I dont know about you, but every two yearswhen
the Olympic Summer & Winter Games roll aroundI
suddenlydevelopaverystronginterestinsomeofthe
more obscure sports that feature in the Games. For
example, during the Winter Games while everyone is
watching is the gure skang and skiing, I prefer to
watchagoodgameofcurling,andduringtheSummer
Games I mostly watch the fencing and rowing rather
thanswimmingandathlecs.

Which just goes to show that all of us will have a

whole dierent range of interests, acvies and
likesand they are part of what makes us who we
are.

The same goes for our life in the Church. No two

people will be aracted to the same spirituality, like
the same form of liturgy, have the same devoonal
life. It would be boring if we did. The diculty arises
however when living in a community such as ours

The point during the celebraon of Mass when the
bread and wine is brought forth to the altar is
commonlyreferredtoastheOertory,duringwhich
wesingtheoertoryhymn.

To use the term oertory suggests that this is the

part of the Mass when the sacrice is oered,
whereasitisduringtheEuchariscPrayerthattheself
oeringofJesusisrecalledandrepresented.Weare
joined to Christs sacrice when, as members of the
Body of Christ, the Church, we oer the consecrated
breadandwinetotheFather.

That is why the word oertory was replaced in the

MissalbythetermPreparaonoftheAltarandGis
aer the Second Vacan Council. This tle clearly
describes the purpose of the riteto prepare the
altar,thegisandtheassemblyfortheoeringofthe
whole Church that takes place during the Eucharisc
Prayer.

In the early years of Chrisanity, the faithful brought

with them bread and wine to be used in the
celebraon of the Eucharist. These gis were
collected by the deacons during the liturgy and what
was not used for communion was given to the poor
andneedy.Eventuallythisritebecameaprocessionof
all the people who brought forward gis such as oil,
candles, wheat and grapes in addion to the bread
andwine.

TheprocessionofgisdisappearedduringtheMiddle
Ages because the change from using leavened bread
at Mass and because of a decline in the number of
people receiving communion. The current Order of
Mass has reinstated the ritual in which
representaves of the assembly bring forward bread
andwineaswellasothergisforthepoororforthe
Church.

TheGeneral Instrucon of the Roman Missalsaysthis

abouttheProcessionofGis:
The oerings are then brought forward. It is
praiseworthy for the bread and wine to be presented
by the faithful. Even though the faithful no longer
bring from their own possessions the bread and wine
intended for the liturgy as in the past, nevertheless
the rite of carrying up the oerings sll retains its
force and its spiritual signicance. It is well also that
money or other gis for the poor or for the Church,
brought by the faithful or collected in the church,
should be received. These are to be put in a suitable
place but away from the Eucharisc table. (GIRM,
73)
