About This Document

1 Introduction
The HP Virtual Server Environment (VSE) is an integrated server offering that provides a flexible computing environment to help you maximize the use of your server resources. HP VSE Management Software provides the visualization, configuration, workload policy, and capacity planning tools to optimize the system resources in your VSE. Use HP Integrity Essentials Virtualization Manager to manage a pool of multi-OS, dynamically sizeable virtual servers. Each virtual server can grow and shrink, based on service-level objectives and business requirements, using HP Integrity Essentials Global Workload Manager and the various VSE partitioning and utility pricing technologies. Use HP Integrity Essentials Capacity Advisor to analyze your current server resource utilization and plan for future workload expansion. Refer to VSE Concepts and Terminology (page 11) for definitions of the key VSE terms and concepts.

VSE Management Software

The VSE Management Software encompasses a number of complementary components that enhance the functionality and flexibility of your Virtual Server Environment, including: HP Integrity Essentials Virtualization Manager Visualization software that allows you to see the systems in your VSE at various levels of detail. Virtualization Manager gives you the ability to inventory the VSE, and provides a central point from which to configure your server resources for optimum utilization. HP Integrity Essentials Global Workload Manager (gWLM) A multi-system, multi-OS workload manager that serves as an intelligent policy engine in the VSE. It simplifies the deployment of automated workload management policies across multiple HP-UX 11i and Linux servers and provides centralized monitoring and reporting and improved server utilization to assist in meeting your service-level objectives. HP Integrity Essentials Capacity Advisor Capacity analysis and planning software that allows you to optimize the workloads across your VSE for the highest utilization of server resources. Capacity Advisor provides scenario analysis to help optimize your current server resources and plan for future workload expansion. HP Integrity Virtual Machines Manager The graphical user interface for HP Integrity Virtual Machines. With VM Manager, you can visualize resources assigned to virtual machines. By providing a graphical view of virtual-to-physical network and storage, VM Manager lets you view all virtual machines in a VM Host, including resource utilization information. WBEM providers and other VSE agents Software that is installed on managed systems. One of these agents is the Utilization Provider that provides the real-time utilization metrics displayed by Virtualization Manager. The VSE Management Software is integrated with HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM), the central point of administration for complete resource-lifecycle management for multi-OS environments, and with Partition Manager for administration and configuration of nPartitions and complexes.

VSE Concepts and Terminology

The Virtual Server Environment brings together a number of HP virtualization technologies and products. To make effective use of the VSE Management Software, you need to become familiar with the following terms and their underlying concepts. cluster CMS Two or more systems configured together to host workloads, in a way that users are unaware that more than one system is hosting the workload. Central Management Server. The system in a management domain that executes the HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM) software. All central operations within HP SIM are initiated from this system.

compartment

An nPartition, virtual partition, virtual machine, or resource partition whose resources can be managed by gWLM. Multiple compartments are grouped to form a shared resource domain (SRD). The compartments all share the resources of the SRD. A compartment can be in only one SRD. Each compartment holds a workload. A gWLM policy can be applied to a workload in order to manage its resources by adjusting the resource allocation of its compartment. One or more hardware cabinets that are cabled together and that contain cells (circuit boards containing processors and memory), each of which can be assigned for exclusive use by an nPartition. A set of resource-demand readings made at regular intervals for some period of time. The demand profile of a workload, system, or complex is used for capacity planning. A server or other system that can be managed by HP SIM from a CMS. A CMS and its managed systems. A hardware partition in a complex. Each nPartition operates independently of other nPartitions and either runs a single instance of an operating system or is further divided into virtual partitions. An nPartition can be used as a compartment managed by gWLM. A collection of rules and settings that control workload resources. For example, a policy can indicate the minimum and maximum amount of processor resources allowed for a workload and a target to be achieved. A single policy can be associated with multiple workloads. A subset of the resources available to an operating system instance, isolated for use by specific processes. A resource partition has its own process scheduler. CPU resources in the partition may be allocated using Fair-Share Scheduler (FSS) groups or processor sets (psets). Policies for controlling the allocation of resources to the partition may be set using Global Workload Manager (gWLM). A resource partition that is integrated with HP-UX Security Containment. Shared resource domain. A collection of compartments that share system resources. The compartments can be nPartitions, virtual partitions, virtual machines, psets, or FSS groups. A software entity provided by HP Integrity Virtual Machines. This technology allows a single server or nPartition to act as a VM Host for multiple virtual machines, each running its own instance of an operating system (referred to as a guest OS). Virtual machines are servers in the VSE. A software partition of a server, or of a single nPartition, provided by HP vPars. Each virtual partition can run its own instance of an operating system. A virtual partition cannot span an nPartition boundary. A collection of processes in a standalone server, nPartition compartment, virtual partition compartment, or virtual machine compartment. Global Workload Manager (gWLM) extends this concept to include pset compartments and FSS group compartments. Virtualization Manager enables you to monitor the resource utilization of workloads. Capacity Advisor collects the historical resource utilization for workloads for use in capacity planning activities. Global Workload Manager (gWLM) enables you to monitor and manage workloads by automatically adjusting the resource allocations of their compartments based on policies. Workloads that are managed by gWLM are called managed workloads. Workloads that are monitored by Virtualization Manager but are not managed by gWLM are called monitored workloads.

