Dont Forget the Flu Vaccine

younger than 5 years old are hospitalized each year from flu complications. Flu can also make some health conditions worse. Babies younger than 6 months are too young to get the flu vaccine, but they are at higher risk for complications and death from flu. Because of this, it is important that family members and other people that care for young infants get vaccinated to help ensure that they dont transmit the infection to them. Its important that all family members and caregivers get the flu vaccine to cocoon infants,1 says Dr. Anne Schuchat, Assistant Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service and CDCs Director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. The 2009 H1N1 flu (so named for the year the virus was identified) hit children particularly hard last year, and that virus is expected to be around again this year. The 201011 flu vaccine includes protection against the 2009 H1N1 flu virus, along with two seasonal flu viruses expected to circulate this season. There are two kinds of flu vaccine: the flu shot and a flu nasal spray vaccine. These vaccines cannot give you the flu because they are made from killed or weakened influenza viruses. Flu vaccines have an excellent safety record. Hundreds of millions of Americans have safely gotten flu vaccines and most people generally do not experience any side effects after getting a flu vaccine. When side effects do occur, they are generally mild and include redness and soreness at the injection site for the flu shot, and occasionally sore throat, runny nose and rarely fever after the nasal spray vaccine. While these symptoms can be uncomfortable and inconvenient, these symptoms are mild and resolve quickly when compared to a bad case of the flu. Parents who take their children to get the flu vaccine can rest a little easier knowing they are helping to protect their family against a potentially serious illness, Dr. Schuchat said. And of course, parents should be vaccinated, too. Children should get the flu vaccine as soon as possible to ensure early protection for this flu season. Most children 6 months through 8 years who get the flu vaccine for the first time will need to get 2 doses of the vaccine, the second dose (booster dose) 4 weeks after the first. Healthy children ages 2 and older can get the nasal-spray vaccine instead of a flu shot. Talk to your childs doctor or nurse if youre not sure. Once vaccinated, the body needs two weeks to produce antibodies for protection against the flu. The vaccine does not provide protection against nonflu viruses that can cause colds and other respiratory illnesses. Check with your doctor, pharmacist, or local health clinic about getting you and your child vaccinated from flu. For more information about the dangers of flu and the benefits of the flu vaccine, talk to your doctor or nurse, visit www.flu.gov, or call CDC at 1800CDCINFO (8002324636). December 15, 2012

As a parent, you do everything you can to protect your children. Buckle them up in the car. Watch them closely when theyre in the water. Teach them to look both ways when they cross the street. Warn them not to talk to strangers. How about making sure they get the flu vaccine? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that everyone 6 months and older get the flu vaccine every year. That includes children from tiny to teen. Getting the flu vaccine is the best way to prevent flu. For children younger than 5 years of age and those with chronic health conditions, like asthma and diabetes, getting the flu vaccine is especially important to avoid serious flu complications like pneumonia, which can lead to hospitalization and even death. How To Choose A Resolution You Can Keep

New Years resolutions may have varying degrees of success, but even those people who find it difficult to keep their resolutions year after year still tend to make a new resolution once the hour of midnight chimes. Though it may seem as though resolutions are made to be broken, resolutions can be the first step many people take toward a happier and healthier life, making them more than just a silly annual exercise in empty promises. A common hurdle many people must clear when making a New Years resolution is choosing the resolution itself. Resolving to become a millionaire in the next 12 months is likely unrealistic, as is taking on the same resolution you made last year that proved unsuccessful. Before making a New Years resolution this year, consider the following tips aimed at helping you choose a resolution that has a chance to be successful. Make it something youre likely to enjoy. Resolving to lose weight is perhaps the most popular New Years resolution every year. Though theres no way to measure how many people make this resolution and stick with it, its safe to assume many people fall short of their weight-loss goal. Thats because the steps people must take to lose weight are not always easy to embrace. Many people join a gym in January so they can fully commit to their resolutions to lose weight. But joining a gym isnt always the answer, as its easy to become intimidated at a gym where the majority of your fellow members are already in great shape. But this doesnt mean you should shy away from your resolution. Instead, look for ways to make your resolution enjoyable so youre more likely to stick with it. If you have resolved to lose weight but a gym isnt for you, sign up for a dance class or join a cycling group. Theres more than one way to commit to a given resolution, and finding the most enjoyable way to tackle your resolution is often the easiest way to make it a success. Make it a realistic goal. Your resolution should be realistic. If not, the chances of being successful are slim. For example, resolving to move overseas by the end of the coming calendar year may be a great goal, but if you have no job prospects overseas or too many commitments at home, then this goal is not very realistic and you probably wont make it a successful resolution. However, this doesnt mean you have to abandon your dream of moving overseas. Instead, resolve to make changes that make your desire to live overseas more realistic. Learn the language of a favorite country or learn about that countrys job market and work toward making yourself more attractive to potential overseas employers. This is a more realistic goal than deciding to move overseas in the

