The council discussed their op-
tions and questioned if it would be
better to have all drop down mics.
It was noted that after Fugate
attended the most recent KCBA
meeting, they showed interest in
helping with costs. Fugate also
plans to attend the school board
meeting, as well, to present costs.
Colby Shuck said he thought the
music parents may show interest
in helping with funding; Jackie
Stilwell said another organization
may help as well.
The council showed interested in
helping with the project.
Nathan Riggins reported that
one water leak had been fixed.
Under the street report, Patrick
Solon said the new furance has
been installed in the city shop.
However, there is a problem with
water in the new propane tank.
Under solid waste, the council
heard that the red pickup has been
fixed and repairs were not as bad
as expected.
Brad Jorgensen questioned the
costs of hauling the recyclables
and debated whether or not there
could be a cheaper way for the city
to tranport the cardboard, etc., to
Rapid City.
Bar Manager JoBeth Uhlir said
poker is done for now and will
restart after the first of the year.
After running four months of in-
ventory specials, Uhlir said, she
didnt know if she will continue
with the specials.
Mayor Weller gave the audito-
rium/park report in the absence of
Micki Word. He said the audito-
rium is busy with activities.
Council person Ryan Willert
questioned if there was a need to
hire part-time help for Billie Jo
Eisenbraun.
There was also discussion as to
what the old weight room is being
used for at this time. Mainly, the
room is being used to store football
gear, drama props and KCBA
items.
Weller read a letter of resigna-
tion from council person Micki
Word, who stated she would like to
step down from her position, due to
health reasons. She also thanked
the council for the years on the
council.
A motion was made by Ryan
Willert and carried, to accept her
resignation with regret.
There was no discussion for a re-
placement in that ward.
Setting a date for an end-of-the-
year meeting was discussed. The
city will need to act on contingency
fund transfers. However, at this
time, until payroll is done, the
tranfer amounts are unknown as
some department balances are es-
timated. In addition, there was dis-
cussion on paying for the new
furnace at the shop.
The special meeting was set for
Thursday, December 27 at 5:00
p.m.
The meeting ended in executive
session to discuss setting salaries
for 2013.
The Kadoka City Council held
their regular meeting on Monday,
December 10 with all member
present, except Micki Word.
The council approved the min-
utes of the November meeting, the
bills and financial statement.
There was one bid received and
opened for the solid waste trans-
portation contract. West River Ex-
cavation bid the same amount as
last year which was $500 per trip
and that for every five cents over
$3.00 per gallon of fuel, $5.00 be
added.
A motion carried to accept the
bid from West River Excavation.
The council approved BankWest
as the official depository, the
Kadoka Press as the official news-
paper and Alvin Pahlke as the offi-
cial attorney.
Bob Fugate, who was on the
agenda to discuss the auditorium
sound system, was unable to at-
tend the meeting. However, he left
information with the finance offi-
cer.
Patty Ulmen said Fugate had
been in contact with Mid States
Audio & Video, the same company
out of Sioux Falls that installed the
current sound system at the audi-
torium.
The sales person provided op-
tions of going with three or four
wireless microphones (over the ear
mic elements) at a cost of $680 per
unit. Hes also recommended three
wired microphones at $255 apiece.
There would be an additional cost
of $700 for the company to go over
the system, make adjustments and
install the equipment. These costs
would total $4,185.

Crooners in concert A community-wide dinner and Christmas concert were given, Sunday, Decem-
ber 2, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Kadoka. The mens singing group, the Haakon County Crooners,
performed their own style of four-part harmony Christmas music. We dont do holiday concerts, we do Christmas
concerts, said director Marlis Doud. The Crooners then traveled to Wall to perform in the Wall Community
Hall. The next concerts for the Crooners are scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in a community wide concert at the Open
Bible Church in Midland, Saturday, December 15, and at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, December 16, in the Haakon County

KCBA holds December
meeting at Jiggers
The Kadoka Community Betterment Association held their December
meeting on Thursday the 6th at Jiggers Restaurant.
A number of Christmas promotion bills were approved for payment, as
was the payment to Black Hills, Badlands & Lakes. Budget issues and
3Bs money were also discussed.
Once again there were issues with the CBS sign by Mitchell; it still has
not been fixed. Billing has been received, however, following discussion,
members approved a motion to not sign another contract with the com-
pany. They will look into other signs.
Secondary Principal George Seiler presented information regarding
costs for a new sports complex scoreboard. If KCBA wanted advertising
on the top banner, costs are estimated to $8,500. Members felt a smaller
section of advertising would be more feasible. There was no action taken.
Bob Fugate presented information regarding the sound system at the
city auditorium. He also said he would talk to the city council and school
board about costs. A motion carried to help with funding to some extent.

