Another year has come and gone boy, wasnt THAT fast?! About this time of the month of December in the 50s we were looking forward to our basketball tournament and our Christmas vacation. And the Christmas dance was our sendoff! Do you remember this one? (photo taken from our 1957 Reflector) . . .

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

This will be a little shorter than usual this month, for several reasons. First, I am dead up against the very liberal deadline given me by Marilyn, our over-the-top Editor-in-Chief. Im at that point, in part because of some shenanigans pulled by my son-in-law. All I can say is that execution must be an effective determent against murder; else, Id have been gassed some time ago! )_(**&^*&)(&)!!!!!!!!! (Notice, no segue!): This ought to be my Thanksgiving blurb, as I have received three gifts for which IK am overwhelmingly blessed, honored and humbled. Every come back through Customs into this communist state, I give thanks for the time Ive been given in Lees Summit both last century and, so far, in this one. I figure LS and its people gave me so much in the 20th, and now I am having a chance to give back a little here in the 21st. Thanks to each of you for your part in that process. Second, on the 26,663rd day of my life, I was given the only bday present* which has ever brought a tear to my eyes..followed by a great cheer from all of my family. Thirty-three of our Classmates made contributions to the Paul/Class of 57 scholarship on behalf of your ol pal. To each of you, thanks so much! This was one of the most moving gifts I have ever received. What a hoot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And Jim Brockman sent me a treasure Mr. Brockmans hand-written journal, written in the last several months of his life. Im going to help figure what to do with this little gem. I hope to share excerpts from it with you in the near future. What a hoot! And, dont forget to mark your calendar for the weekend surrounding April 13. Cookie baking at Christmas is a tradition nearly as dear to our hearts as old Saint Nick. Share the cheer of the season with the ones you love. RASPBERRY-ALMOND BAR COOKIES Diabetic-friendly rich flavor (Exchanges: 1 starch, fat) 2 cups all-purpose flour cup Equal Spoonful or Granulated* (*May substitute 12 packets Equal) 1/8 teas salt 8 Tbls cold stick butter or margarine, (cut into pieces 2 Tbls water 1 teas grated lemon peel 1 jar (10oz) seedless raspberry Spreadable fruit 3 Tbls toasted sliced almonds 1 egg

Combine flour, Equal and salt in medium bowl. Cut in butter with pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in egg, water and lemon peel. Mixture will be crumbly. Press mixture evenly onto bottom of well-sprayed 8x8-inch pan. Bake in preheated 350 oven for 12 to 15 minutes or until edges of crust are lightly browned. Remove pan from oven and spread raspberry fruit over top. Sprinkle with almonds. Return to oven and bake an additional 10 to 12 minutes or until fruit is bubbly. Cool completely on wire rack. Cut into bars. Store in airtight containers at room temperature. CHOCOLATE COVERED CHERRY COOKIES

cup butter or margarine 1 cup sugar 1 egg 1-1/2 teas vanilla extract 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour cup baking cocoa teas salt

teas baking powder teas baking soda 48 maraschino cherries, blotted dry FROSTING: 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips cup sweetened condensed milk 1 to 3 teas maraschino cherry juice

In a mixing bowl, cream together butter and sugar until fluffy; beat in egg and vanilla. Combine dry ingredients and gradually add to sugar mixture (batter will be very firm). Shape into 48 balls about 1 round and place on ungreased cookie sheets. Push one cherry halfway into each ball. FOR FROSTING: Melt chocolate chips in milk in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly. Remove from heat; add cherry juice and stir until smooth. Spoon 1 teaspoon of frosting over each cherry (frosting will spread over cookie during baking). Bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes. Cool on wire racks

Holiday Sharing
Twas the holiday season and in the spirit most apt gifts of Kahlua were being wrapped Whip up these special treats, put into clear glass jars and pop a big glittery gold bow on the top. Makes a really nice hostess gift. Merry Christmas! Sharon

Kahlua Caramel Popcorn

2 quarts popped corn cup Kahlua 1 cup sugar 2 tbs. cider vinegar 3 tbs. butter cup cashews

After popping corn, keep it warm in low oven. Heat Kahlua, sugar, and vinegar to boiling, stirring until sugar dissolves. Add butter and boil just to hard crack stage (300). Pour over warm corn, stirring to coat evenly, adding nuts. Cool Can be stored up to several weeks in airtight container, but do not refrigerate.

