Integrated Mathematics Course 3 Final Semester Project:

DOOMSDAY PREPPERS
PART FIVE:

Choose the scenario that corresponds to your responses from Part One of this project. Make sure to read carefully and show your work. Scenario 1: Spread of Infectious Disease
Suppose there were 100 people exposed to an infectious disease at Kennedy International Airport (New York City). There were 25 people who traveled to OHare International Airport (Chicago), 56 people who traveled to LAX International Airport (Los Angeles), and 19 people who traveled to Orlando International Airport. If the disease spreads at a rate of 15.65% every 30 minutes, how long will it take for 1,000,000 to be infected in each city?

Scenario 2: Mass Power Loss

Suppose some type of cataclysmic event occurred and it wiped out the power of 1500 residents in that immediate area. The effects of this event will gradually cause a mass power loss and there is no way to predict how far out it will extend. If power is being lost at a rate of 59.74% each hour, how long will it take for all of North Carolinas residents to be without power? (Use the 2011 US Census Bureau estimate of 9,656,401 North Carolina residents.)

Scenario 3: Spread of Ash/Harmful Chemicals in the Air

Suppose that somewhere along the East coast a harmful chemical has been released in the air (due to large scale volcanic eruption or a nuclear/bio-chemical attack). If the chemical starts out by contaminating a radius of 20 miles and spreads at rate of 17% of the atmosphere each hour, how long will it take for the chemicals to reach the West coast? (Assume that the distance from the East coast to the West coast is about 3,400 miles.)

Scenario 4: Contamination of Water Supply

Suppose that a water reclamation plant in a large urban area was attacked so that the entire water supply was contaminated. If there are 5000 main lines and the rate of contamination is about 4.75% every half hour, how long will it take for the number of contaminated lines to quadruple?

Scenario 5: Zombie Attacks

Suppose that 75 people are exposed to a chemical that causes the reanimation of a dead body. The only way to spread the effects is through human bodily fluids. If the group of zombies goes on a rampage and each of them attacks 3 people every hour, how long will it take for the number of infected humans to reach 25,000?

Scenario 6: Rate of Flooding/Fire Spreading

Suppose that a natural disaster occurs and it causes flash flooding and/or wildfires. If it starts out covering 20 miles of land and it is spreading at a rate that covers 36.25% of the remaining land every 15 minutes, how long will it take for the water/fire to cover 500 miles?

Scenario 7: Economic Downfall

Suppose that a major event occurs that totally wipes out the value of our economic system. If the value of a dollar decreases by a rate of .6% every month, how long will it take for our money to be worthless? Your family has been anticipating this event, so you all have been accumulating silver to barter with in the event paper money becomes useless. According to http://cointrackers.com/current-price-silver.php, the $1.00 Silver Eagle is worth $33.31 and contains 1 troy oz. of silver. If the value of silver is increasing by 13.7% every year, how long will it take for its value to reach $40?