Meals for

2 Corinthians 1:18-22
The Christian life rests on a foundation of God's
promises for today and for the future. We can trust
everything that our heavenly Father has said because
His Word shows Him to be...
Truthful. The Lord knows what is true and speaks honestly in all matters. We can be assured of this
because He is holy; there is no sin in Him. He is also omniscient and understands everything (Heb. 4:12-
13). His promises are based on His infinite knowledge and truthfulness.
Faithful. Scripture compares the Lord to a shepherd who "gathers the lambs in his arms and carries
them close to his heart" (Isa. 40:11 niv). What He has planned for us, He will bring to fruition (Rom. 8:28).
Our heavenly Father does not waver in His intentions or will.
Loving. God's love for us was demonstrated at the cross. He sent His Son Jesus to die by crucifixion
and thereby take the punishment for our sins. The Savior experienced God's wrath against iniquity so
we might know only His love. This is the ultimate proof of His devotion to us.
All-powerful. Divine power created the world and raised the Savior back to life, so we know God has
the ability to carry out all His plans. Our omnipotent Father can keep every one of His promises.
A promise is valuable only if the one making it has trustworthy character and the ability to carry
through. Our heavenly Father is truthful, faithful, loving, and all-powerful. We can base our entire life
on His promises, secure in the knowledge that He will do just as He has said.

Whatever would we find to do if
we didnt have to constantly deal
with changes -- or fix stuff and tidy
things up? We might be forced to
watch TV all the time or read tons
of books. If youre a sportsman, you
might have to hunt or fish all the
time. What a bleak outlook. It
doesnt bear thinking about.
This all occurred to me the
other day as I was driving around
the ranch. I first went to the river
place to consult with Ted about his
health insurance. The company
has discontinued his type of policy
-- probably because it was too gen-
erous so they werent making
enough money on it. Anyway, if
you havent dealt with health in-
surance lately, youre lucky. Its a
pain as is all insurance. There are
countless companies and tons of
options to consider. First you have
to decide how much coverage you
want followed by consideration of
cost, deductible, co-insurance
(whatever that is,) and a few dozen
other things. It takes quite a bit of
reading and thinking to come up
with a policy that might acciden-
tally be the right one for you. The
total time spent is considerable.
Without dealing with changes in
insurance, Ted and I could have
watched more TV.
On the way back out of the river
ranch, there was Jim on the road
fixing a gate. That bit of wire
stretched between two posts had
been closed when I went through
the car gate next to it earlier, but I
guess Jim didnt think it would
stay that way very long without
some upgrading. Anyway, he had
a spool of barbed wire and the
other tools and supplies needed to
effect repairs. He was making good
progress, as far as I could tell,
until one of his leather gloves got
misplaced. Barbed wire and bare
hands dont go together very well.
The glove was eventually run to
earth and work resumed. Without
gate disintegration, Jim might
have had time to take a nap or
even go fishing, and fishing was a
possibility. The river and stock
dams were not frozen over that
day which is a little odd for the
first week of December, but there
you are. Sometimes theres ice a
foot thick already by Thanksgiv-
ing, never mind Christmas.
When I got back to the home
ranch, semi-resident-carpenter
Chad had most of the north wall of
the car garage torn off. It was, ac-
cording to him, a load-bearing wall
that was no longer bearing much
of anything. The two-by-fours had
rotted off at the bottom, and there
was some danger of collapse. This
was by no means the oldest build-
ing on the place, but somehow it
was the one falling apart. Im not
sure what caused the wood to go
bad, but it was probably a combi-
nation of poor siding and maybe
the vermiculate Dad had used to
fill the bottom half of the wall. The
insulating material might have
collected moisture let in by the bad
siding and promoted rot. Who
knows the whys and wherefores,
but there was a definite problem
that needed to be addressed. With-
out having to deal with collapsing
buildings, Chad could have gone
down to the river place and shot a
few more prairie dogs. That is
something he enjoys quite a bit. He
did eventually call it a day, grab
his gun and go, but it was fairly
late in the day by then. He claimed
he needed a change from carpenter
to varmint-control officer.
A bit later I was scratching
around in the basement looking for
some stuff when I noticed a pile of
cardboard boxes needing disposal.
The floor needed to be swept as
well. I didnt have time right then
to do much cleaning, but the work
is still there needing to be done
and promising to take up some of
my leisure time in the near future.
If you look around anywhere you
happen to be, there usually is
something or other that needs
cleaning or straightening. The top
of my desk is a case in point.
On the other hand, maybe we
need change and all the other
things that take time. Any useful
and necessary work tends to make
us think we are accomplishing
something and are therefore useful
and indispensable people. It helps
the ego a bit. Well, in any case,
there is no shortage of work out
there that we can do to build our
sense of self-worth. Arent you just
tickled to death about that? I
surely am.
Feeling Useful
Lookin Around