Kahlua Spiced Peaches

2 cans (29oz ea) cling peach halves cup Kahlua cup brown sugar (packed) cup tarragon white wine vinegar 2 sticks cinnamon 3 thin 4 strips each orange & lemon peel

Drain 1-1/2 cups syrup from peaches into saucepan. Add Kahlua, sugar, vinegar, cinnamon and peels. Simmer for 5 minutes. Pour over drained peaches. Cool. Refrigerate. Will keep several weeks. Makes 12 to 14 spiced peaches

In 1951, the City of Lee's Summit bought its first "modern" fire-fighting pumper. The 1951 Howe was capable of pumping 500 gallons per minute. This pumper served the citizens of Lee's Summit with distinction, fighting many major and historic fires between early 1952 until its retirement in 1984. For the last fifteen years, a local resident had owned the pumper and stored it in his barn. In the interest of preserving the history of the Lee's Summit Fire Department and the City of Lee's Summit, he has graciously offered to return it, at a very reasonable price, to its original home with the Lee's Summit Fire Fighters through Local 2195.

We are happy to report that individuals, businesses, and community groups saw the value of having and displaying this pumper and donated towards its purchase. Donations received above what was needed for the purchase will be used for refurbishing, storage, equipment, maintenance, and insurance.

One of the current uses of this antique fire truck is to bring Santa into Lees Summit for the annual Christmas tree lighting!

Robert L. Bob Beard, husband of Lee Ann Smith57

Robert L. Beard, 84, of Lees Summit, MO passed away on Dec. 4, 2012 at his home. Funeral service will be Fri Dec. 7, 2012 at the First Baptist Church of Lees Summit at 11am. Visitation will begin prior to the service at 9:30am. Burial at Lees Summit Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Lees Summit. Robert was born on Mar. 11, 1928 in Chamois, MO. He retired from the Navy as Chief Boatswains Mate after 20 years of service. He served in WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the start of the Vietnam War. After retiring from the Navy he worked as a fireman in Stillwater, OK. He then moved to the Kansas City area where he worked for the Lake City Arsenal for 20+ years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lees Summit, the bible fellowship class of Paul Voris, a life member of the VFW Post 5789, a life member of the Fleet Reserve Association, the American Legion, and a member of numerous Navy organizations. He was an avid bowler, fisherman, and he loved to hunt. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Bessie Beard, brothers Earl and Bill Beard, and sisters Marge Simons and Lillian Grubb. Survivors include his wife of 31 years Lee Ann Beard, Son Daniel Beard, daughter Edith Beard, step-daughter Kandra Blyler, grandsons Justin Blyler, Luke Cox, Joshua Rogers, and Jeremy Rogers, five great grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. Our thoughts and sympathies are with you, Lee Ann.

To the Class of 57: This class is populated with great people. When my husband, Ted, and I attended the 50th class reunion, it was a treasured weekend for both of us. Ted for the wonderful memories and the renewing of old friendships and for me the warmth that flowed from all of you. I thank you all for the love and support you gave to Ted and I thruout his illness You are all so very special and I would like to wish all of you a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR. Jerry & Geraldine sent this message along with the above photos . . . The middle of Oct. we drove to VA to visit our son, Steve, two granddaughters and one 4-yr-old great-granddaughter. Steve is a retired Marine and has a government job as project manager with the Dept. of Defense. They all live 20 miles or so from Washington, D.C. The drive was beautiful with all the fall colors and warm sunshine. We left there just before Sandy arrived. Got out just in time. They were without power a few days, wind and lots of rain, but were safe. Happy Holidays and Best wishes, Jerry & Geraldine So glad their family came thru it safely and all is well ! News update from Judy (Yeaman) DeTar Hicks . . .

