Hello Kitty Ornament with Tonttulakki

For those who don't speak Finnish, tonttulakki is a Christmas hat. Kind of like a Santa hat but it is worn by the elves and children. I made these ornaments for my nieces in Finland as they are big fans of Hello Kitty.

Materials:
Yarn: Loops and Threads Impeccable Solids White about 6 m of any worsted weight yarn in white
Bernat Satin Maitai about 4 m of any worsted weight yarn in pink or red small amounts of black and yellow for adding the face details

Needles: 3.75mm/US 5 24 circular

Abbreviations:
St, Sts- Stitch, stitches K- Knit Kfb- Knit into the front and the back of the same stitch to increase. Sl1 slip one knitwise psso pass the slipped stitch over the knit one

Directions:
Head:
CO 8 sts. Join in the round, do not twist. Round 1: *Kfb, k 2, kfb* - repeat * to * (12 sts) Round 2: K all

Round 3: *Kfb, k 4, kfb* - repeat * to * (16 sts) Round 4: K all Round 5: *Kfb, k 6, kfb* - repeat * to * (20 sts) Round 6: K all Round 7: *Kfb, k 8, kfb* - repeat * to * (24 sts) Round 8: K all Knit 6 rounds straight. Decrease Rounds: Round 15: *sl1, k, psso, k10, k2tog* - repeat * to * (20 sts) Round 16: K all Round 17: *sl1, k, psso, k8, k2tog* - repeat * to * (16 sts) Round 18: K all Round 19: *sl1, k, psso, k6, k2tog* - repeat * to * (12 sts) Round 20: *sl1, k, psso, k4, k2tog* - repeat * to * (8 sts) BO all sts.

Ears (make 2):

CO 8 sts. Join in the round, do not twist. Round 1-2: K Round 3: *sl1, k, psso, k2tog* - repeat * to * (4 sts) Round 4: k2tog, k2tog (2 sts) Cut yarn and pass through remaining sts and pull through ear.

Hat:
Slide bell on to yarn to knit it in at the tip of the hat. CO 12 sts. Join in the round, do not twist. Make sure to leave a long tail 15 cm/8. Round 1-5: k Round 6: K 4, k2tog, k2tog, k 4. (10 sts) Round 7-10: k Round 11: K 3, k2tog, k2tog, k 2. (8 sts) Round 12-15: k Round 16: K 2, k2tog, k2tog, k 2. (6 sts) Round 17-18: k Round 19: K 1, k2tog, k2tog, k 1. (4 sts) Round 20: k2tog, k2tog (2 sts) Round 21: k2tog (slide bell through as you knit the last st.) Cut yarn and pull end through last st to secure.

Assemble:
Sew on ears; then sew on face details. Sew on hat; then whip stitch around the bottom of the hat to create a brim. To make the fold use the tail from the BO end and sew the hat down. Sew closed the CO and BO ends of the head. To make the ornament hanger twist a 30cm/12 piece of white and pink together to make a cord. Attach to the top of the head.
