BACKGROUND
The first HIP-HOP INAUGURAL BALL, a black tie, charity gala benefiting the Hip-Hop Summit Research and Education Fund, was held at the Harman Center for the Arts, in January of 2009. Inspired by the sweat equity and leadership, emerging from the 2008 campaigns and exhibited by the HIP-HOP community, Russell Simmons introduced this historic event, honoring and celebrating this new political presence and collective power. The impact was evident from the sheer number of Hip-Hop artists who attended the Ball and the invaluable sponsors who supported this celebration of civic engagement. Some of the celebrities in attendance at this stellar event were Russell Simmons, LL Cool J, T.I. and Tiny, Nick Cannon, Busta Rhymes, Young Jeezy, Ashanti, Trey Songz, Bow Wow and many more. Its 2012 and again the people have spoken, and the youth vote exceeded the record breaking numbers of the 2008 election. The Hip-Hop community once again engaged in voter registration efforts around the country and effected change. This year PHILANTHROPIK, a non-profit organization dedicated to building diversity initiatives in social, civic, and economic endeavors and the HIP-HOP Summit Action Network support Russell in recognizing the continued momentum of the Hip-Hop community to stay engaged.