Kenny and Roxie Fox drove to
Wall on Saturday to do some team
roping at the indoor arena. Roxie
has done a lot of barrel racing in
her lifetime, but roping is some-
what new. As a result, she and
Kenny roped in the novice division
so she could get the feel of it.
Kenny said her horse was also
somewhat of a novice, but they did
okay and caught their first calf
without much trouble. Kenny also
participated in the Draw Pot and
Rifle divisions. In the rifle part,
you can win a rifle. In the other,
you put your name in a pot, and
your team-roping partners name is
drawn out of the pot for you. When
you havent roped with someone be-
fore, it adds a little interest to the
proceedings. Kenny did okay on
that and came in first on one go-
round and third on another.
Eve and Abby Fortune drove to
Rapid City on Saturday to take in
the musical play, Beauty and the
Beast. They enjoyed it quite a bit.
When it was time to come home,
however, the weather had turned
bad so they booked themselves into
a motel for the night and came
home on Sunday. By then, the
roads and traveling werent too
bad. Chuck, meanwhile, stayed
home and tended the home fires.
Mark DeVries and family have,
as usual, been attending wrestling
meets. Gavin was in a meet at
Rapid City on Friday and Satur-
day, and Mark went to Rapid on
Friday but not Saturday. Geoffrey
was in a meet at Pierre on Satur-
day. He went there with Smileys.
On Monday, everyone but Mark
was headed back to school in
Kadoka. Mark needed to stay home
and do chores.
Greg and Dana Badure and fam-
ily were watching the National Fi-
nals Rodeo on TV on Sunday
evening, as they have every
evening since Thursday. Randy Pe-
ters joined them for that. Earlier
this week Brisa spent a couple of
nights with her friend, Tejai Sanft-
ner, and Tejais dad, Tim. They
stayed at a waterslide motel east of
Rapid City, which was fun. This
was the longest Brisa had been
away from home without her folks,
but she did okay as long as she
could call home occasionally. Back
at home, three baby goats were
born this weekend to add to the
herd. Greg said Frank Carlson and
Dana are in cahoots when it comes
to raising goats. They both like
them quite a bit. When you become
friends with goats, of course, you
cant eat them but can make some
money if you sell them since they
are fairly popular at present.
Badures milk some of the goats
from time to time, and have sold
some milk to a family in Kadoka
who has a kid thats allergic to cow
milk.
Pam Osborn helped Dana
Badure clean out her garage one
day so it could house some baby
goats. On Sunday, Pam and Eric
cut some wood. During the week,
Pam helped Badures with the rest
areas east of town, and Eric
worked as usual at Moses Building
Center in Philip.
Delores Bonenberger said her
grandson, Kade, was around this
weekend helping here and there.
He returned to North Dakota on
Sunday where he is helping Collers
with some water lines. Delores will
attend her last county commission
meeting this week since she is re-
tiring as a commissioner at the end
of the year. She has served for 16
years and figures thats about long
enough. Larry Johnston will re-
place her on the board. He was un-
opposed when he ran for that
position so he will be installed at
the January meeting.
Churchgoers in America report
better moods on Sundays, when
the rest of the country has a
lower mood than normal,
according to a recent Gallup Poll.
The same poll found that
Americans who attend church
have more positive emotions
than those who dont.

