.
bash-3.00# ls Database_config.cfg EventLog_backup_1.ltt EventLog.ltt prl.txt st_HPUltrium_4-SCSI_20100824_113715_HU18031635.lzt toolactivity.log

Note: Engineer should just grab the .lzt file and upload to Oracle or respective Vendor for further analysis.