Hello. Everytime I think I will send a note for the NL something takes up my time. The last six months have been a scramble, whirlwind, circus, fiasco, Wreck-of-the-Hesperus segment of time. And now, thank goodness, life starting to sift back into place. Starting with my visit in April, I accumulated eight weeks of Missouri time by the middle of August. During the three visits all that needed to be accomplished there happened. Finally my mother agreed to move to an Assisted Living Facility. It didn't happen in a timely manner...but it happened. AND she is happy there. (She had an episode of heart congestion 4 days after settling in) She realized how much she needed to be with others. I was able to get her house sold quickly....even though bureaucratic government intervention used up several weeks unnecessarily. There is only me to make sure she is taken care of...and she insists on staying in Missouri, so this seems the answer. Two days before needing to leave on one of the Missouri trips, we found out there had been an internal flood in the Arizona house. Unknown origin causing toilet to overflow--and continue to overflow---for A LONG TIME. By the time our friend discovered the mess, there was at least 2 inches over the whole house. We contacted a Pack-Up and Emergency Water company. Repair has so far has involved removing and replacing drywall 4 ft. up---through the entire house. Repainting, new carpet, new cabinets in kitchen and both baths. Furniture damage, and much beyond repair. We made a quick trip there in October to check-out progress on the repair. It isn't finished yet...but nearly. Certainly have an understanding and empathy for those on East Coast going through their horrible tragedy. Thank goodness ours was all clear water. We have insurance to cover most of the costs, yet it is a stressful happening. And in addition to all the above, a long planned kitchen remodel for the Denver cottage started first week in September....took 8 weeks. Yes that long. --My contractor went on vacation for 10 days during the middle. The house is small so every room was affected with 'kitchen clutter'. Those who have been

through remodel know the story. It is like moving...but not moving. The good part--I now have a functional, lovely kitchen. Worth the effort ? Yes. and Yes again. I did not however, grow any fonder of microwave dinners. Decided to do Thanksgiving in D.C. with my son and his wife. Spent a day with him at his school in Montgomery County...and a day with my daughter-in-law at her post at the Smithsonian where she is Collections Manager at the Post Office Museum. We did the Turkey Dinner Do at home of extended family. Entertained after dinner by 14 yr old delightful young lady who is concert quality pianist. While in D.C. went to see the movie Lincoln ...could there be a better location to view such a movie ?? I had been reading the book, so that added another dimension. My review of the movie--very good--worth seeing because of the acting..(the other segments that go into movie making were a bit over the top). Husband Bill going to AZ next week, I am holding off until 18 Dec. Am NOT looking forward to having to find everything and figure out what is missing and damaged beyond repair. Denver probably will have some snow before I leave, but I am used to that. Through all the happenings we have felt much gratitude that this year has found us well....Bill now cancer free for three years...and my extensive neck surgery seems to be holding well. "Merry Christmas" to everybody and "Happy New Year." I am enjoying my three young GC's during this time and look forward to a better year next month. During Thanksgiving I visited my step daughter, Kristy, and her family in Connecticut. During the four days I was there I walked 12 miles and loved every minute of it. She is a runner and on Turkey Day in Hartford they had a race. I enjoyed watching but not running. I love to walk and they have a very large dog. He walks you! My grandchildren are really looking forward to the holidays and are singing all the great songs that I grew up with. Thank you for the wonderful job you are doing in keeping us all connected. I love our newspaper and show it to all that are interested. They are amazed that at "our age" we still are connected. Friendship is so valuable. Happy holidays to all. Love, Pat (Callahan) Graham