The ladies of St. John LA-LWML
hosted their annual Christmas Tea
at St. John Lutheran Church
Thursday, December 6, 2012, be-
ginning at two in the afternoon.
Pastor Denke led the Christmas
devotions, Christmas carols were
sung, and after some brainteaser
games, the goodies were served.
There was a bakers dozen there en-
joying all that.
Noreen Krogman has been extra
busy working at various post of-
fices in the area, but did find time
to help with the 4-H fruit when it
came in on Tuesday, December 4.
She was planning to take in quilt-
ing Sunday afternoon, but the
weather decreed otherwise.
Tuesday after Susan Taft was off
work, Dan and Morgan Taft accom-
panied her into White River to help
with the 4-H fruit, and then they
made their deliveries that evening.
Thursday afternoon, Heather was
among the ladies attending the
Christmas Tea at St. John. Friday
Dan, Susan and Morgan were in
Bonesteel to pick up corral panels.
They also stopped in at the sale
barn in Winner, and had time after
that for a bit of Christmas shop-
ping. Meanwhile at home, Heather
had time that evening to go visit
Jean Kary for a while.
Morgan is playing her flute to
accompany one of the musical
numbers the children are singing
in the childrens Christmas Eve
service at St. John Lutheran
Church, which will be at 7:00 p.m.
December 24.
Saturday morning Jace and July
Schmidt went along with Grandma
Lori to help with the concessions at
the wrestling meet in Mission. Lori
is kept busy with her pre-kinder-
garten class on weekdays.
After Orlana Schmidt came back
from her trip to Alaska, she began
working as a teachers aide at
White River High School in the sci-
ence classes. She likes this educa-
tional stuff, and is thinking about
grade school sometime in the fu-
ture. They were home Tuesday
evening to receive their fruit orders
from Morgan.
Linda, Jeremy and Tyler Ring
attended the girls basketball
games in Long Valley Monday
evening. Thursday Linda took the
day off work, and put in a full day
of traveling and activities. She took
Jeremy to the orthodontist in
Murdo Thursday morning, stop-
ping for a couple errands in White
River on the way back. Then took
Jeremy over to school in Long Val-
ley and then continued on to Mar-
tin to do some business there. They
made it back to Norris in time to
attend the LA-LWML Christmas
Tea at St. John Lutheran church
that afternoon. She finished there
in time to make it over to meet the
boys at the bus stop after school.
The hours difference in time helped
there.
Robert and Sharon Ring were in
Rapid City on Wednesday, as
Robert had a check-up on his re-
cent foot surgery. Thursday after-
noon was spent at the church,
helping host the Christmas Tea.
Jan and Jessie Ring helped host
the Christmas Tea at the church.
June had left her contributions
there the night before after the Ad-
vent Service, as she wasnt sure she
would be back in time from Rapid
City. She did make it in time for the
tail end of the games before they
served the goodies.
Bruce and June Ring went to the
girls basketball in Long Valley
Monday evening. Stephanie plays
on the B team. Wednesday
evening the Bruce Ring family and
June attended the Advent Service
at St. John. Early Thursday morn-
ing Bruce took June to Rapid City
in time for her 8:00 a.m. MRI ap-
pointment. He had time to run
some errands while she was busy
there, and after picking up a bat-
tery and some groceries, they did
make it back to Norris by mid af-
ternoon. Meanwhile, Jessie kept
Bradley while Nicole worked at the
store in the morning, and then
Nicole took Bradley and Risa home
with her, so Jessie had the after-
noon free to help with the Christ-
mas Tea. Friday Bruce, Stephanie,
Ryan and Reina were in Kadoka for
the elementary girls basketball
tournament. Teams involved were
Kadoka, Long Valley and Interior.
It started in the afternoon and
went on into the evening. Saturday
afternoon Bruce cut down a dead
apple tree at Rueben Rings, and
Ryan and Reina helped pick up and
pile the wood.
News from Bobbi Kelley is that
the Norris School Christmas pro-
gram is scheduled for Thursday,
December 13 at 2:00 p.m.
Friday Jim and Marjorie Letel-
lier were at Sunshine Bible Acad-
emy for the elementary and high
school Christmas concert. Julie
Letellier and Andrea Beckwith also
attended the concert. There were
four Burma children and two Beck-
with children in the concert. There
had been some snow at Sunshine,
and that night they drove home in
fog.
Darla White Hat hosted a birth-
day party at the Norris Township
Hall Saturday for her 12-year-old
twins, Tahj and LaTeesha White
Hat.
Gary and JoAnn Letellier were
in Philip Friday and visited Bill
Letellier in the hospital while they
were there. Cason Brown and fam-
ily of Rapid City brought Marjorie
Letellier with them and were visit-
ing Bill that day, too.
The Christmas display is going
up at the Gale and Gary Letelliers.
Sundays stormy weather slowed
things down a bit.
Jean Kary was among the ladies
attending the Christmas Tea at St.
John Church Thursday.
Howard and Nette Heinert were
in Valentine on Thursday and vis-
ited Erna Heinert while they were
there. Saturday Chris and Beau
helped work cattle at Gary Hein-
erts place. Nette has finished an-
other jeans quilt.
Everett Heinert came from
Wyoming Thursday to help Gary,
as they sold calves, and then he
was there to help sort cattle, wean
heifers, etc. on Saturday. Erin came
home for the weekend to help, too.
Bill and Kenda Huber drove to
Dimock on November 27 for the fu-
neral of Rev. Robert Utecht. Bills
uncle, Burton Larvie, rode with
them. Burton was one of the first
ones that Pastor Bob met when he
came to work as Missionary on the
Rosebud. The casket was draped
with a quilt, and as they told the
history of Rev. Utechts many years
in the ministry in various places in
South Dakota (16 in Gettysburg, 19
in Dimock, and from 1993 on in
Rosebud and Pine Ridge), they
mentioned that Burton was among
those who welcomed the Utechts to
the Rosebud, and then handed the
quilt to Burton.
The Hubers are now harvesting
the sunflowers. Kenda was among
those attending the Christmas Tea
at St. John Thursday.
Evan and Dorothy Bligh were
guests of Ron and Becky Patton
December 1, as they helped Kate-
Lynn celebrate her 10th birthday.
Tuesday the 4th, they were in Win-
ner on business. They were back
home in time to welcome the deliv-
ery of their 4-H fruit from the Tafts
that evening. Thursday Dorothy
gave Maxine Allard a ride to the
Christmas Tea at St. John.
Rev. Denke recently visited Bill
Letellier at the hospital in Philip.
Wednesday evening he conducted
Advent services at St. John, and
Thursday had the devotions for the
Christmas Tea. Friday he was on
his way to Pierre for the annual
pastors Christmas gathering for
the circuit. Pastor Andrew Utecht,
Lori, Amos and Isaac were also
there for the gathering. They
stayed overnight, as Amos was in a
wrestling match the next day.
Maxine Allard called her sister,
Betty, for her birthday last Mon-
day. The first time she tried, she
was unsuccessful as Betty had
been having lunch with their sister,
Helen, and her husband. Maxine
had a call from her brother, Tom,
also last week what he calls his
Christmas card calls. He calls and
chats instead of sending a Christ-
mas card. Saturday Maxine and
June had a Saturday luncheon
once more. It had been a while
since they had one.
Rose West said that the museum
has many beautiful trees through-
out the museum. Coming up the
15th, Santa will be at the museum
for the children to come and visit.
Wednesday, the 12th, the Mas-
ter Gardeners have JoAnn Letel-
lier there at the museum for a
Christmas wreath making session.