Limitations of This Release

This release of the VSE Management Software includes the following limitations:
12

HP Systems Insight Manager requires each managed system to have a unique name. System information will be reported incorrectly if two systems have the same name, even if they represent the same physical

Introduction

machine. For example, you cannot have an nPartition named the same as a vPars host, even if the vPars host is running on that nPartition. If this situation occurs, you can correct it by renaming one of the partitions using the appropriate command, such as cplxmodify(1M), parmodify(1M), vparmodify(1M), or hpvmmodify(1M). These commands do not require a reboot to change the name. There is no support for IPv6 in this release of the Virtual Server Environment. This release of the Virtual Server Environment does not allow the CMS to be made fully HA (High Availability) compliant. To protect against failure of the CMS, HP recommends that the HP SIM database and the VSE Management Database be regularly backed up. For information about backing up the VSE Management Database, see vseinitconfig(1M). Refer to the HP SIM manuals or online help for information about backing up the HP SIM database. Monitored workloads are not able to track CPU utilization for processes that are in existence for less than five minutes. This behavior is documented in the online help. If you need to track utilization of short-lived processes, use a managed workload. See the Create Monitored Workload help topic for more details. A system may contain monitored workloads or managed workloads, but may not contain both types of workloads. Any user that is able to authenticate on the CMS will have the ability to create and view parked workloads, regardless of whether they have authorizations for any VSE related tools or toolboxes. A workload is parked if its system is set to none when it is created or later modified.

Activating Licenses
The VSE Management Software products are licensed on a per-core basis on managed systems. An initial 90-day license per product and per system is automatically included with the software. When a new system is added to your environment, you will have 90 days to evaluate each product on that system. IMPORTANT: You must activate the trial license for gWLM using the procedure described below. No additional steps are needed to activate the other trial licenses. Before the end of the 90-day trial period, you must purchase and install a permanent License To Use (LTU) for each product that you want to continue to use on each system. Unlicensed systems will not be accessible by the VSE Management Software tools after the initial 90 day trial license expires. A permanent license for Virtualization Manager is automatically included with purchase of the LTU for Capacity Advisor or gWLM. To purchase the appropriate LTUs contact your HP sales representative, your HP services representative, or your authorized HP reseller. LTUs for HP-UX managed systems are supplied as depot files and are installed using the swinstall command. Linux LTUs for gWLM are supplied as .rpm files and are installed using the rpm command. LTUs for managed systems running Microsoft Windows or Linux (except for gWLM) are supplied as code keys and are installed using the vselicense command on the CMS. HP Integrity Essentials Virtualization Manager

After you run the discovery process, HP SIM keeps information about all of your server resources in its system list. From HP SIM you can launch Virtualization Manager to display and manage your VSE resources. You must be signed on to HP SIM as a user with appropriate authorizations in order to use Virtualization Manager. For example, if you do not have CMS authorization for the Monitor Tools toolbox, you will not be able to launch Virtualization Manager at all. Refer to Configuring User Authorizations (page 17) for details on user authorizations. Figure 4-1 Starting Virtualization Manager

Launch Virtualization Manager from HP SIM in either of the following ways: From the HP SIM menu bar, choose Tools VSE Management..., as shown in Figure 4-1 From the HP SIM Systems and Events list in the left-hand navigation area, choose Systems Shared Systems by Type All VSE Resources

When Virtualization Manager starts, it displays all the VSE resources on the systems that you are authorized to view, along with their real-time utilization metrics.

