EVALUATION ACTIVITY 1 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real

media products? (i.e of film openings) In my opinion our media product relates to many forms and conventions, our task was to create a plot into a opening two minute sequence, prepare shoot and edit the final product making it look effective and professional and being able to compare it to other films. As a group we felt we didnt want to make our film predictable by who watches our film so we felt as if we needed to challenge our genre which is horror, making it more epic and suspenseful and not predictable. To help us with our planning we looked at other horror films which could influence us, the conventions we looked at was Paranormal Activity, The Pact, Insidious, and The Exorcists. Setting/Location

By setting our location at Uzairs house enabled us to use the space well and we took advantage of the lights on the ceiling which were able to flicker at different levels whether it was constant, blinking or flickering in a slow motion. We mainly referred to the pact and paranormal activity for guidance to help us with our production as it was more or less doing the ouija board in a house, from this point the audience should be able to realise that the setting is in a home and something is going to happen as the ouija board is a game to do with spirits, the audience should also know why it is set in a house rather than a school. Title/Fonts

Our opening sequence titles are not really nothing fancy, the reason why we done it plain and simple is because we wanted our text to be read clear by our readers and did not want nothing distracting them from reading it by inserting flashing lights and moving imagery which can distract a reader . The logo which is UAH PRODUCTIONS we found was very eye catching and different however SATANIC is the actual title of our film this was done on final cut pro the beginning part to when the title appears is different to a normal title because it drops down from the top as a yellow colour and then after that the title is spelled out in a fiery colour and towards the end, a fire appears taking out the logo this is different and eye catching due to the action taking place and colour. The fire also represents fire from the candles. Costume and props

Both girls in the first scene both wore plain and casual clothing as it was set in a house so it should be casual and relaxed both girls are wearing white which symbolises innocence and purity at this point Lily and Endora dont know what they are letting themselves in for. Black can symbolise death and power however this could be used as a colour of being relaxed this convention does relate to a horror because it is a dark colour making the scene more suspenseful. The props being used are the ouigi board game, candles and a glass. The candles are to do with spirits which is why we chose to use candles. The conventions in our opening sequence do add up as a horror because dark, dull and casual clothing are used due to the lighting making the audience suspicious on what is going to occur to the setting or either the girls who are just playing the game innocently.

Our two main inspirations which The Pact and Paranormal Activity

We looked at these trailers and instantly liked the way the makeup is done on third picture this shows that the girl is not normal she is possessed because her skin colour from her face is completely different to her whole body and to another person and we know that this will make the audience question themselves thinking what is wrong with the girl however for Lily we made her look paler than darker and added a hint of red eyeliner to the bottom of your eyes. The first picture we liked was because there are two girls who are small however we choose two girls who were older but we liked the time frame being shown at the bottom which shows the date and time of what is being recorded. The use of casual clothing on the two girls helped us relate to Lily and Endora and the girls in the picture setting is also in a home which is more than a reason of them being in casual wear.

Story and how the opening sets it up Our opening starts off with both protagonists at the scene and Lily turning on the camcorder at this point the audience are not really thinking about what is going to happen just yet as nothing has been said or heard by two the protagonists, while the camera is on speech is being made by both of the girls the audience should have realised that by now one of the protagonists which is Endora is afraid of this as it is to do with spirits on the other hand Lily wants to keep trying and she is confused as to why Endora has gone out of the room. Endora doesnt come back so Lily has decided to continue the game leaving the audience suspicious as to where Endora has gone. Lily carries on and once she is finished she blows out the candles because her attempts have failed at this point the audience should be thinking as the ouija board isnt working something may occur. As she blows out the second candle the lights in the house begin to flicker and then carries on as the other candles are being blown out this should make the audience think is there a spirit present in the house hold or now has the ouiga board working. The last candle is blown and the setting turns pitch black leaving the audience confused as to if the opening sequence is to carry on and what has happened to Lily. The scene is carried on into Lily ending up in a field which is allowed the audience to think that she was taken away by some sort of spirit by her ending up in an open field with no one around her all there is, is a surrounded of grass and weed this leaves our main character confused because she has ended up in a whole new setting. Lily gets up looking all around

her, looking for a exit so she can get away from the open field, Lily knows that something isnt right because you can tell from her facial expression. Lily starts running this may question the audience as to why is she running, who is she running away from and most importantly who is chasing her, from her running you can see that she is scared, terrified and the music builds up making it more suspenseful building up tension in the audiences mind. Towards the end Lily trips up and falls, we decided to end this as a cliff-hanger giving the audience something to think and talk about what has happened to Lily, where has she gone and why has it ended. By having a cliff-hanger towards the end will enable us to make a sequel.

Camerawork and editing

For our camera work we used a variety of angles such as POV, close up, extreme close up, mid shot and long shots. The close up of our protagonist is showing her facial expression to when she is pressing play on a camcorder.

This is a close up of the two protagonists playing upon the ouigi board. It is shown to be set up as a homemade document to film sprits and demons; this is a horror convention as most paranormal films consist of this.

This is a mid shot showing the two girls attempting the oujia game, we can tell that a question has been answered because the hand movements are towards Endoras side of the board.

This is a POV of Lily looking at Endoras facial expression. Endoras facial eXpression is showing that she doesnt want to continue playing on and is

scared to carry on. This is a convention because Endoras expression is showing that she is afraid which will allow the audience to think is she going to carry on ..

How are the characters introduced The first protaginist is Lily. Lily is she introduced by turning on the camera getting ready to document herself and Endora playing it. Lilys facial expression is a hard one to say because she isnt showing that she is scared or frustarted just yet. However our second protagonist Endoras is introduced as a person who looks more scared , uncomfortable and terrified rather than Lily. Endoras leaves half way through the seance for the ouija board while Lily is carrying on playing.

Special effects We didnt really use any special effects for our scenes. Only at one point did we use it which was when doing the title SATANIC with fire. To do special effects a software called motion 5 had to be used making it more professional and effective. It took quite a few days to get used to the buttons and software but we eventually got their in the end. Changing the colour making it fade away by the fire added as a special effect. This convention we thought was well linked because SATANIC means horror in latin and it is a different name and the fire makes it look more suspensful.