Vern McDonnell__________________
Vern McDonnell, age 101, of
Quinn, S.D., died Friday, Decem-
ber 7, 2012, at the Hans P. Peter-
son Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Vern McDonnell was born May
15, 1911, on his parents home-
stead 10 miles north of Quinn, the
son of Frank and Ida (Riesing) Mc-
Donnell. He grew up on the home-
stead and received his education at
the Huron Township Rural School
in that area.
He worked on the Grandma Mc-
Donnell farm for several years. He
also farmed with his parents until
entering the U.S. Army on July 8,
1942. He served until his honor-
able discharge on November 17,
1945. He returned to the Quinn
area where he continued on that
family farm.
Vern was united in marriage to
Beulah A. Harrison on June 6,
1949, in Wall, and to this union
was born a son, Steven. They made
their home on their present farm
which they farmed their entire
married life. In 2005, the farm be-
came a century farm, having been
in the family for 100 years.
After Beulahs death on April 17,
1994, Vern continued to reside on
the farm until March 1, 2006,
when health reasons forced him
into the Philip Nursing Home.
Vern was a member of St.
Patricks Catholic Church of Wall,
the FJ Willuweit VFW Post #9120
of Quinn, and the Carroll-McDon-
ald American Legion Post #246 of
Wall.
Survivors include his son,
Steven McDonnell and his wife,
Terry Jo, of Quinn; four grandchil-
dren, Rhonda McDonnell of Wall,
Coral McDonnell of Denmark,
Brady McDonnell and his wife,
Sherri, of Rapid City, and Jay Mc-
Donnell of Quinn; nine great-
grandchildren, Madison, Laketon,
and Cooper McLaughlin of Wall,
Sara Rose McDonnell of Denmark,

McDonnell of Wall, and Finn Mc-
Donnell of Rapid City; and a host
of other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife Beulah,
Vern was preceded in death by his
parents; a grandson, Travis Mc-
Donnell; and his twin brother,
Tom.
Mass of Christian burial was
celebrated Tuesday, December 11,
at St. Patricks Catholic Church in
Wall, with Father Leo Hausmann
as celebrant.
Music was provided by Gene and
Rita Patterson.
Ushers were Madison and
Cooper McLaughlin and Bradan

late Ed and Polly Kujawa.
Several friends attended the
graveside rites at the National
Cemetery near Sturgis on Thurs-
day of last week for Ruby Cadman,
former Kadoka resident, who
passed away in Rapid City on De-
cember 3. Among those attending
who are from the Kadoka, Long
Valley and Rapid City area were

after the services. Sympathy is ex-
tended to Rubys family.
Ron Barber and his wife, Barb,
of Black Hawk celebrated their
50th wedding anniversary on De-
cember 7 (and he said Marie
Schnee gave them five years at the
most). Ronnie said they werent
going to celebrate too much but did
plan to go out to eat in Hill City on
Friday. He also said he missed see-
ing the news from Interior and
wishes someone would write the
news again.
Sympathy is also extended to
the family of long-time resident
Harold Schnee, 95, who died at the
Kadoka Nursing Home on Decem-