very near future, and it sets you up for future success should you resolve to move abroad down the road. Employ the buddy system. Resolutions dont have to be a one-man show. In fact, your resolution may prove easier to keep if you can find someone to go along for the ride with you. For instance, if you have resolved to quit smoking, find a friend who also smokes and commit to your resolution together. You can lean on each other when times get tough and serve as each others watchdog to make sure neither one of you is straying from your goal. If you resolve to learn a foreign language in the year ahead, find a friend to enroll in a class with you. As additional motivation, commit to visiting a foreign country where this language is spoken at the end of the year if both of you have successfully fulfilled your resolutions. Develop a plan before making any commitments. Before you commit to a resolution, develop a plan as to how youre going to make that resolution a success and determine if this plan is realistic. For example, if you resolve to lose weight, part of your plan should include an exercise regimen and any dietary changes. Once you have laid out this plan, examine it to see how likely you are to stick with it. If your plan includes waking up at 6 a.m. every morning to workout and you know waking up that early is problematic for you, then you dont have to abandon the resolution, but you might want to develop a new plan thats more likely to be successful. The plan should be in place before you make your resolution. If you simply cannot map out a plan thats amenable to your schedule, then this resolution might prove very difficult to keep and you might want to explore another option. Many people find their New Years resolutions have fallen by the wayside come the end of January. But those serious about making a change can take steps to ensure their resolutions are a success.

5 Things To Do When The New Year Arrives

People across the globe anxiously await the arrival of the new year. Different cultures and religions celebrate their own new year at different times, but for much of the world, January 1 marks the date for change and renewal. With so much emphasis placed on what people will be doing for the last day of the year, little thought may be given to what to do after the clock strikes 12. Each minute afterward opens up the possibilities to begin fresh with new goals and tasks. For those wondering how to commence the new year, there are many ways to tackle the first day and thereafter after you have recovered from the New Years Eve celebration, that is. 1. Take down holiday decorations. While there are some people who prefer to leave up their Christmas decorations until after the celebration of the Epiphany, or Three Kings Day, by January 1 many are ready to say goodbye to the holiday season for another year. Having the day off of work and school enables you to spend time removing decorations from the house and taking down the tree, especially before dried-out pine needles become more than you can handle. 2. Shop post-holiday sales. After spending several months buying for every person on your list, this could be a time that you focus on picking up some things for yourself or the household. Stores may need to liquidate holiday stock and other inventory to make room for spring styles. Many shoppers find the deals hard to pass up when shopping in the early days of January. Check online to comparison shop, and scour the Internet for any printable coupons that can earn you even bigger discounts. 3. Visit family and friends. This time of year may be happy for some, but for those far from members of the family or seniors who may have lost many close companions, the winter and post-holiday season could bring on the blues. Visiting extended family you may not have seen during the holidays is one way to pass the day. You also can volunteer some of your time at a senior center or assisted-living facility to spread some post-holiday cheer. 4. Head to the movies. Go to the movie theater and take in a flick with the family. January is not the most active time for new releases, but there are some films released in the first month of the year. You can enjoy a lazy day with some cinematic magic and a bag of popcorn. 5. Make a folder to store tax preparation paperwork. Tax season is just around the corner. Use this time to collect any paperwork you already may have received and put it in a safe place. Expect new statements of past earnings, any information about interest earned on bank statements and other pertinent tax documents to start arriving. Also, if you use an accountant to help file your taxes, call his or her office and book an appointment before his or her schedule fills up. There are many ways to start off the new year on the right foot. Get a head start on cleaning or organizing, or relax once more with friends and family.

