Special issue on physicochemical approaches in catalysis, photocatalysis and surface photochemistry Preface

First and foremost, I would like to thank all of my colleagues, collaborators, staff, students and graduate students, as well as my former supervisors, Prof. Yutaka Kubokawa (Professor Emeritus, Osaka Prefecture University, Japan), Dr. Keith U. Ingold (National Research Council, Canada) and Prof. Michel Che (Universit Pierre et Marie Curie, France), for their great instruction and support. It was only thanks to everyone's great collaboration and efforts that I could receive the prestigious award of the Chemical Society of Japan Award for Creative Work for 2003. During the one-day conference held in commemoration of this event, I was very happy to welcome many friends, not only from Japan but also from abroad, to join me in celebration. Four of the editorial board members of this international journal, Research on Chemical Intermediates, which I serve as editor, were also present, i.e. Profs. Che, Coluccia, Park and Domen. This Special Issue is a collection not only of the presentations at this commemorative event, but also includes contributions from many of my close colleagues and friends, each respected and famous scientists in their respective fields, throughout the world. I sincerely hope that our scientific ties and good friendships will continue long into the future to produce worthwhile and enduring research which will contribute not only to science and technology in heterogeneous catalysis, but also to photocatalysis to improve the environment. Thank you very much. September 2003 MASAKAZU ANPO Professor Osaka Prefecture University E-mail: anpo @ok.chem.osakafu-u.ac.jp