Harold was a WW II Veteran. Pri-
vate family burial will take place
later at the Kadoka Cemetery.
Pam and Keith Bonenberger
went to Mitchell on Saturday to
visit with Alisha Sommerville and
Joslin over the weekend. While
there they attended a cheerleading
and dance competition in which
Joslin, age 5, participated. She is a
member of the Explosion Xtreme
Cheer Team and Alisha is one of
the coaches. Pam and Keith re-
turned home on Monday, as the
snow storm in the area delayed
their return on Sunday.
Jerry Stilwell was discharged
from the hospital and rehab center
in Rapid City last week after two
months of hospitalization. He will
be going to Philip for therapy once
a week and he and his family are

Gov. Dennis Daugaard has pro-
posed a balanced Fiscal Year 2014
budget that provides more money
for education, medical services for
the poor and state employee
salaries.
South Dakotas economy has re-
covered better than nearly every
state in America. Our healthy econ-
omy is partly due to getting our fis-
cal house in order at the state
government level, the Governor
said. As a result, my FY2014 pro-
posed budget allows for modest,
sustainable growth.
Gov. Daugaard outlined his new
budget proposal in an address to
the South Dakota Legislature. The
measure balances the next budget
for essential state services without
increasing taxes.
It also leaves more than $16 mil-
lion this fiscal year and over $10
million in FY2014 uncommitted,
allowing for a discussion between
the Governor and legislators next
session on how to best use the pro-
jected one-time funds.
This year, we can consider pro-
posals about new growth and new
ideas. But as we go forward, its
crucial that we maintain a struc-
turally-balanced budget based on
conservative revenue estimates,
the Governor said. If we dont, we
risk a return to an era of ongoing
expenses exceeding ongoing rev-
enues. I have not recommended
that we spend every last dollar
just as the Legislature did not ap-
propriate every last dollar in
March when the 2012 session
ended.
Among highlights of the Gover-
nors proposed Fiscal Year 2014
budget, which begins July 1, 2013,
and ends June 30, 2014:
K-12 education would receive a
3 percent ongoing increase
The Board of Regents would re-
ceive an ongoing 3.2 percent in-
crease
The four technical institutes
would receive a 3 percent ongoing
increase
Medicaid providers would re-
ceive an ongoing 3 percent increase
State employees would receive
a 3 percent ongoing increase
Gov. Daugaards FY2014 budget
proposal, totaling $4.112 billion,
would use general tax revenues of
$1.323 billion, $1.699 billion in fed-
eral funds, and $1.090 billion of
other state revenue sources.
My proposed budget heeds the
principles to which I have been
true to every year: Ongoing rev-
enue pays for ongoing expenses,
one-time funds pay for one-time ex-
penses, and reserve funds are used
only for emergencies, the Gover-
nor said.

Lodge #153.
Welcoming State Grand Master
Jack Hantz, Belle Fourche, as
guest speaker were District Master
Doug Thorson, Philip, Wall Master
Grant Shearer, and other attending
Freemasons.
Hantz acknowledged the absence
of some district members, particu-
larly from the Martin lodge, who
were participating in the annual
Martin parade of lights. Martin,
though, will host next years dis-
trict meeting.
Hantz restated the hierarchy of
Masonic responsibility of family,
job, then the lodge. Family first,
always, said Hantz.
My obligation is to accept the re-
sponsibility to travel all over the
state, and neighboring states, to
represent you and all Masons,
said Hantz. With a little over 5,000
Masons in South Dakota, We have
decided to do our best to keep the
brothers together and increase our
members. The Grand Lodge meet-
ing this year will be family ori-
ented. We are working on
scholarships for the kids and giving
to charities. Weve got to keep our
roots growing.
One of the most community ori-
ented programs supported by Ma-
sons is the South Dakota Child
Identification Program (CHIP). A
personal identification package is
given to parents of participating
children. The packets includes a
photo, fingerprints, DNA swab,
and an audio/visual recording of
their child.
Im a 100 percent believer in
getting the older teenage girls in-
volved in the CHIP program. Its
not just for little kids, said Grant.
If you can get in with the school,
it really helps. We did our last
CHIP program on parent/teacher
day, said Thorson.
Hantz praised the public accessi-
bility and internal record keeping
by Masons by computers and the
Internet. Computers are a great
thing. All this paperwork going
back and forth will stop. Its all at
your fingertips, said Hantz. The
South Dakota Masonic website is
mygrandlodge.org.
The district meeting concluded
with a 50-year pin presentation to
Ike Dale, Philip. Dale entered Ma-
sonry in May 1961, and was raised
to Master Mason in March 1962.
I have a lot of stories. Its been
quite an experience, said Dale.
My friends, neighbors and broth-
ers, its been a fun trip so far.
Thorson noted that the year Dale
served as master of the Philip
lodge, 1969, was the year Thorson
was born.