Dont Forget Finances When Making Resolutions

When the time comes to make New Years resolutions, the conventional wisdom is to focus on weight. Such wisdom is understandable, as many people spend the holiday season indulging in big meals and all the treats synonymous with having fun. While its acceptable to make healthy resolutions, a slimmer waist and a healthier diet should not be the only goals for the year ahead. In light of the last several years, its important for men and women to make financial resolutions for the year ahead, too. No one can say with certainty when, or if, the economy will rebound, and men and women should look at the New Year as a suitable time to make some financial resolutions for the future. - Reassess your investment plan. Since 2008, the market has been up and down like a roller coaster. Those who have weathered the storm have no doubt witnessed big gains and significant losses over the last few years, and the turn of the calendar is a great time to reassess investments and possibly make some changes. Are you taking on more risk than youre comfortable with? Is your portfolio too conservative? How well are you diversifying? Look at your investments from every angle and determine if its time to make some changes. - Resolve to be more liquid. A This year, dont forget to make financial 2011 poll from the National resolutions, including having more cash at your disposal to better handle emergencies. Foundation for Credit Counseling found that 64 percent of Americans would need to utilize a source other than their savings account to pay for a $1,000 unplanned expense. That percentage illustrates that 1611 E. Main St., Grass Valley 477-1000 most adults just dont have enough cash on hand. 05 Subaru Outback AWD 08 Subaru Forester AWD This year, resolve to be more liquid. Being more liquid enables you to more effectively handle emergencies, and it also helps you avoid being forced to sell investments at the wrong time. - Shake things up. exercised financial responsibility over the last 12 months, paying down debts and paying all bills on time, this is the perfect time to negotiate lower rates and reap the rewards of your good behavior. - Dont invest in anything you dont understand. Too often investors get caught up in so-called expert forecasts and act impulsively based on the advice of some talking head they see on television or hear on the radio. Unfortunately, such experts arent always certified financial professionals, and some might even have ulterior motives for pushing certain investments and shunning others. Whats more, few people know the track record of these experts, so their advice should not be taken at face value. A simple rule for the year ahead should be to never invest in anything you dont understand. If an investment opportunity seems worthwhile, do all of your homework to gain a solid understanding of the opportunity before investing any money. Healthy resolutions go beyond a slimmer waist and a healthier diet. This year, resolve to get healthier financially as well.

The program will include audience sing-alongs of known treasures, and then my favorite - the most beautiful arrangement of O Holy Night with orchestra and choir that I have ever heard. This will mark the first concert of Sierra Master Chorales fifth season. Dec: 21-23: Beyond 2012: Birthing a New Earth Relationship with Girvani Leerer and Michael Stone at Sierra Hot Springs, Sierraville, CA. This workshop will be an exploration into the most basic tools of Shamanism. We will be journeying, drumming, dancing, singing, meditating and soaking our way into non-ordinary states of reality. With the Spirits of the beautiful Sierra Valley, our helping and ancestral spirits and our power animals we will discover new ways of being in the world and how to dream a new world into being. As Sandra Ingerman says, the practice of shamanic journeying is a way for us to feel personally empowered in our lives. It provides us with a way to have direct revelation and is a simple approach for accessing spiritual guidance. It is a way to get us out of our heads as well as expand our awareness and consciousness. In these times of chaos and great change shamanism is a tool to bring us closer to the natural world and all life. If we are to survive these changing times it is essential that we journey into the heart of the cosmic mystery to tap into the very DNA of the creative process. At the heart of this process is the power to create transformation for ourselves, others and the planet. More than any other of the human types concerned with the sacred, the shamanic personality journeys into the far reaches of the cosmic mystery and brings back the vision and the power needed by the human community at the most elemental level. The shamanic personality speaks and best understands the language of the various creatures of the Earth. Thomas Berry. This program is a presentation of University of Earth www.UofEarth.com Admission: Friday, Optional gathering for no host dinner and soak, $95 for Saturday workshop 10am-10pm

