For A-B-C News, Im Sareen Jebejian. Here are the latest headlines. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is implementing an odd-even gas rationing system due to recent events with Hurricane Sandy, in select counties throughout the state to guarantee all residents access to fuel. This rationing system will likely move into mid next week, and people are encouraged only to drive when necessary to prevent excessive oil use.

ANNCR:

Politicians in Puerto Rico are debating the possibility of becoming the 51st state. In conjunction with the presidential elections, the U-S territory voted on Tuesday and the majority favored statehood for the first time in 45 years. However, officials are assessing whether it was a true vote for statehood. Rutgers Anthropology Professor Yarimar [YAHrih-mahr] Bonilla suggests that the result was a vote against the current government.

BONILLA:

If you take into account the number of people who want to continue with the status that they have now and the amount of people who voted for an option other than statehood, then statehood doesnt have a majority vote.

Gay marriage is officially legal in Maine, Maryland, and Washington. According to officials in all three states, wedding spending is likely to bring in more than 166 million dollars. This additional spending will sustain businesses, boost state revenue, and create new jobs.

ANNCR:

A recent astronomical study has found a possible giant earth orbiting in the habitable zone of star H-D 4-0-3-0-7. It seems that earth-like temperatures are possible, which means the planet could have liquid water on its surface, a probable qualification for life. Its about seven times the size of Earth, though its still too soon to determine whether it could be an ideal habitat for life. More data collection should settle the argument.

Researchers in the United Kingdom are calling attention to symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes in children. Diabetes U-K Chief Executive Barbara Young says the disease has some very obvious symptoms often overlooked. Symptoms include the need to urinate often, drinking frequently, quick weight loss, and feeling very tired. If not treated, a child can become seriously ill and die. Parents should be aware of the symptoms and should contact specialists if they have questions.

In entertainment news, comedian Neil Casey is now on the writing staff for N-B-Cs Saturday Night Live. Casey has worked with the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre as a performer and comedic improv teacher. He will be writing sketches for S-N-L and will join the ranks of another U-C-B alum, Josh Patten.