Recognition Ike Dale was presented his 50-year pin during the
District 15 meeting of South Dakota Freemasons, December 1, in Philip.

The Philip Area wrestling squad
proved they have what it takes
when they participated against 35
top-ranked schools from four states
at the Rapid City Invitational
Wrestling Tournament
Philip Area stood in the 11th
place slot at the end of day on Fri-
day, December 7. The top four from
the first days action were Pierre,
Gillette, Wyo., Bismarck, N.D. and
Rapid City Central. At the end of
day two, December 8, Philip Area
finished sixth and well ahead of
other B division schools.
While head coach Matt Donnelly
is pleased with how the team
placed, he said he knows they can
do better. He said had they had just
one pin more they would have had
the fifth place spot. But it was a
good accomplishment, he said.
Donnelly noted that the team
cannot have kids not placing.
Those kids, he said, will have to
pick it up some. Everything could
be better in all aspects, he said.
They did not have wrestlers at
the 126 and heavyweight divisions.
Donnelly said Philip Area sent
some of the younger wrestlers to a
middle school tournament where
they could hone their skills more.
The top 10 teams at tourna-
ments end were Pierre in the first
slot with 215.5 points, Rapid City
Central 181.5, Gillette, Wyo.
175.5, Bismarck, N.D. 163,
Huron 140, Philip 139.5, Wind-
sor, Colo. 135.5, Spearfish/Lead-
Deadwood 128, Powell, Wyo.
108, and tied for 10th were Rapid
City Stevens and Aberdeen Cen-
tral 105.

were South Dakota schools from

The Kadoka Lady Kougars bas-
ketball team opened their 2012-13
season on Thursday, Dec. 6 at
home against the White River Lady
Tigers. Both teams came out ready
to play and put out a hard first
half.
The first quarter had Kwincy
Ferguson scoring 2 baskets and a
free throw, Marti Herber with one
basket and a free throw, Shaley
Herber with two buckets and Tay-
lor Merchen with a three-pointer.
This put the Lady Kougars up by
two with a score 15-13 at the end of
the first quarter.
The girls got into foul trouble in
the first half, which put White
River in the double bonus early in
the second quarter. The girls shoot-
ing also slowed down in the second
quarter. However, Taylor fired up
the game with another three-
pointer, Katie Lensegrav had two
buckets and Shaley with one bas-
ket. White River out scored Kadoka
16 to 9, giving White River the lead
at halftime 29-24.
After some halftime adjust-
ments, the Lady Kougars came out
strong, playing an intense third
quarter. Kwincy had a good third
quarter, posting up under the bas-
ket and drawing the fouls. She had
4 baskets and was 5/9 at the free
throw line. Katie added a basket,
Raven Jorgensen had a basket and
a free throw and Tessa Stout hit a
three-pointer. The end of the third
quarter had Kadoka in the lead 45-
35. Kadoka was also able to keep
their fouls down.
The Kougars were able to keep
the momentum going and the fouls
down through the fourth quarter.
Kwincy added four more points,
Taylor added two buckets and a
three-pointer, which gave her three
for the night.
At the final buzzer, the Kougars
came out on top, 56-44. Kwincy
Ferguson lead the game with 22
points, one steal and four re-
bounds. Taylor Merchen had 13
points and six steals. Katie Lenseg-
rav had six points, one steal and
five rebounds. Shaley Herber also
had 6 points and 4 rebounds. Marti
Herber had three points, five
steals, and three rebounds. Raven
Jorgensen had three points, two
steals and one rebound and Tessa
Stout had three points, three
steals, and three rebounds.
The girls have been working
hard in practice, so it was nice to
see them work as a TEAM, doing
their jobs and contributing to the
win.