System View
By default, Virtualization Manager starts with the System View (System tab) displayed. In this view, the VSE resources in the management domain are shown in hierarchical compartments. Each compartment appears as a box with a color-coded stripe on the left. The color indicates the compartment type (for example, standalone system, nPartition server, VM Host, and so on). At the top of the box are, from left to right, a selection check box, a status icon, the system name, and the utilization metrics that have been selected. You can choose to display any of the following metrics using the check boxes above the compartments:

HP Integrity Essentials Virtualization Manager

21

CPU Percentage of total CPU resources in use; or the average of the CPU utilization in all of this compartment's subcompartments.

Memory Percentage of total memory resources in use; or the average of the memory utilization in all of this compartment's subcompartments.

Network I/O Network throughput (transmitted plus received), in Mb/s (defined as 1000*1000 bits per second); or the sum of the network throughput in all of this compartment's subcompartments.

Disk I/O Disk I/O throughput (stored plus retrieved), in MB/s (defined as 1000*1000 bytes per second); or the sum of the disk I/O throughput in all of this compartment's subcompartments.

Some compartments can include subcompartments. An nPartition server includes a compartment for each nPartition on the server. A VM Host includes a compartment for each virtual machine that it is hosting. A vPars server includes a compartment for each virtual partition that it is hosting. Click the compartment's button to hide its subcompartments; click the button to show the subcompartments. To perform an action on a system, select its compartment using the check box in the compartment's upper left corner, then choose the action from the menu bar directly under the tabs. Click the Deselect All button to clear all your selections. Some actions (such as Create Workload Definition...) do not require you to select a compartment. The System View provides many ways to display detailed information about the VSE resources in your management domain. Each underlined label is a link to additional information. If you hold the cursor over these links, or over any other controls, a brief description of the control is displayed.

Workload View
Select the Workload tab to display the Workload View. In this view, the workloads in your management domain are shown in a tabular form. Utilization metrics are shown for each workload, similar to the system utilization metrics shown in the System View. Workloads that are managed by gWLM (managed workloads) have a policy name assigned to them. As in the System View, there are many links in this view that can be clicked to display additional information or to manage the workloads using gWLM. If you hold the cursor over these links, or over any other controls, a brief description of the control is displayed. Select a workload by clicking the selection check box to the left of the workload name. You can choose actions to perform on the selected workloads from the menu bar under the tabs.

HP Integrity Essentials Global Workload Manager

Select the Shared Resource Domain tab to access Global Workload Manager (gWLM). Global Workload Manager improves both workload performance and resource utilization in a shared compute environment. For servers partitioned with nPartitions, virtual partitions, virtual machines, psets, or FSS groups, gWLM can do the following: Monitor each application. Determine the processor resources needed by each application. Automatically migrate processors between compartments to where they are needed most. This migration improves application performance by making more resources available to the application at times of peak demand. In addition, migrating idle processors to the applications that are busy increases processor utilization.

HP Integrity Essentials Capacity Advisor

Select the Capacity Advisor tab to access HP Integrity Essentials Capacity Advisor. Capacity Advisor lets you quickly and safely test potentially costly configuration changes in your data center before you actually make them. With Capacity Advisor, you can find answers to questions such as the following: Is there room on this system for an additional workload? Will this workload fit on this system? Can I consolidate these servers as virtual machines on a single server? What might my CPU demand look like next year? Will adding another processor bring my CPU utilization down to 70% most of the time?

