Define : Relative Pronoun : The pronoun used to join two sentences is known as relative
pronoun. It also refes back to the noun used before it. The noun before it is known as
antecedent. Eg: This is the boy. He won the prize. This is the boy who won the prize.
( who relative pronoun )
Exercise: Join the sentences using Relative pronoun.
1) Your daughter was very unhappy. She had lost her diamond ring.

LESSON- 17 The Infinitives
Define : Infinitives
When a verb merely suggests an action and is not limited by number and person, it is
called as Infinitives.
The infinitives are sometimes used as a subject or an object of a finite verb.
They are used both with and without to
Eg: 1) They wish to succeed in business (with to)
2) I bid her do this (without to)
The infinitives is used like a noun. It can be the subject or the object of a verb.
Eg: 1) To err is human, to forgive divine. (To err - Subject)

2) Children love to go out.


(to go Object)
It can also be used as the object of a preposition.
Eg: I was about to leave. (to leave object of preposition)
To To of the infinitive is omitted after can, may, shall, must.
Eg: We can do the work easily.
Exercise: Join the following pairs of sentences using Infinitives:
1) She visits the poor. She wants to relieve their sufferings.

LESSON- 18 The Participles
Define : Participle : A participle is so called because it is partly a verb and partly an
adjective. Eg: 1) I saw a boy running.
2) I found Tina waiting for a bus.
The participle that shows the action in going on or is in complete or unfinished. Such a
participle is called Present Participle. The Present Participle always ends in ing.
Eg: 1) Hearing the noise, I woke up. (Hearing pre-participle)
The participle ends in ed , d- en- n and t shows that the action is finished.
Such participles are called Past Participles. Eg: Sita is a girl loved by all.
(loved past-participle)
Participles that represents an action as completed at sometime in the past such a
participle is called a Perfect Participle. Eg: Having lost our way, we sat down to rest.
Participles can be used to join pairs of sentences together.
Eg: We saw some children. They were playing with fire works.
We saw some children playing with fire works.
Exercise: Join the sentences using Participles:
1) We turned left. We reached the station.

LESSON- 19 The Gerund
Define : Gerund : A gerund is a word that is partly noun and partly a verb.
Eg: 1) Swimming is a good exercise. (Subject) (Swimming gerund)
2) Teach me swimming. (object) ( Swimming object)
3) Seeing is believing. (Complement of a verb) (Seeing gerund ) (believing gerund)
4) He is fond of swimming. ( Object of a preposition) ( Swimming gerund)
Gerund is a kind of a verb which has a verbal function as well as noun function.
Therefore it is a verb- noun.
Eg: 1) Swimming is a good exercise. ( Subject Gerund)
Here the ward Swimming is formed from the verb to swim by adding ing hence it is
like a verb.
The word swimming is the name of an action and also the subject of a sentence. Hence
it does the work of a noun.
Therefore, Swimming is a gerund Verb noun ( verbal noun)
Exercise: Replace the Infinitives with Gerund.
1) To drive a car requires skill.