R&B, to good time Rock & Roll on concert stages and festivals around the world. And at every stage along the way, hes instilled all of his music with passion, creativity, and a healthy helping of wisdom, wit, and good humor. Born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Bishops earliest exposure to music came from the familys radio, where in between How Much Is That Doggy In The Window and Your Cheatin Heart, young Elvin could sometimes catch classic records of Jimmy Reed, Howlin Wolf and Muddy Waters. Once hed got his feet wet, there was no turning back. He quickly acquired his first guitar and on his own began working out the basic outlines of the Blues, R&B and Rock & Roll that had captured his soul. By the time he was preparing for college in the late 1950s, Bishop had earned a National Merit Scholarship that allowed him to go to almost any school he chose and the only choice on Elvins mind was the prestigious University of Chicago, which just happened to be located on Chicagos South Side, ground zero for much of the urban Blues Elvin had so far been studying only from a distance. He arrived in Chicago in 1959, and before long crossed paths with a fellow student Paul Butterfield. Together, they explored the taverns and Blues joints in the black neighborhoods surrounding the university campus at a time when Blues giants like Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Otis Rush, Magic Sam and Howlin Wolf could be found playing in corner bars for a $2 cover charge just about any night of the week. By 1963, Bishop and Butterfield were ready to graduate not from the university, but from their apprenticeship under Chicagos Blues veterans. They made their first recordings that year, doing a session with veterans Billy Boy Arnold and James Cotton. That same year, they recruited Howlin Wolfs former rhythm section of Sam Lay on drums and Jerome Arnold on bass, and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band was born. In 1965, after adding Mike Bloomfield and Mark Naftalin to the lineup, their revolutionary debut LP was released, opening the door for virtually all the young white Blues bands that followed. Bishop remained in the fold for three albums with the Butterfield band, including their innovative East-West release (on which Bishop and Bloomfields intertwining guitars helped set the stage for the Allman Brothers Band and the Grateful Dead, among many others who followed), before getting the itch to move on and venturing out on his own. Elvin released several well-received albums in