Capacity Advisor helps you optimize workloads in your VSE to help maximize utilization of server resources. It provides scenario analysis to help you manage your current server resources and plan for changes to your workloads and resources. These scenarios allow you to simulate the following actions: Resizing systems Resizing workloads Moving workloads Automatic generation of reports Capacity Advisor automatically generates reports that would otherwise take many manual steps. Trace-based simulator Providing graphs over specific data intervals, Capacity Advisor gives a more complete and accurate view of resource utilization than focusing on a single peak. Ease of data gathering Data is collected automatically using a secure protocol and stored in a central database for analysis. For detailed information about using Capacity Advisor, refer to the HP Integrity Essentials Capacity Advisor User's Guide. This document is available on the HP Instant Information CD. The latest version can also be downloaded from http://docs.hp.com/en/hplex.html. For additional information about Capacity Advisor, refer to the following: Capacity Advisor online help

HP Integrity Virtual Machines Manager

From the System View, you can access HP Integrity Virtual Machines Manager (VM Manager) by clicking the View: VM Host link in a VM Host compartment, or by clicking the View: VM link in an individual virtual machine compartment. VM Manager helps you to create and monitor virtual machines using HP Integrity Virtual Machines (Integrity VM). Integrity VM running on HP Integrity servers creates software-controlled virtual machines that share a single set of physical hardware resources. Each virtual machine is a complete environment that runs its own instance of an operating system (called a guest OS). Like a physical machine, the virtual machine contains at least one CPU, memory, disks, network interfaces, a console, and other virtual components. Virtual components are partially emulated in software rather than fully implemented in hardware. VM Manager provides a graphical view of the virtual machines running under a VM Host, their utilization metrics, the virtual resources assigned to them, and the physical resources from which the virtual resources are obtained. Actions you can perform from VM Manager include the following:

vselicense(1M)
NAME
vselicense -- Install or remove licenses for VSE Management Software products

SYNOPSIS
Path: /opt/vse/bin/vselicense vselicense -l key [-v] -n sys [-n sys...] -p prod [-p prod...] vselicense -r [-v] -n sys [-n sys...] -p prod [-p prod...] vselicense -n sys [-n sys...]

DESCRIPTION
The vselicense command is installed on the Central Management Server (CMS) with the VSE Management Software. This command installs and removes License to Use (LTU) keys for the HP Virtual Server Environment (VSE) Management Software products. An LTU allows you to use a specific product to manage a specific system. They are recorded on the Central Management System (CMS). This command applies to managed systems running Linux or Microsoft Windows operating systems. It is not used for managed systems running HP-UX, nor for installing and removing gWLM licenses. HP-UX LTUs and gWLM LTUs can be activated using the VSEMgmt Licenses... tool in the VSE Management Software graphical user interface. Refer to the VSE Management Software Quick Start Guide or online help for details. The VSE Management Software products are licensed on a per-core basis on managed systems. An initial 90-day license per product and per system is automatically included with the software. No additional steps are needed to activate these trial licenses. When a new system is added to your environment, you will have 90 days to evaluate each product on that system. Before the end of the 90-day trial period, you must purchase and install a permanent license for each product that you want to continue to use on each system. To purchase the appropriate LTU, contact your HP sales representative, your HP services representative, or your authorized HP reseller. NOTE: A permanent license for Virtualization Manager is automatically included with any purchase of the LTU for HP Integrity Essentials Capacity Advisor or HP Integrity Essentials Global Workload Manager.

Options
The vselicense command recognizes the following options. -l key Install the license key key for the products identified by the -p options on the systems identified by the -n options. -r Remove the licenses for the products identified by the -p options from the systems identified by the -n options. -v After the install or remove operation, display the LTUs that are now installed on the specified systems. -n sys The system name, as identified in HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM). If one or more -n options are used without either -l or -r, this command will only display the LTUs that are installed on the specified systems. -p prod The product number of the LTU being installed or removed. For example, T2783AC is the product number for the Virtualization Manager LTU for Linux managed systems.

RETURN VALUES
0 The command completed successfully; no errors were detected.
26

1 An error occurred and the command did not complete successfully.

EXAMPLES
Install a license for the Virtualization Manager (product T2783AC) on the managed system that is identified in HP SIM as accounting. The license-key value was obtained from HP when the LTU was purchased: vselicense -l license-key -n accounting -p T2783AC Remove the LTU for Virtualization Manager from the systems named test1 and test2 and display the LTUs that remain installed on those systems: vselicense -r -v -n test1 -n test2 -p T2783AC Display the LTUs installed on the systems named test1 and test2: vselicense -n test1 -n test2
