Macaulay Metals

Newsletter
Issue 12, December 2012 Hello All, Welcome to the Christmas edition of the newsletter for 2012. I dont know where the year went. It has been an incredibly busy time at Macaulay Metals. We have completed some amazing projects during the year and hence made some major progress within the business. Some of the highlights include; amalgamating the 3 separate trading companies into 1 company and doing the same for 2 property companies, changing the balance date, and continuing to win some significant projects. I am particularly proud of the Benmore Transformer Disposal. At just over 1,000 tonnes of transformers, this is undoubtedly one of the largest transformer scrapping projects ever completed in New Zealand. We redeveloped the front of our Wellington Yard and now have our new hassle free public buying shed M:\MML\photo 2.JPG operational. Last week we had an official opening for the new buying shed which was a great opportunity for many of our local scrap suppliers to check it out. We got some great feedback. We also opened a new yard in Gisborne at the beginning of the year which is really starting to establish itself in the local market. In September I travelled to Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong to visit some of our scrap buyers. It was exciting to meet some of our existing buyers but also meet some new ones. It is always a great opportunity to see exactly how our scrap is used and get to see the finished product. On occasions I have also been fortunate enough to be at a buyers site and see scrap from Macaulay Metals being fed into a furnace! The scale of some buyers is hard to imagine, one copper company in Korea that we supply uses around M:\MML\photo 1.JPG 15,000 tonnes of copper scrap every month. I have included a couple of photos. It was positive to note that our buyers value their relationship with Macaulay Metals and view the scrap we sell them as being well presented and good quality. I wish everyone and their families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I am excited about coming back in 2013 and kicking off another busy year! Regards Jeff

New Hassle Free Public Buying Shed

Wellingtons new Hassle Free Public Buying Shed has been in operation for a couple of months and the official opening was held on Wednesday, 5th December 2012 on site. Customers and Staff joined to celebrate the new facility and the ease with which the public can now recycle their metal. The team, along with Jeff Harris welcomed Nicky Wagner, a National MP with a strong environmental focus and Ross Jamieson, Hutt City Council councilor to join the celebrations. As an innovative company, using a pair of scissors to cut the ribbon didnt quite seem appropriate, so we found a big machine instead needless to say it found the ribbon quite an easy task after huge chunks of steel! The new facility has an integral role to play in the recycling of scrap metal. It is cleaner, greener and faster than the traditional yard. Its easy to use and simple to drive through, making the joy of recycling much easier for the public and small trade customers to experience. Its as easy as 1, 2, 3! Drive In, Weigh In and Cash Out! Our new shed is people friendly, you can safely get out of your vehicle and watch your material being sorted and weighed, collect your cash and drive out with no hassle. Macaulay Metals is proud to be a part of the scrap metal industry and support its role in conserving energy and natural resources reducing the toll on our environment. Recycling scrap metal is good for all of us. The more thats recycled, the less that has to be sourced from mining activities. The scrap metal we process and export has served its useful life in its current form but still offers a wealth of possibilities for the future. And unlike most other recycling in New Zealand the customer gets paid for it! In 2013 the new buying facility will also become part of the Hutt City Councils World of Waste school tours which are designed to enhance students understanding about the nature and volume of waste that is generated and alternative ideas to throwing things away and sending them to the landfill.

Focus on Non-Metal Supplier

For many years KPMG has had the pleasure of working with Jeff and the staff at Macaulay Metals. This relationship started right back in 1995 when Jeff Harris purchased the company from Bill Macaulay. Over this period we have watched Macaulay Metals grow from strength to strength as a business. KPMG has supported Macaulay Metals along the way by providing accounting and tax advice. Further to this, KPMG has assisted Macaulay Metals with amalgamations, restructuring and business acquisitions. Over the years, some KPMG staff have been seconded out to Macaulay Metals. Mark Hudson was lucky enough to be seconded for six months at the start of last year. He thoroughly enjoyed working with Phil, the finance team and the guys in the yard. The most challenging aspect of the role was trying to beat Rebecca in the daily trivia quizzes! The relationship between KPMG and Macaulay Metals was extended further last year when we were appointed the auditors. KPMG would like to thank Jeff, Phil and all the staff at Macaulay Metals and we trust that our strong relationships will continue.

Focus on Non-Metal Supplier

Over the past few years I have had the pleasure of working with Macaulay Metals staff in the Bay of Plenty region and the management staff in Wellington. We supply and install Macaulay Metals CCTV cameras and recording equipment in the Northern Yards. We also look after the Security Intrusion alarms at the three Northern Yards. With the occasional incidence of stolen property making its way to the Scrap dealers, Macaulay Metals have taken the initiative to show that they are doing everything in their power to help the Police with identifying those that are selling dishonestly obtained goods. Security Plus equipment is also used to protect the assets of Macaulay Metals against third parties who may see their property as worthy of stealing. The cameras are also used to monitor stock levels remotely and to ensure that product is graded correctly. I would like to thank everybody for their support and especially the friendly nature of the staff in Rotorua, Gisborne, Kawerau and Whakatane. Id like to wish you all a very Merry Xmas and a Prosperous 2013. Written by Chris Park. Director, Security Plus (BOP) Limited