the early 70s, before experiencing his biggest Pop success, the gold-record earning national hit Fooled Around and Fell In Love from his 1976 LP Struttin My Stuff.. Road work kept Elvin busy through the 80s, and as time went by his journey led him back to the Blues that were at the root of all his musical endeavors. And that fertile territory has been his focus ever since. Admission: $25 members, $28 nonmember. DANCE CONCERT Limited Theater Seating, Plenty of room to DANCE. Dec. 30: Antsy McClain & The Trailer Park Troubadours, 8p.m. Singer, songwriter, humorist and small town philosopher Antsy McClain writes what he knows: The good life. Staging his live shows from a small, fictitious trailer park called Pine View Heights (patterned after his own childhood surroundings and experiences), McClain is free from an over-abundance of material things and appreciates time with family and friends. Sharing his mantra of Enjoy The Ride, McClain has won friendship and collaboration with some of the most talented musicians in the world. With such a wide circle of mentors like Waylon Jennings, Tommy Smothers, guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel and cowboy poet Baxter Black, its no wonder McClain marches to the beat of a different drum. And his influences dont stop there. His live shows touch upon Country, Rockabilly, Jazz, Swing, and a number of Pop culture references. McClains poetry, heart-felt ballads and humorous tales have garnered praise from such artists as Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Lindsay Buckingham, and David Wilcox, to name a few. After a Nashville record deal proved unfruitful in 1999, McClain took the reins himself and blazed one of the industries first fiercely independent campaigns, producing some of Americanas most innovative projects, and cleverly relying on fan involvement (They call themselves Flamingoheads) to finance each album, and help promote live shows and events. Before music found him, Antsy was an award-winning illustrator and designer for book and magazine publishers. As the DIY movement took hold, McClain was one of the first artists of note to not only record, mix and produce his own albums, but to serve as art director and designer for everything involving his music career; from CD package design to website design to merchandise. one-of-a-kind boutique item originals, often signed and numbered when sold. When accused of being a control freak, McClain flashes a guilty look, but dissuades the dig by saying, Ive always just tried to save myself money. I was a self employed guy with five kids. We had an agreement that my wife was to be home while they were young, and it worked out great. But I didnt have a thousand dollars to pay somebody for a logo. If I was going to have one, Id have to do it. Calling himself a life enthusiast, Antsy McClain is eager to see whats around every corner, and watches the horizon intently for each new change that takes place. My life is my art, explains Antsy, I am painting my life one day at a time, one brush stroke at a time. As I spend time with my wife and children, or as I go on the road toward new places to make new friends, as I write a new song, as I draw or paint something for people to look at and enjoy This is my life, and Im grateful to have the opportunity to share it with music, with words and with pictures. McClain looks out the window as a car whirs past, I am enjoying the ride. www.unhitched.com Antsy McClain is a troubadour with some connections. sings harmony on Time-Sweetened Lies. Creative, rootsy, and wonderful. If you like it served 100 proof, step right up. Robert K. Oermann, Music Row News, Nashville. When I first looked into the Trailer Park Troubadours, I was prepared for them to be funny. What I wasnt prepared for was these guys are flat-out GREAT. Their humor is obvious. When they sing songs like My Baby Whistles When She Walks (its not what you think), its a scream. But then, a few songs in, you hear something as poignant and rich as Primer Grey Impala, you kinda sit up and take notice. These guys can really, REALLY, play and sing. Jelly Bread, emerging from Reno, NV, is a tour de force of full frontal funk, thoroughly steeped in a Rock-Americana style, with a dash of rollicking indie alt-rock radio appeal. Having shared the stage with Soulive, Ivan Nevilles Dumpstaphunk, G Love & Special Sauce, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Roy Rogers & The Delta Rythm Kings, Rusted Root, and jamming with Jonny Lang, Jelly Bread has marked over 350 shows under its belt in its 3 year history. Achilles Wheel, based in the foothills of Northern Californias Sierra Nevada, is a high energy fusion of World and American music played on numerous stringed instruments and a whole truck load of drums. Featuring the singing/songwriting and guitar playing of Paul Kamm and Jonny Mojo, this up and coming group came together in the wake of other projects including The DeadBeats, Buck Love and The HumperHeads, The Jonny Mojo Trio, Darcana, Collage of I, Euthanasia, and Dead Ahead. Special guests: Lorraine Gervais, Kate Haight, Peter Wilson & Bob Gubber. On January 8, 1935 Elvis Aaron Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi. In 2010 Nevada Countys rock-a-billy quartet, The Chillbilles, threw a dance party at the Center for the Arts to commemorate Elvis birthday. The concert was a stunning success leading to a command performance at the Nevada County Fairgrounds Fourth of July celebration. Continuing the tradition, the Chillbillies and special guests will dust off the Elvis Presley song book for another tribute to the King of rock and roll. Sing along and dance to rousing renditions of rockers like Blue Suede Shoes, Jailhouse Rock and Hound Dog along with touching renditions of great ballads Love Me Tender and I Cant Help Falling in Love with You. Elvis began his career in Memphis in 1954 when Sun Records owner Sam Phillips, eager to bring the sound of African American music to a wider audience, saw in Presley the means to realize his ambition. Accompanied by guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, Presley was one of the originators of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country and rhythm and blues. Thats All Right, was released on July 19, 1954, along with an Elvis Presley, Scotty and Bill version of Bill Monroes waltz, Blue Moon of Kentucky. That recording launched a career that would soon define rock & roll. The Chillbillies feature John Girton (Dan Hicks, Maria Muldaur), Tom Menig (Alela Diane, The Deadbeats), Charlie Faber (Lorraine Gervais, The Dogtones) and Ty Smith (Huclebucks, Bob Mora & the Third Degree Blues Band). The band formed in the mid-nineties to join the wave of rockabilly revival bands that included the Stray Cats, Big Band Voodoo Daddy and Cherry Poppin Daddies. Rockabilly is one of the earliest styles of rock and roll combining rock & roll, hillbilly, western swing, boogie woogie, and rhythm and blues. Joining the Chillbillies on vocals are Lorraine Gervais, Kate Haight and Peter Wilson. Returning on keyboards is Bob Gubber. Join the Center in celebrating 78 years of Elvis ~ Admission: $12 member, $15 non-member. Theater seating on a first-comefirst-served basis. Plenty of room to DANCE!
