HEADING? MULTI NATIONALISM INTERNATIONALISM?

Defination:
(Among its many meanings, nationalism has been invoked to describe the quest of an ethnically defined group for greater political control over its affairs, most commonly in the form of a state of ones own, as well as the continued exercise and expansion of national power, both internally and externally, after statehood has been achieved. ) [a]

History Types Positive points Negative points Account of one Future of nationalism Conclusion
ven a cursory scan of todays newspaper headlines provides evidence that, in its many forms, nationalismalthough the term itself is only rarely invokedis an increasingly salient factor in contemporary global affairs and the practice of foreign policy. Ethnic fissures in a host of fragile states have raised questions about the continued viability of some multinational polities, while even in a stable Europe, which has undergone a decades long drive toward political and economic integration, nationalisms stubborn

persistence remains a puzzle to some and a comfort to others. From a re-assertive Russia and rising China, to a United States grappling with its relative decline, competition among various forms of state-driven nationalism is creating new tensions in an increasingly multi-polar world. Recently and dramatically in the Middle East and, ever more so, in Africa, nationalisms complex interrelationship with religion has added yet another volatile dimension to the challenge. Perhaps most significant and perplexinghas been the interplay between nationalism and the integrative, technologically driven-imperatives of a globalizing world, which upon close examination, can both magnify and dampen its appeal. In sum, nationalisms effect on contemporary international politics is as inescapable as it is significant. (a)
