REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY
11TH NOVEMBER 2012

SERVICE OF CHORAL EVENSONG AND ACT OF REMEMBRANCE

WELCOME TO THE ROBIN CHAPEL. This chapel is a memorial of a beloved son, erected by his sorrowing parents; it embodies and symbolises the wider spirit of Christian charity and unity. It witnesses to the common heritage, the family of all humankind, in a celebration of life in all its fullness here in this unique chapel where the love of God dwells and all are welcome. The Chapel stands as a witness to the lives of all those who have given, and still give, their lives in the cause of others and, as a house of prayer, continues to pray for peace in the world. Today in this act of remembrance, we remember them. Chaplain The Reverend Thomas Coupar

Please stand as the Choir and Clergy enter. WELCOME HYMN Lead, kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom, Lead thou me on ; The night is dark, and I am far from home ; Lead thou me on. Keep thou my feet; I do not ask to see The distant scene, one step enough for me. I was not ever thus, nor prayed that thou Shouldst lead me on; I loved to choose and see my path; but now Lead thou me on. I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears, Pride ruled my will: remember not past years. So long thy power hath blessed me, sure it still Will lead me on, Oer moor and fen, oer crag and torrent, till The night is gone, And with the morn those angel faces smile, Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile.
Words: Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman Tune: Lux Benigna (John Bachus Dykes)

The Lord be with you. And with thy Spirit. Let us confess to God the sins and shortcomings of the world; its pride, its selfishness, its greed; its evil divisions and hatreds. Let us confess our share in what is wrong, and our failure to seek and establish that peace which God wills for his children. Please sit or kneel Almighty and most merciful Father; We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done ; And there is no health in

us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults. Restore thou them that are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father; for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life; To the glory of thy holy name. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon us, pardon and deliver us from all our sins, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and keep us in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ACT OF REMEMBRANCE We are met this day to glorify God whose power sustains the world; to remember with thanksgiving those who lived and died in the service of our country; and to ask for Gods help and blessing, that we may be worthy of their sacrifice each day of our life. Let us pray. Most gracious God, Father of all mercies, we offer our thanks for the bounty of your providence and for the renewing liberty of your grace. We rejoice in our inheritance in holy things, and in the freedom and peace in which we live. Especially on this day we give thanks for the remembrance we are privileged to make of those companions of our way whose lives were given in time of war and whose names are forever remembered here in this Chapel. Amen. Please stand Let us remember the kindness of God, and his favour to us in our time of need. Let us remember those who were wounded in the fight; those who perished in air raids at home; those who fell in battle, and are buried at sea, or in some corner of a foreign field; and especially those whom we have known and loved, whose place is forever in our hearts. We remember Robin Tudsbery, who like so many; showed courage, devotion to duty, and selfsacrifice in the cause of others. Let us remember our enemies, whose homes and hearts are bereft as ours, whose dead lie also in a living tomb of everlasting remembrance. Let us remember those who came back; those whose lives still bear the scars of war; those who lost sight or limbs or reason; those who lost faith in God and hope for humanity. We remember those who came back to live here in the Thistle Foundation. Let us remember

the continuing grace of God, whose love holds all souls in life, and to whom none is dead but all are alive for ever. LAST POST CHOIR They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning: We will remember them.
Words: Laurence Binyon Music: Douglas Guest

THE LAMENT LAYING OF WREATHS Mr Julian Tudsbery Major Graeme Hutchison (Blues and Royals) Major Peter Eydes (KOSB) Thistle Foundation Veterans SILENCE REVEILLE KOHIMA EPITAPH When you go home tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow we gave our today. Let us pray. Please sit or kneel Ever living God we remember those whom you have gathered from the storm of war into the peace of your presence; may that same peace calm our fears, bring justice to all peoples and establish harmony among the nations. May the example of their devotion inspire us, that we may be taught to live by those who learned to die. And at the last, grant that we, being faithful till death, may receive with them the crown of life that never fades; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PSALM 46 (please remain seated) God is our hope and strength: a very present help in trouble.
Therefore will we not fear, though the earth be moved: and though the hills be carried into the midst of the sea. Though the waters thereof rage and swell: and though the mountains shake at the tempest of the same. The rivers of the flood thereof shall make glad the city of God: the holy place of the tabernacle of the most Highest. God is in the midst of her, therefore shall she not be removed: God shall help her, and that right early. The heathen make much ado, and the kingdoms are moved: but God hath shewed his voice, and the earth shall melt away. The Lord of hosts is with us: the God of Jacob is our refuge. O come hither, and behold the works of the Lord: what destruction he hath brought upon the earth. He maketh wars to cease in all the world: he breaketh the bow, and knappeth the spear in sunder, and burneth the chariots in the fire. Be still then, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, and I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us: the God of Jacob is our refuge.
Chant by T.T. Noble

1st LESSON Psalm 23 read by Liam J Fraser, Verger ANTHEM Faire is the heaven, where happy soules have place In full enjoyment of felicitie, Whence they doe still behold the glorious face Of the Divine Eternall Majestie; Yet farre more faire be those bright Cherubins, Which all with golden wings are overdight, And those eternall burning Seraphins, Which from their faces dart out fiery light; Yet fairer than they both, and much more bright, Be th' Angels and Archangels, which attend On God's owne Person, without rest or end. These then in faire each other farre excelling, As to the Highest they approach more neare, Yet is the Highest farre beyond all telling, Fairer than all the rest which there appear, Though all their beauties joynd

together were; How then can mortall tongue hope to expresse The image of such endlesse perfectnesse?
Words: Edmund Spenser Music: Sir William Harris

