Mansoor Rashid: New General Manager, Qatar

Mansoor Rashid, a mechanical engineer by profession, joined Descon in 1980 and worked for 26 years on various important positions including Construction Manager, Project Manager, Manager Works, Head Manufacturing and GM ODICO. After working for about 5 years at Byco, MR is back with us as the new GM, Descon Engineering, Qatar LLC. He speaks about Descon's recent activities, company's move to infrastructure projects and challenges being faced by contractors in Qatar.

What were the key highlights for Descon in 2011?

MR 2011 was quite challenging for us, in which we secured two major projects. One of the notable achievements in 2011 was the completion of over 18 million LTI free man-hours. From a safety perspective, this was a major breakthrough. We also successfully completed the Pearl GTL Project and completed about 18.7m LTI free man-hours. This has led to the completion of 52 million LTI free man-hours spanned over the last 3 years. We were also awarded the Silver Award in Contractor's Category for HSE Performance by Qatar Petroleum.

How does Descon see its role in the project maintenance market?
MR The maintenance schedule can be unpredictable because many projects are new. Generally, mega projects only run for about a year before they need a shutdown. In the case of Pearl GTL, it would comparatively need a turnaround of longer duration. Descon plans to participate in it as we already have long term turnaround contracts with QatarGas and Dolphin Energy and have been recently awarded the QChem turnaround. We want to tap the potential available in this maintenance market and we are working on it diligently.

What major projects do you have under way in Qatar?

MR We have been mostly focusing on plant services/ maintenance and electromechanical construction. In the near future, there are not so many projects in electromechanical construction coming up. There are a few: Qatar Refineries Expansion Project and the Dolphin Project will be adding a couple of compressors. Now, we are focusing more on the infrastructure side. On the other hand, we are still focusing on the traditional plant services business. We are quite confident that in the next year, we will secure major shutdowns and get a further edge.

How is Descon reacting to the shift in the Qatari market towards infrastructure projects?
MR Clearly, investment is starting to shift in Qatar away from the oil and gas industry. This is a natural consequence of its 2030 National Vision, the FIFA 2022 World Cup and Qatar's goal of achieving a diversified and sustained economy. The country is now focussed on developing its infrastructure. As these plans unfold, Descon would like to add value to these projects and explore opportunities where we can merge our existing capabilities with an international contractor and deliver value to Qatar.

What are the key challenges the construction sector will face over the coming years?
MR For the construction companies, the major challenge is that competition is increasing and it is not very easy to cope with it. Although the global recession has reduced the cost of human resources to some extent, the increasing competition remains there with companies coming from all across the world. Also, there is a serious problem with logistics and commuting from one area to another.

How does the Qatari business market compare with other countries Descon has worked in?
MR Qatar is a very small state by size, but it is a country with regional and global aspirations. That is why it is exciting to do business here. Qatar is different because it thinks differently. For example, the emphasis on women's education is very different than the approach of its neighbours. There is a feeling of uniqueness about Qatar as it wants to look different from the other GCC countries.

DCH Expands Its Paper Chemicals Sizing Products Range

Descon Chemicals Limited introduced two new variants in its line of Fortified Rosin products. FR products are generally used as sizing agents for the wet-end process of paper manufacturing. The use of Fortified Rosin for sizing purposes is a conventional and widely utilized method for treating paper across Pakistan. De-Size 500 and De-Sol 300 are the two latest additions to Descon's Fortified Rosin product line and provide enhanced versions of the products already available in the market for the same process. De-Size 500, an Anionic Rosin is an improved form of FR, modified and sponified, which provides greater economy per unit consumption as compared to alternate brands available in the market. De-Size 500, also has the added advantage of working better on paper process machinery; reducing service costs, minimizing machine breaks and consequently leading to improved machine life. De-Size 500 serves the added advantage of being readily soluble at room temperature and therefore not requiring any pre-process heating or treatment. Currently, this product is available in conventional packaging of 100 kg drums and is recommended for sizing purposes for craft, paper and board machines.

DeSol 300 is a light viscous liquid emulsion, used as a PseudoNeutral Sizing solution for the paper and board manufacturing industry, particularly used for sizing, writing and printing paper. DeSol has a higher pH value (6.25 - 6.50), as compared to Delta Size and DeSize. An impressive factor about DeSol 300 is that, unlike other brands used for the same purpose, it can either be used as such or in diluted form with Alum (Feric/ Non-Feric/PAC) to attain the desired COBB value with back water. This characteristic provides users of DeSol the advantage of reducing their overall Alum consumption and thereby minimizing manufacturing costs. Just as Desize, DeSol is also soluble at room temperature and is machine friendly, causing least possible wear and tear. 'Your Solutions, Our Chemicals', Descon Chemical's slogan, highlights the integrated relationship between our customers and our products. This relationship is at the core of the services we offer; we at Descon Chemicals are committed to provide our customers: quality, innovation and satisfaction.

