Product Description
The MPS1000 is a WAN-LAN Data Communication Server that attaches to your local-area
network to provide wide-area connectivity. A single MPS communication server can support a
number of WAN protocols, each of which can be accessed simultaneously by multiple clients.
The MPS1000 is a robust WAN-over-IP communications server that is ideal for bringing WAN
gateway connectivity to your local area network. It provides two 10/100 Mb Ethernet ports and
four, eight, or 16 high-speed WAN serial ports, making it ideal as an intelligent WAN/LAN
bridge, WAN/LAN gateway device, or a remote WAN connectivity server. Using SNMP
management, any computer and/or workstation equipped with TCP/IP on the LAN can access
information from the MPS communications server.
The MPS1000 is designed to preserve the user's software investment; all of Performance
Technologies WAN Communications products enable applications developed on one to be
moved to any of the other WAN products. Its modular design supports virtually any
synchronous serial communications protocol.

The MPS1000 is enabled with the Linux-based NexusWare Core development environment.
With the wide acceptance and extensive number of publicly available applications and
protocols, available for Linux, system developers can bring sophisticated systems to market in
a much shorter time.
Equipped with a well-defined API, the integrated protocol suite from Performance Technologies
reduces time to market by eliminating unnecessary development efforts at the hardware/
protocol level. The depth and flexibility of the protocols offered by Performance Technologies
for our WAN hardware products enable development engineers to proceed directly to
integration and application development.
Performance Technologies' suite of WAN communications protocols provides complete WAN
connectivity solutions for Frame Relay, HDLC, LAPD, X.25 and Radar Receiver/SBSI
protocols. Operating system support for the MPS1000 includes Solaris/UNIX, Windows
XP, and Linux.
Feature Rich Hardware
The MPS1000 is designed as a fully programmable communications system capable of
sustaining high data rates for a variety of protocols used in synchronous communications.
The MPS1000 utilizes single or dual Motorola MPC8255 PowerQUICC II communications
microprocessors. In a dual configuration, one of the processors is configured as the Master and
the other is configured as the Slave. The default mode of operation uses the Slave processor
with its CPU core disabled, leaving the CPM active for serial communication.
Two external Ethernet PHYs are offered to provide Ethernet redundancy. The MPS1000 will
automatically switch over to the secondary Ethernet PHY if link is lost on the primary PHY.
The MPS1000 supports eight or sixteen identical, individually programmable, synchronous
serial I/O ports. The ports are capable of electrically interfacing to V.35, RS442 (EIA530 or
RS449) and RS232 equipment. Each port is brought out in groups of four to an 80-pin
connector that supports Performance Technologies quad connection hydra line of serial I/O
cables.
A four-port version of the MPS1000 is capable of interfacing to EIA530 and RS232 equipment.
Each port is brought out to a DB25 male connector on the rear of the unit. No hydra cables are
required.
With rack-mountable or freestanding configurations, the MPS1000 provides the power to
handle full load network traffic, and communicates via TCP/IP with clients on the LAN.

an Ethernet crossover cable
the proper software
See Table 2-1, PTI Part Numbers for MPS1000 Versions and Accessories on page 19 for
product part numbers.
Configuring and Installing the CPC358s
After receiving the second CPC358 and the 8-port RTM358, use the following steps to
configure and install both cards.
Follow these steps to configure the CPC358:
1. Remove the filler panel on the front of the MPS1000 by unscrewing the captive screws.
2. Remove the existing CPC358 following the steps described in Removing a CPC358 on page 36.
3. Inspect the second CPC358. If it is new, it may come with protective plastic covers on the latches
captive screws. These will need to be removed before the card can be installed.
Note: It is important to remember if you are updating an 8-port MPS1000 to a 16-port
MPS1000, the SW1 switch on both CPC358s must be set properly for the running
conditions of the MPS1000. Further information on setting SW1 can be found on DIP
Switch Settings on page 43.
4. Set the SW1-1 switch to the Closed (ON) position on both the new CPC358 and on the existing
CPC358 in the MPS1000.
5. Insert the CPC358s following the steps described in Installing a CPC358 on page 37.
Installing the RTM358
Adding an additional CPC358 to an 8-port MPS1000 during the conversion to 16-port requires
the addition of the corresponding RTM358 for the second CPC358. The steps for adding the
second RTM are as follows:
Follow these steps to insert an RTM358 into an MPS1000:
1. Inspect the 8-port RTM358. If it is new, it may come with protective plastic covers on the latches
captive screws. These will need to be removed before the card can be installed.
2. Remove the empty filler panel on the rear of the MPS1000 chassis by unscrewing the captive screws.

pressed in order to open the latches.
4. Holding the RTM by its latches, align the RTM in the MPS1000s card guides.
5. Slide the RTM gently straight into the empty slot, keeping the card level. Do not apply too much
pressure, particularly if you feel resistance. You should feel the pin connectors on the rear of the RTM
meet the backplane.
6. Continue to slide the RTM into the slot until the latches touch the extrusions on either side of the slot.
7. Press down on the latches to guide the RTM the rest of the way into the slot and lock it into place. You
will hear a click as the latches are closed and the RTM is set into place.
8. After insertion, tighten the captive screws on the latches.
9. ENET B (Ports B) should be connected using the supplied Crossover Cable. ENET A (Ports A)
should not be connected with a Crossover Cable. Using the Crossover Cable only applies to the 16-
port version.

Configuration Settings
Overview
The proper configuration of the MPS1000 depends on whether you are installing one or two
CPC358 cards. One CPC358 card is needed for the 4-port and 8-port configurations, while a
second CPC358 is needed for the 16-port configuration. Installation of the CPC358 for any
configuration is the same as described in the previous chapter.
Topics covered in this chapter include:
Jumper and Switch Location on page 41
Jumper Settings on page 43
DIP Switch Settings on page 43
Jumper and Switch Location
Proper configuration of the MPS1000 requires that you configure jumpers K5 and K38 and set
DIP switches SW1-1 and SW1-2 on the CPC358. The location of these jumpers and DIP
switches on the CPC358 are shown in Figure 6-1, K5, K38 Jumpers and SW1 Switch Location
on the CPC358 on page 42.
For more information on the location of all jumpers and switches on the CPC358, refer to the
CPC358 Octal Synchronous Serial Communications Processor Hardware Manual.