2nd LESSON Matthew 5: 1-12 read by Lieutenant Colonel Neil Morrison OBE, Trustee CREED We believe that God is Spirit, And they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth. We believe that God is Light, And if we walk in the Light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with an other. We believe that God is Love, And everyone that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. We believe that Jesus is the Son of God, And that God hath given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. We believe that we are children of God, And that He hath given us of His Spirit. We believe that, if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins. We believe that the world passeth away, and the lust thereof, But he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever LORD'S PRAYER setting by Richard Langdon 1st COLLECT for the Armed Forces Almighty God, stretch forth thy mighty arm to strengthen and protect the armed forces: grant that meeting danger with courage and all occasions with discipline and loyalty, they may truly serve the cause of justice and peace to the honour of thy holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 2nd COLLECT for Peace O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give;that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

3rd COLLECT for Aid against all Perils Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. PRAYER OF KING HENRY VI O Lord Jesus Christ, who hast created and redeemed me, and hast brought me hither where I am: Thou knowest what Thou wouldst do with me. Do with me according to Thy will, with mercy. Amen. HYMN In our day of thanksgiving one psalm let us offer For the saints who before us have found their reward; When the shadow of death fell upon them, we sorrowed, But now we rejoice that they rest in the Lord. In the morning of life, and at noon, and at even, He called them away from our worship below; But not till his love, at the font and the altar, Had girt them with grace for the way they should go. These stones that have echoed their praises are holy, And dear is the ground where their feet have once trod; Yet here they confessed they were strangers and pilgrims, And still they were seeking the city of God. Sing praise, then, for all who here sought and here found him, Whose journey is ended, whose perils are past: They believed in the Light; and its glory is round them, Where the clouds of earth's sorrow are lifted at last.
Words: W.H. Draper Tune: St Catherines Court (Richard Strutt)

ADDRESS

Revd Benjamin Abelado, Chaplain to the Forces

DOXOLOGY Now to Him who loved us, gave us Every pledge that love could give, Freely shed His blood to save us, Gave His life that we may live, Be the kingdom and dominion And the glory evermore.
Words: Samuel Miller Waring Tune: Robin Chapel Melody (Sir Francis Tudsbery, 1954)

PRAYERS O Lord, our Heavenly Father, high and mighty, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, the only Ruler of princes, who dost from thy throne behold all dwellers upon earth; most heartily we beseech thee with thy favour to behold our most gracious Sovereign Lady, Queen Elizabeth; and so replenish her with the grace of thy Holy Spirit, that she may always incline to thy will, and walk in thy way; endue her plenteously with heavenly gifts; grant that she may vanquish all her enemies; and finally, after this life, she may attain everlasting joy and felicity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O God, the creator and Preserver of all mankind, we commend to thy fatherly goodness all those, who are in any ways afflicted, or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; that it may please thee to comfort and relieve them according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ, his sake. Amen. Lord, we beseech thee to keep thy household of The Thistle Foundation, and all who worship within the Robin Chapel, in continual godliness; that through thy protection they may be free from all adversities, and devoutly given to serve thee in good works, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O Lord Jesus Christ, who by thy Holy Apostle hast called us to put on the armour of God and to take the sword of the Spirit, give thy grace, we pray thee, to the Blues and Royals that they may fight manfully under thy banner against all evil, and waiting on thee to renew their strength, may mount up with wings as eagles, in thy name, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Remember, O Lord, all those who have died the death of honour and are departed in the hope of resurrection to Eternal Life, especially the Officers, Men and Women of our Sea, Land, and Air Forces, to whom it was given to lay down their lives for the cause of Freedom and Justice. In that place of light, whence sorrow and mourning are far vanished, give them rest, O Lord, the Lover of Men. Grant this for thine only Son, Jesus Christs sake. Amen. Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and lovingkindness to us, and to all people; We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all, for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we shew forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives; by giving up ourselves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen. HYMN O valiant hearts who to your glory came Through dust of conflict and through battle flame; Tranquil you lie, your knightly virtue proved, Your memory hallowed in the land you loved. Proudly you gathered, rank on rank, to war As who had heard Gods message from afar; All you had hoped for, all you had, you gave, To save mankind yourselves you scorned to save. Still stands his Cross from that dread hour to this, Like some bright star above the dark abyss; Still, through the veil, the Victors pitying eyes Look down to bless our lesser Calvaries. These were his servants, in his steps they trod, Following through death the martyred Son of God: Victor, he rose; victorious too shall rise They who have drunk his cup of sacrifice.

O risen Lord, O Shepherd of our dead, Whose cross has bought them and whose staff has led, In glorious hope their proud and sorrowing land Commits her children to thy gracious hand.
Words: Sir John S. Arkwright Tune: Supreme Sacrifice (Revd Charles Harris)

BLESSING God grant to the living, grace; to the departed, rest; to the Church, the Queen, the Commonwealth, and all people, peace and concord; and to us and all his servants life everlasting. And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be with you, and all those whom you love, this night and always. CHORAL AMEN setting by T.T. Noble NATIONAL ANTHEM arr.