This fiscal year also saw the launch of the much anticipated DOL Brands. It was a firm belief of the Marketing team that to distinguish ourselves from other hydrogen peroxide manufacturers, we would have to market ourselves in a more unique way as opposed to marketing the generic chemical name. Hence we focused on marketing the brand; one that epitomizes quality, backed by technical and customer support excellence. Descon Oxychem is now proud to have ten different product variants, across four separate concentrations in five different grades, making us the only manufacturer of hydrogen peroxide in Pakistan to provide such an extensive line of product offerings. In the time to follow, we aim to build upon the value of creation through our branding strategy and to sustain brand equity by ensuring that the highest standards of quality are backed with superior technical support and a determination to provide the best services possible.

Information and Communication Technology

Note From CIO

It gives me great pleasure to communicate that the SAP Project Phase 2 of SAP Program went live on February 01, 2012. Like any major SAP implementation, this project posed its own unique blend of challenges and opportunities. SAP is a market leader in enterprise solutions and will enable Descon to adopt industrys best practices in all facets of organizational management tools, which include project management, financial management, human resources management, supply chain management, sales & distribution, plant maintenance and quality assurance management. A change of such magnitude might be uncomforting or unsettling at the start, however, this is typical; we believe that with honest commitment and firmness of the execution team, success is certain. No matter how deeply embedded or user-friendly the legacy systems might have been in the past, the real value of an ERP lies in its enterprise-wide integration, which helps achieve a greater focus on analytics, quick decision making, robust and accurate business information, improved financial reporting and simple easy-to-use interfaces. SAP will empower the workforce leading to eventual devolution of decision making. Real value will become visible a couple of months after
ICT

the go-live.There will be teething issues. We have to collectively facilitate, resolve and move beyond them. Finally, I am thankful to the entire project EDGE team (Descon's SAP team, SMEs and end users) for its sustained and unflinching dedication during turbulent & testing times and seeing them through successfully. Also a note of appreciation is due to the senior management of Descon who remained committed and have wholeheartedly supported us in every possible way. Wishing you a very happy startup and a smooth transition to SAP. Syed Aftab Afzal

DESCON NEWS | SUMMER 2012 39

What Happens Next

After the go-live, business users are requested to use SAP system in order to perform business functions. Our objective is to swiftly adopt new system in our business lives to avoid additional cost of legacy applications. As they will now not only become redundant, but will also require additional cost for their maintenance. Despite extensive trainings of the staff, some problems are bound to arise, as users familiarize themselves with the new system. A helpdesk has been established to assist users with such issues. All are requested to contact the Key Business Users for SAP support related issues.

Achievements
Descon's ICT has put another feather in its cap by upgrading SAP ECC 6.0 from EHP4 to EHP5. This milestone will lead to enhanced functionality within the SAP system. Successful implementation of the support desk through a solution manager as per ASAP methodology with escalation management and mobile alerts gives an edge to Descon among other SAP implemented companies in Pakistan. Another breakthrough has been the implementation of Mobile Sap Solution to facilitate the management approving SAP workflows (PR/PO) through blackberry and the web. This is an initiative to achieve ICTs vision of right information to the right person at the right time.

ICTs team at the launch of SAP Go-Live

Improvement of Networks Infrastructure

To provide secure connectivity, Virtual Private Network (VPN) has been established between main locations through Wide Area Network (WAN). The network infrastructure has also been redesigned to provide secure and reliable access to users with central management. For cost reduction, server consolidation has been conducted at DHQ data centers. The NC Section has also established facilities like audio conferencing and online monitoring through LCDs.

ICT Information Systems Improvement

The ICT Information Systems Section has managed to integrate GDMS legacy system with SAP Project System (PS). This would enable the end-users to avoid redundant efforts in managing information in multiple systems. Similarly, it would also reduce chances of data miss-match across the systems. Fingerprint reader machines (biometric) have also been integrated to provide real-time attendance data to the SAP HCM module. The Information Systems Section has played a major role in the data migration activity of SAP.