Twas the night before
Christmas and all through
the bar, all the patrons
were wondering,
should I drive my car?
Hi, Im Trooper Jason Hamar
The fact is, alcohol and other
drugs do impair your driving.
Over half of South Dakotas
traffic deaths last year
were alcohol related.
So if your wondering
whether to drive after
drinking too much,
Dont.
Play it safe.
Designate a sober driver or
take a cab or call a friend.
Prevent drunk and
drugged driving.
Youll be glad you did.

Fitting Exercise into
the Holidays
Between busy family activities,
shopping trips, attending holiday
parties, and cold weather, it often
becomes difficult to keep up with
your daily exercise routine during
the holiday season. Taking a break
from your fitness program during
the holidays will only leave you
with added pounds and more
stress when the New Year rolls
around.
The problem is that most Amer-
icans dont ever lose the weight
they gain during the winter holi-
days, even if it is only one pound.
Physical activity can be your secret
weapon to combat the delicious,
tempting foods that seem to be
everywhere through the holiday
season.
According to the Centers for Dis-
ease Control and Prevention
(www.cdc.gov), adults need 150
minutes of moderate (brisk walk-
ing) physical activity or 75 min-
utes of vigorous (jogging or
running) physical activity per
week. Both types of activities
should include muscle-strengthen-
ing activities on 2 or more days
each week.
Feeling stressed and over-
whelmed is a common challenge
during the holidays. Physical ac-
tivity decreases your chances of be-
coming depressed, helps you feel
better about yourself, aids in sleep-
ing well at night, and assists you
with moving around more easily.
Fit exercise into your daily rou-
tine by getting your home ready
for the holidays. Decorating the
tree, hanging up holiday lights and
cleaning your house will burn calo-
ries and youll feel productive.
Some individuals look forward
to watching holiday TV specials.
Theres approximately 20 minutes
of commercials during an hour
long show. Use commercial time
for some quick exercise such as sit-
ups, toe touches, or pedal a sta-
tionary bike.
Be flexible during the holidays.
If you arent able to fit in your
usual work out due to an office
party, fit a brisk walk into your
lunch hour. To increase your walk-
ing distance, park your vehicle in
the lots farthest away from the
store. Try power walking while
walking from store to store.
To assist with time manage-
ment, try combining exercise and
family time. As an example, try
building a snow fort or snow man
with your children. A sledding trip
is an opportunity for quality time

Private Applicator
Certification Meetings
Details are coming together for
the 2013 Private Applicator Certi-
fication Meetings across South
Dakota. Once all of the meetings
are confirmed, they will be posted
on the SDSU Pesticide Applicator
Training website: http://www.sd-
state.edu/ps/extension/pat/ (click
on Private Applicator Training
Dates), and www.igrow.org. Dates,
times and locations of the meetings
in south-central SD are listed in
the calendar below.
For at least one more year, post-
cards including the website where
meetings will be held will be
mailed from SDSU campus to pri-
vate applicators whose certification
expires in December, 2012. Re-
gional Extension Centers will also
be mailing postcards to private ap-
plicators in their areas of the state,
listing PAT meetings in their re-
gion. First-time private applicators
and those who let their certifica-
tion expire for a year or more can
also be certified by attending one of
the certification meetings.
If anyone is unable to attend a
certification meeting, a take home
test can be completed to become
certified as a Private Applicator.
The take home tests are available
at your closest Regional Extension
Center, and/or in some cases, your
local Extension office. Whether at-
tending a certification meeting or
completing a take home test, appli-
cators should bring a photo ID.
At each of the PAT meetings in
the calendar below, we will be cov-
ering the required topics related to
Private Applicator Certification,
but spending much of the time on
current and emerging pest control
issues you can use in your opera-
tion. Depending on the location, we
may cover wheat diseases, prairie
dog management, weed control, in-
sect management, etc. Producers
whose PAT certification is not up
for renewal are also welcome to at-
tend part or all of these meetings.
If you have any questions, con-
tact your closest Regional Exten-
sion Center, or County Extension
office for the details of other meet-
ings held in the area. Addresses
and telephone numbers for the Ex-
tension Centers and County offices
can be found at the SDSU Exten-
sion website:
http://www.sdstate.edu/sdces/ or
http://igrow.org/about/our-experts/.

with your loved ones. Hauling the
kids up a hill a few times could pro-
vide you with a beneficial workout.
Shoveling snow for 15 minutes
counts as physical activity. Remem-
ber to lift with your arms and
thighs and keep your back straight
to prevent straining your back.
Consider shoveling while its snow-
ing and then again when its done,
to get twice the workout. Itll also
be easier than shoveling it all at
once.
Strive to meet the time-crunched
holiday season head on by prioritiz-
ing your daily tasks and planning
ahead to find time to exercise.
