The time to find those last-
minute holiday deals is coming to
a close, while Voorhees has been
attracting holiday shoppers to
both the mall and local business-
es alike.
Economic director Michael
Marchitto said Voorhees busi-
nesses are doing well this season.
He said most businesses have
reported fairly strong sales like
last year. Although the official
numbers are not released, Mar-
chitto said positive reports are
coming into his office.
From the reports I am read-
ing that come through my office, I
know that shopping has been up a
bit. The major stores in Voorhees
report strong sales, he said.
Marchitto said the small busi-
nesses are also doing well.

Most children are eager to
open gifts during the holidays.
This year, Santa will make a spe-
cial trip on Christmas Eve.
Escorted by Voorhees police
and fire personnel, Santa will de-
liver presents to less fortunate
children as a part of the Voorhees
Police Departments annual holi-
day fund drive.
According to the U.S. Census
Bureau, 11 percent of Camden
Countys population is below
poverty level.
During the holiday season,
Voorhees Police Department col-
lects as much as it can to help
Voorhees residents, as well as res-
idents of the surrounding who
are struggling financially.
Event coordinator Stephanie
Fowler said if the department re-
ceives requests for assistance and
there are no longer funds to help,
they try their best to direct them
to someone who can.

s 2012 winds to a close, The
Sun has a couple of special
editions planned.
The first one will be on Dec. 26. It
will be a look back at the major stories
and issues of 2012. Well recap the year
through stories and photos.
The second special edition will be on
Jan. 2. It will be a look ahead to 2013,
and its where we invite you to help us
with our coverage.
Our associate editors are lining up
interviews with local leaders, such as
mayors and school superintendents.
Were preparing a list of questions re-
garding the new year. The idea is to
give the leaders an opportunity to dis-
cuss upcoming issues.
Do you have any questions for your
local officials? If so, please send an
email to us. Our email address for
news submissions appears on this
page and throughout the paper.
Now, were not asking officials to
break out a crystal ball and offer their
prognostications for 2013. No one can
anticipate everything that will happen.
Hurricane Sandy is a prime example.
The storms impact will be felt well
into 2013 and, in some places, even
longer.
But it is possible to set a basic agen-
da for the new year. There may be
some lingering issues from 2012 that
will be wrapped up. There may be
some opportunities or challenges that
already are on the schedule for the up-
coming year. Taxes, for example, al-
ways will be a major topic of discus-
sion. Hopefully, local governing bodies
already are working on plans to make
efficient use of your tax dollar, and
perhaps leaders can share some of
those ideas.
Our editors want to be as thorough
as possible when interviewing local
leaders. They dont want to miss a
question that is on your mind, which is
why were asking for your input.

If we have the funds to do it
we help them. If we dont, we try
to guide them in another direc-
tion. We have never had a prob-
lem using the funds to help fami-
lies, she said.
For about 12 years, the depart-
ment has been collecting money
to help local families in need and
by buying gifts and sometimes
providing food before the holi-
days, she said.
In past years, we have raised
anywhere between $8,000 and
$18,000, Fowler said.
Fowler collects the wish lists
and buys each item. She said the
police and fire departments play a
large role in the process.
Some wrap the gifts, while oth-
ers escort Santa around town.
Fire Chief Jim Pacifico said
his department is more involved
on the delivery end, but they help
as much as they can.
Pacifico had the opportunity to
help deliver the presents one year.
Its a very heart-warming ex-
perience to know that we can as-
sist our local families in need, he
said.
Most of the children shy away
when Santa visits, Fowler said.
The holiday drive is more than
just delivering presents to chil-
dren in need. While others show
joy in seeing Santa arrive at their
home with special gifts for them.
Its the smiles on the chil-
drens faces and the gratitude and
tears in the parents eyes that
keep us going from year to year,
Fowler said.
Involving the police and fire de-
partments show the children they
should not be afraid of emer-
gency response members.
Some kids are afraid of the
police and fire. Its a way to let
them know that we are there,
Fowler said.
The department is collecting
monetary donations to help fund
gifts for children.
We are trying to make their
Christmas dreams come true. A
lot of these children have never
had their wish list fulfilled. We
try to give them a special year to
remember, Fowler said.

backbone of the business world,
he said.
According to Marchitto, be-
tween 1,400 and 1,500 businesses
exist in Voorhees, and new stores
are on the way to opening their
doors in the township.
The retail stores are not the
only ones doing well.
Marchitto said restaurants are
also reporting strong sales.
A recent opening was the
Rodizio Grill the Brazilian Steak
House in the Voorhees Town Cen-
ter. According to an announce-
ment from Pennsylvania Real Es-
tate Investment Trust (PREIT),
the 5,900-square-foot facility fea-
tures authentic Brazilian-style
foods.
PREIT also announced the win-
ter 2013 opening of Burger 21.
With more businesses opening
in town, the Voorhees Business
Association (VBA) has more
members.
Marchitto said there are ap-
proximately 109 members of the
VBA. He said when he started
working in the township 12 years
ago he remembers only 35 busi-
nesses were members of the
VBA.

Rachels Challenge is a pro-
gram based on the life of Rachel
Scott, the first person killed in the
Columbine high school shooting
tragedy of 1999.
Before her death, Rachel had
written an essay about her goals
for her life. She cared deeply
about making students feel wel-
come and a part of the
Columbine community.
Each day she tried to reach out
to others in a kind and compas-
sionate way.
When her family found her
essay along with her journal writ-
ings, they created the Rachels
Challenge program to extend her
message of respecting all people
despite our differences.
On Nov. 7, the Bishop Eustace
community was honored to wel-
come Rachels uncle, Larry
Scott, as the speaker for a presen-
tation.
Powerful footage of Rachels
life and the Columbine tragedy
was presented during the one-
hour school assembly. The goal
was to motivate our students for
positive change in the way they
treat others.
Freshmen and sophomore stu-
dents saw the presentation enti-
tled Rachels Challenge where
they were presented with five
character challenges supported
by Rachels vision of kindness
and compassion.
Junior and senior students
were presented with Rachels
Legacy that will further
enhance the messages of spread-
ing kindness within our commu-
nity.