Just a note to wish each and every one of you a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!! Has been a fast year. Tom and I are spending our anniversary and Christmas overnight at Ameristar (free room) so this is something we are looking forward to. This has been a good year for my son Rick, who finally found a job 3 months ago after searching for nearly 3 years. He still has his fence business also but likes his new job very well. Travels lot so he doesn't get to spend much time with his daughter as he did before. Again, hope each and every one of you have a Merry Christmas. May 2013 be a good year for all of us. In addition to those members of the LSHS Class of 57 who celebrate Christmas, I feel sure that others will be celebrating Hanukkah and perhaps other special days. And, we probably all celebrate New Year's! Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all Happy Holidays! I hope that 2013 will bring you and yours good health and much happiness! A special Thank You to Marilyn for all her work to keep us together through the newsletter that we all enjoy. And, to all those who support our class members as they face adversity as well as who congratulate their special shared joys, you are greatly appreciated. It may have been 55 (wow!) years since we left LSHS to conquer the world we knew then but we continue to be connected in a very different world than we knew then. Hi Marilyn & all of our LSHS gang. MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY HOLIDAY!!! Sandy & I just got back to Rockport (near Corpus Christi, Tx.) from Santa Fe after being w/Kristen, old friends & all of our annual Dr. appts. We had only planned to be gone 1 wk but unusual things were happening in my bod besides the return to 7,000' elevation! I tend to worry about everyone else & forget to pay closer attention to what is going on inside me. Had to repeat a few work ups that Dr. ordered & throw in a biopsy 'fore we had a "come to Jesus meeting"! All reports came back normal & I feel VERY grateful & relieved now that it is all over! So glad that Kris & old friends were there to work through the stress. Whew, did we beat it down from there + we can breathe better at sea level. 11

We have enjoyed this past 7 months in Rockport & have met some of the nicest people, mostly all Texans. Our RV park here is smaller & much more personal although we have plans to leave in a few days to return back down to South Padre Island. We know that some of these folks will remain lifetime friends. Hopefully this Spring we will begin our Calif. journey. Old friends & family "popped" in throughout the year, some as far away as Norway! One highlight for me was my 1st visit to Cape Cod last Sept. Kris & I flew in & stayed w/a friend that has a home there & did we have FUN. Another "Chick-trip"! Remember when we all came together, for some of us, for the very first time Sept., '53?!? I can still "see" some of your smiling faces. Thanx for being dear friends. We had & have something special there.......memories....................... Love to all of you - Karen & Sandy

Its been a fun year publishing the Hi-Life II and I hope to continue doing so for many years to come. We look forward to seeing you in 2013. Marilyn & Carl Williams Also, I want to thank all that helped me make Eds birthday surprise a real shocker! Thank you so very, very much for joining in our project. I didnt quite reach my goal of 100% Classmate participation, but we did add over $1,400 to the Scholarship Fund AND gave Ed the biggest surprise of his life outstanding! Never thought Id see the day when I could say Ed was speechless! Remember the beautiful Plaza Christmas lights back in the 50s? Wouldnt have been Christmas without them; and guess what . . . They are still shining brightly, as is the LSHS Class of 1957! (I used to have a sweatshirt with this picture on it)

Safety Patrol

Recently, the Lees Summit Police Department conducted an analysis of burglary reports taken in 2012. The analysis revealed that a large portion of residential burglaries involved the suspect making entry to the home using no force at all. This means that the suspect was able to enter the home normally through an open or unlocked door or window. In furtherance of our goal of partnering with the community to reduce crime, the Lees Summit Police Department wants to remind residents to be vigilant in monitoring all entrances to their homes including their garage door. As a by-product of our busy lifestyles it is often easy to leave a back door unlocked or a garage door open. In addition to locking doors, the Lees Summit Police Department encourages you to be alert in your neighborhood and report suspicious activity immediately to Police.

Never hesitate to call 911 ! Remember when we had the Safety Patrol at L.S. elementary school . . . boys were recruited to watch the crossings, stop traffic and help all the other kids cross the street, etc? My husband, Carl, was one of these. One day he was called into the Principals office (Im sure he was thinking what did I do now? To his surprise, he was told he was being made Captain of the Patrol! He told me the other day that he thinks that was the beginning of his interest in law enforcement and started him toward his ultimate career, which he loved!
