The Twelve Signs of The Zodiac

THE VERTEX The vertex represents an important life instruction. The vertex mostly falls between the fifth and eighth houses. Its exact point varies depending on the individual's birth date, time and place. The vertex and the anti-vertex (opposite point of the vertex) indicate karmic events in the life of an individual regarding cause and effect. Be careful of what you wish for, as it just might come true when the votex and anti-vortex come into play. PLANETARY MOVEMENTS
DIRECT MOTION: Refers to the forward movement of planets as seen from Earth. Direct motion allows an outward expression of a planet's energy, as indicated by house, sign placement and its aspects. RETROGRADE MOTION: Refers to a planet that appears to be moving backwards as seen from the Earth. The energy of a retrograde planet is less assertive and more internalized, sometimes reversing situations and changing our feelings and regular activities. The Sun and Moon can never be in retrograde motion. STATIONARY MOTION:A planet is said to "make a station" when it seems to stop moving. A planet has a greater influence in the horoscope when it is stationary because its energy is concentrated and focused at the degree of the zodiac it occupies.

The Elements
The four elements: Fire, Water, Air and Earth are based on temperment, as seen in a person's primary response to situation, relationships and most things in general. Each sign is matched with one of the elements according to whether the primary response associated with that sign is bassically: to act (physical/Earth), to gain something (purposeful/Fire), to analyze (intellectual/Air), or to feel (emotional/Water).

QUALITIES OF FIRE: Active, masculine, spontanious, quick, initiating, initializing, vitalizing and energetic. Fire is an element with two purposes: (1) It is an expression of spiritual energy and the determination of the spirit. (2)It purifies, burns and destroys the old so that the new may emerge. It is a the element of transmutation and regeneration. To pass through fire is symbolic of transcending the human condition. The direction or cardinal point of fire is south. QUALITIES OF WATER: Passive, feminine, receptive, sustaining, subconscious, creative and generative.

Water symbolizes the infinate realm of possibilities, which precede all form and creation. It is limitless and immortal. The direction or cardinal point of water is west. QUALITIES OF AIR: Active, masculine, intellectual, ethereal, abstract and communicative. Air is related to the creative breath of life, therefore, speech as well as scent and smell. Air is a volatile element which is considered the offspring of the parental elements of fire and water. It is the reconciler between the rival elements of fire (male) and water(female). Air also aludes to the human intellect and thought processes, which are quick, changeable, and abstract. The direction or cardinal point is east. QUALITIES OF EARTH: Passive, feminine, solid, materialization, physical, stable, slow-moving and grounded. Earth represents the physical, materialized universe in which we live. Earth is the daughter of fire and water, just as air is the son. This elemnt encompasses all activities of productivity, fertility, growth and regeneration. Earth is the fourth element and the result of the combined actions of the other three. The direction or cardinal point of earth is north.

CONJUNCTION (0 Degrees)
Keywords: Emphasis, Intensity A conjunction occurs when two planets are from 0 to 7 degrees of each other. Their energies combine or reinforce each other, giving emphasis to the planet's expression. A conjunction can be favorable or unfavorable depending on the planets involved and whether or not these planets are harmonious or opposite in character.

inharmonious signs. The planets will support each other in an external sense, but won't share any true inner communication. However, the expression of a semi-sextile indicates that one must give attention to contrasting energies so that each functions effectively.

SEMI-SQUARE (450 Degrees)


Keyword: Friction A semi-square is a minor, unfavorable aspect in which the planets involved are 45 degrees apart plus or minus 3 degrees (42-48 degree orb). The semi-square is similar to a square, but the influence is only a minor frustrating aspect.

SEXTILE (60 Degrees)


Keyword: Oppotunity A sextile is considered to be a major, favorable aspect in which two planets are 60 degrees apart plus or minus 5 degrees (55-65 degree orb). The planets involved are of the same in gender, quality, and functions harmoniously. Sextiles in a chart show where opportunities are presented in life. They represent circumstances that when acted upon can lead to achievement and success of a goal.

QUINTILE (72 Degrees)


Keyword: Creativity A quintile is considered to be a minor, favorable aspect in which two planets are 72 degrees apart plus or minus 5 degrees (67-77 degree orb). The quintile is an aspect that represents self-expression, creativity, and fulfillment of personal potential.

SQUARE (90 Degrees)

Keywords: Challenge, Obstacle A square is considered to be a major, unfavorable aspect in which the planets involved are 90 degrees apart, plus or minus 7 degrees (83-97 degree orb). In this aspect, the energies of the planets are clash with one another, each trying to make the other to conform to it's manner of expression. Squares in a chart indicate where you will need to apply effort and determination to achieve your goals. The Elements

ORB: The space in the chart wheel measured in degrees, between planets and points, by which an aspect may vary from exactness and still remain effective. PROGRESSION: A method of advancing the planets and points of a natal chart to a particular time after birth.
